I wouldn't make that door "unscrewable" I mean geez how you gonna scavenge for food?
On the bright side, it'd be fun to have one of those and go rolling around that MEGA horde in the episode where Daryl, Tyreese, Michonne and Bob were trapped in. heh

^^^ There are 2 huge issues with the ball.

Hills, gravity and gulleys/ravines..

Plexiglass will scratch and pit. Two or three miles on pavement and you would not be able to see anything through the ball. It will just be white haze.

True that, call it camouflage ... especially if you're wearing white :D Rolling down hill definitely would suck, but would you get points (pins) if you go down through the middle of a herd and count the ones you knocked down, flattened?
Of course, getting stuck in a ditch afterwards would be bad. Make sure you got enough food to last a while.

If the Philippines Islands people get caught in the plague, I don't think they'll have much trouble dispatching zombies.

The NG and military armories are full of  223/5.56x45mmm ammo (many millions of rds at each one. With nobody around to stop you, a cutting torch or bulldozer/tank gets you entrance to that ammo. With a good silencer on your AR15, you'll be fine, if you know to anchor your boat well offshore. the walkers will soon all rot away.

Considering there aren't any guns in the South of England I doubt I'll be able to find any. We dont have any sort of special armed riot police here other (this isn't A big city) so even trying to find one on the body of one of them would be hard. So for me I'll have to settle for the use of melee weapons.

So a hatchet or a machete will have to be my go to. We have both of those in the garage. I'd love to find a bow as there are some archery clubs in the local area, but if thats no luck perhaps I can make one.

My daughter and I went to buy her some shoes yesterday, and walking through one of those big sporting goods stores that has everything, I got all jazzed when we passed the camping supplies. The machete caught my eye first, and then it drifted over to the camp axes, and finally settled on the tomahawks (hm, no good link for what they had there). I think I embarrassed my daughter, but I know where I'm headed when the shit goes down (and everyone else, too, of course).

crowbar. Sharp edges need maintenance. Swords actually require allot more care than you would think. A nice solid slab of metal like a crowbar with maybe a lightly pointed end would work wonders for the ZA. LOL!

I have a wrecking bar hanging in my basement. It's a great tool, and I've always thought it would be a good implement in the ZA.

I would use a combination of both.

First off, as far as ammo consumption is concerned....M4s (M16s, and M249B too), use a 5.56mm round and is the go-to personal weapon for the military. It's light weight, easy to tear apart and clean, very accurate, and compact enough to use in tight areas....the military also has MILLIONS of them, and even more if you count the civilian AR-15 and BILLIONS upon BILLIONS of rounds....and in a ZA I am sure there would be plenty of it around from the dead soldiers or abandoned military bases.

Melee weapons are great too, but like mentioned before, require close quarters and skill, not to mention stamina and the nerve to use them. \

One more caveat....silencers...no such thing....they are called suppressors, they are designed to cut down on muzzle flash, and they only cut the sound slightly,  and certainly not enough to make a difference to anything in the immediate area... it will still be loud...just not AS loud. (most of the sound of the weapon is NOT from the bullet leaving the barrel, but from the sound of the explosion that accelerates it out of the chamber, and from the action of the bolt slamming back from said explosion)

OK, now that that is out of the way....here goes..

I would first off not use armor or riot gear....its heavy, hot, cumbersome, and it slows you down a LOT...it's designed to deflect knives and small arms fire...and since zombies only use teeth it seems like a little over-kill to me....all things equal I would much rather use thick leather gloves and basically motorcycle leathers (chaps, jacket, etc) with holes in it for ventilation....remember what you are fighting....they can't bite through leather and they aren't coming at you with knives or guns, so all good. Goggles and a mask would be on my list as well as some jungle combat boots.

That's my armor.

My Melee weapons...a M16 bayonet...it can be used as a standalone knife, or can be mounted on the barrel of an M4/M16 for extra reach and leverage. I would also have a Gerber multi-tool (with pliers) because of its versatility in a survival situation. The bayonet would provide me with slicing and stabbing...for chopping, hacking, and mauling, a hammer-backed all-steel hatchet would be perfect. A machete for longer-range slicing and hacking would complete that ensemble. I would also have a ranger braid...(50' of 550 para-cord braided into a 12" rope, easy to carry and lots of it if needed, and its tough stuff) as well as an assortment of other things like matches, needle and thread, compass, etc. The small gear I would hook to my jacket using a Molly system for easy access. Survival gear in the back, combat gear in the front.

For my firearm selection...an M4 carbine with handle and M203 grenade launcher...quick, easy, accurate, lightweight, and highly mobile, and lots of ammo available. The typically combat load of an infantry soldier is 210 rounds, and 12 40 mm grenades and that's what I would carry since the molly system is designed for that (6 30 round mags on person, 1 in weapon) That would be attached to my body using a fast-sling, so that even if my hand weren't on it, it would stay on me, up high on my chest so I could easily and quickly use it. In addition I would have 2 glock 9-mils, which are reliable, durable, and have ammo that is easy to come by, they aren't the most powerful, but you don't need much for a head shot and I would gladly trade power and kick-back for accuracy and ease of use in this situation. half a dozen extra clips for the handguns and my arsenal would be complete. I would have lots of ammo, weapons, and survival gear, and would be light-weight and not overly bogged down by armor and I could move faster and more quietly.

For 1-5 zeds at close range the knife and hatchet would work great...if it got too intense, switch to the handguns, and then maybe even the M4...all else fails get to high ground a lob a 40mm frag into the horde....or use it (It can launch grenades in excess of 300 yards) as a decoy (launch a grenade way off and all the zombies will hear it and go THERE, allowing you to silently move to your new position undetected)

My experience with this: 12 years in the 101st, 2 tours in Iraq.

I'll put it simple. Both. You can't choose one or the other. You'll just need both.

Mostly guns for people....swords, axes, long knives, etc etc for the dead.

Ammo won't last forever and unless you happen to live near a place that has all the supplies you need to make it then your screwed.

I always thought it rather unrealistic the way the series, zombie movies, and zombie books shrug off the sheer meat grinder effect HMGs, 25mm chain guns, 40mm belt fed grenade launchers, and such would have on human bodies. That's not even counting air burst artillery and aircraft launched munitions.

They would definitely have the meat grinder effect. However, WWZ talks about the "Resource to Kill Ratio" (RKR). A 40mm grenade would use up resources to manufacture and transport equal to, say, 50 rifle rounds. It would actually bring down, say, 5 zombies. Whereas 50 well-aimed rifle bullets might bring down 25 zombies. So a bullet gives 5 times more return on investment.

If you're trying to crush an isolated outbreak, and the rest of civilization is still intact, then the heavy weapons are the safest way to go...maybe use napalm and artillery even. If civilization has already fallen, then resources are pitifully thin, and anything complex just isn't doable or will take too much effort.

A good gunsmith can turn out rifle bullets from raw lead, brass scraps and a few simple chemicals to make gunpowder...hundreds of bullets per week even with simple bench tools. But making a 25mm chain gun round is a whole different ballgame - you have to mold and machine the shell and fill it with high-explosive filling (which is a lot more complicated than making basic gun powder), and then craft a fuze for the shell with complex mechanical watch-type miniature components. It can be done, but it would be slow going.

Yep casting is easy. But this depends on what type of round for a particular casing.

brass scraps

I hope you are referring to reloading empty shell casings. I have never known any gunsmith who fabricates their own casings.

few simple chemicals to make gunpowder.

Gunpowder: Sulfur, Charcol, and Potassium Nitrate. Is much. much harder to make from scartch than one would think.

There are several dozen types used for reloading.

Another essential compoenent for each round is a primer. I have never heard of anyone who makes their own.

hundreds of bullets per week even with simple bench tools.

My personal favorite reloader is the Dillon xl650. Cleaning and examining the empty shell casings is a long process.

With a progressive reloader you can crank out a 1,000 rounds a day.
