Now I lay me down to sleep, I pray thee Lord these bites aren't deep.
Should I die before I wake, I pray thee Lord, my skull they break.

Old British SLR with a bayonet would be perfect but given the chances of getting hold of one are very slim in the UK so I will make do with a 12 gauge and carving knife.
Yup, any long gun with a bayonet ends the "firearms or melee" discussion. But why stop there? Here's a few good ones on the Interwebs:

Interesting...
I have a British Mk5 Jungle Carbine, but no bayonet.
Seen the repros online for under $80. Real Jungle carbine bayonet I saw at the West Springfield gun show price was $355
Funny you said a shotgun and a kitchen knife....
Nobody makes a bayonet mount for a Mossberg 500 shotgun, so I made one a few years ago.
Made it from a 5/8ths socket, washer, electrical conduit and a piece of tooling steel. Hot blued blued it along with the screws.
Stoner bayonet:
Always wanted to make another mount for it so I can put one of my Garand bayonets on it.

That's cool! Wonder if you could do that with an o/u?
The old carbines were never much of a bayonet gun when you compare them to an SMLE or a mark 4 but it would do. How hard is it to get hold of 303 ammo in the states?

Sorry for the delayed post, summertime stuff, and my daughter was born on June 9th.

Not very. Bigger box stores will get them in quarterly in limited supply like 6-10 20rd boxes.
Local gun shops will always carry it. It is not cheap, $15 to $20 for 20 rounds.
I do have a WW2 .303 ammo can with ammo in stripper clips I picked up for $80 back in the 90's.
I only shoot my mk5 once a year. I have to admit, my shoulder hurts after shooting a 10rd mag.
Happy 4th!!!

With .303 or .308. it will cost you. .223 not so much, which can be bought in bulk for around .15 to .30 cents a round.
.22LR is a great practice round, and in general is fun to shoot. $25 for brick of 500. Have seen 5,000 round lots for $65 back in the day.
Ruger 10/22 + 25rd or 30rd mags = Fun to Shoot.
My state, Massachusetts, is ban state, so we can only have the old 30 round mags produced before 1994. The ban expired in the US in 2004, however Mass kept the ban along with 7 other states. The other 42 states in the US can have new 30 round mags, we are stuck with the old ones for now.
My wife was born on the 4th of July!

I have 2 12 gauge shotguns and had to go though hell and high water to get a license for them. The UK is a ban country!

Well my comment was intended as a courteous,
slightly tongue in cheek nod to American History.
And let's not forget BigEd is in Massachusetts....
thats where it all started!:-@
September 1, 1774 - British General Gage seizes Massachusetts Colony's arsenal at Charlestown
December 14, 1774 - Massachusetts Militia attack British arsenal in Portsmouth
February 9, 1775 - Massachusetts is declared to be in a state of rebellion
April 14, 1775 - British General Gage, now Governor of Massachusetts, is ordered to use any force necessary to uphold all British acts and to stop the buildup of Colonial Militia
April 18, 1775 - Battle of Lexington and Concord. The official start of the Revolutionary war begins with the British moving to destroy a Colonial arms cache in Concord
Looks like it is starting again:
Healey for Harbor!
Not sure if it has made national coverage.
But on July 20th, 2016. Massachusetts state attorney general Maura Healey "Declared" any and all transferred "Copycat" or "Compatible" semi auto firearms under the 1994 awb illegal. Notices were sent to the gun shops, and they pulled millions of dollars of inventory. They can only transfer those out of state.
Basically I became a felon on 7/21/16 along with thousands other residents of Massachusetts. Can't bring them to a range, can't legally transfer through FFL.
If you are caught in possession with a "Copycat" or "Compatible" weapon by police, they can arrest you (spoke to my local PD and they will not). They are waiting on more info, because by the letter of the law, these firearms are still legal. The AG simply changed the law herself, by declaration.
Backlash is brewing. State representatives have already written to the AG and expressed their discontent. Here's why: "Copycat" or "Compatible" includes pre ban 1994 guns. Even simple Ruger 10/22, M1 Garands, Mini 14's, AR 80% lowers are all illegal.
Moderators... My apologies if I am too political. But it sucks waking up a felon.
