How The Walking Dead's Norman Reedus Got an Angry, Hissing Alley Cat to Love Him

Here’s further proof that real men do love cats.

Norman Reedus plays a fan favorite character on The Walking Dead— the badass Daryl Dixon, who can fight dirty but still snuggle a baby and save a lady from certain peril. (Yes, it tends to be you, Carol.)

Norman talked to GQ about how he's like Daryl, and how they are different. On the differences side, he noted, "I'm driving back to Manhattan with a cat in my lap right now."

What kind of cat? "It's just this fat, black alley cat," Norman said. "My son wanted a black kitten when he was a kid, and I found it in the East Village in some rescue shelter, but it was born in a box and the guy that was getting rid of it was like, 'You don't want this cat. This cat's never gonna love anyone.' And the first time I saw it, it was like just hissing and scratching everything it saw and now it's like this big, fat, chill cat."

Norman Reedus tweeted this photo of his black cat on December 4.
Norman can get anyone to love him. Fans certainly love him — and they've promised to riot if Daryl is killed on The Walking Dead.
On that note, TWD executive producer and comic book writer Robert Kirkman told TV Guide, "Norman is so popular he makes me jealous. It's bonkers how much fan mail that guy gets! His character is not in the comic books, so it's not like his fate was sealed there. It's quite possible the fan reaction will guide what we do with Daryl."
If that's the case, he may just live forever!

So the "no one is safe" is just an empty threat then. Well, "no one is safe except Daryl."

I wanted to know how he actually got the cat to love him.

Did he feed him nothing but caviar? Did he let the cat scratch him until he (the cat) got it out of his system? Did he go to ehow.com and follow this advice?

i have 2 black cats. one i got from a shelter and the other from London about 10 years ago. flew him over, he's awesome, tough as nails, goes out everyday and home every night. he used to run around central London at nights, now he's in Georgia, hunting small game. The stories he must have would make 10 blockbuster films. My son loves him.

This is Daryl freakin' Dixon we're talking about here. The cat was afraid of getting scratched by Daryl and getting 'Daryl Scratch Fever'.

Wow, flew him in from London? Don't you have to quarantine cats (and dogs) for six months when they're from overseas?

My black cat was a stray, he was awesome and I've always missed him. Now I have a Siamese, and last fall we adopted a black and white tuxedo cat from the shelter. Both are great cats, love my boys. Gambit, the black and white one, is so good with my toddler, they're great friends.

Yes, and yes he's named after THAT Gambit. I am a huuuuuuuge X-Men fan, and not just the movies. I have the old school cartoons on DVDs, used to read the comics, etc. :D Love me some Gambit, he's one of my faves.

I looked into moving to the UK a long time ago, and back then there was a six month quarantine on cats and dogs. As I was only thinking of going over for a year or so, it didn't seem worth it to be without my kitties for half a year. Things may have changed since then, this was a long time ago now.

I think the US doesn't have a long quarantine on animals. Now UK does have a 6 month one because of mad cow disease. The restrictions have lifted a bit it you are moving from France to the UK and can prove that your pet was chipped or something. But yes, it was and still is for many countries, a 6 month quarantine if you move to the UK.

And you just made me realize what an idiot I was being earlier in the thread LOL. He was talking about bringing a cat from the UK to the US, not the other way around like I was. Duuuurrrrrrrr....

I've been terribly sick all week/weekend and on a lot of cold meds. I can only blame that.

I commend you for adopting from a pet shelter. There are so many great animals available for at most the cost of a spay/neuter. Those poor animals are there by no fault of their own and they have been abandoned by those who should have cared for and loved them. It's heartbreaking, and why we were up to 13 cats when my wife was working at the Humane Society.

Trust me, I'd have more cats if my husband would let me. There are so many out there that need homes.

We used to rescue rabbits, which is another animal that almost always ends up in a shelter. So many parents get them for their kids, thinking they're like hamsters or gerbils, when rabbits are a lot more work, plus live longer. It gets really bad around Easter, some stores around here won't even carry bunnies that time of year. We have two small children so don't do it anymore, but I can fully see us rescuing again in the future. Rabbits are a lot like cats, you can box train them and they like to be pet and around the family. We miss ours, the last one we had died of old age a couple of years ago.
