As a writer, a possibility I would entertain in telling what was going on with Sophia while she was missing would be done inside Carol's mind. That could be used to get into Carol's psyche and bring more out on the character. No matter what else happens to Carol, losing Sophia will be THE defining moment of her life from then on. I think brief flashes of thought would be better than any extended flashbacks, though. No matter how extreme the vision in her head might be, it should be cast against the mundane chores of daily life, because that is when the thoughts would come the strongest.
It would also serve to "humanize" Carol more in the minds of the audience. I hesitate to use the word humanize because it seems that what the Carol haters don't like about her is that she is a realistic human. Not everyone is a zombie killing machine.

I love that idea. Whenever I thought about this Sophia flashback subject I always just assumed it would be a tell the whole story in one go at the start of an episode kind of thing.
I am fully expecting Carol's mind to start slipping in season 3 because of the extremely painful loss of Sophia. To see little flashbacks of Sophia while this is happening, spread out through a number of episodes, perhaps to remind us of why this is happening to Carol, would be great I think. If it doesn't happen like that and Carol gets stonger(although I personally think the other way is alot more realistic)and we see the flashes while she does chores and thinks about what happened, as you said, I would enjoy that too. It is highly probable that we never get any of these flashbacks, which I think would be a shame but I will still love this show either way.
