I thought the movie was pretty good. The books were ok as well. The plot was not terribly complex, but it was presented well in the books. For me I think the second and third books are not as good as the first one, which had a lot to do with Katniss herself. In the second and third books she appears exceptionally flat and emotionless to me. I can't say if this was intentionally done by the author or is just a nature of how she writes. It seemed she did a good job of detailing the plot and action of the books, but glossed over the emotions that Katniss was feeling, to the point where it appeared she hardly displayed any emotion at all. Which is a difficult thing to relate to considering the entire series was from her point of view. This became most apparent in the third book where her lack of conviction to her own cause did not really endear her as a protagonist for me. I found it more difficult to emphasize with her in the third book.
I remember my wife teasing me while reading the third book saying "Do you want to know who she ends up with?" and the only thing I could say is if that was what your main concern and what the story is about, then it is completely lost on me. I was under the impression I was reading a story about the nature of human oppression and rebellion, not the confused love triangle of a teenage girl.
I will say that the books did provide a better context for the story than the movies as is usually normal since you can't really fit the entire story into a 2 hour film. But I felt that the actress in the movies did display Katniss emotional state better than what was described in the books. It remains to be seen if this would be carried over in the future movies.

I actually found that she was full of emotion - just no more love in the second and third books. Like she loved so much in the first that anger and hatred is her defence mechanism that brings her through the second and third books. Oddly enough, I feel I quite related to her... Though I'm not sure what that says about me!
I'm about a quarter of the way through Mockingjay now and I'm actually finding I enjoy it more than Catching Fire. So far, anyway. Funny enough, the "who will she end up with" bit of the storyline hadn't actually crossed my mind until you said it. I've been so focussed on who's going to win and at what cost. I'm so excited to reach the end!!!
