The honorable thing would be a genuine footrace......whoever makes it, makes it.......overweight EMT farmhand vs. injured hothead cop......well duh, injured hothead cop will shoot the farmhand, and......I don't know what my point was anymore.....

I'd still rather have Otis, the EMT, hunter, and musician around than Shane, who's basically Rick with reduced people skills and no patience.

But the original question wasn't who would you rather have. It was would you shoot Otis which would mean you're in Shane's place. I'm just staying i'd shoot him and i'd use the fact that if he hadn't shot Carl we wouldn't have even been there to make me feel better.

I don't think I could have especially after he came back to get me. You couldn' survive the ZA without others. The group is weaker when one dies and Otis proved to be useful. Who would want to be in a group of survivors where anyone can die if they are deemed useless?

So, I bring this question up a lot because I thought it was the most thought provoking question in S2 of Walking Dead. Would you kill Otis in the situation Shane was in? I would. Simply because, I could either die with Otis and subsequently kill Carl OR I can kill Otis, survive and save Carl. No offense to Otis, but he wasn't the most useful person to have around. I think if I was in that situation and it was killed or be killed. I would kill.

How about everybody else?

I think i would've done the same outta fear tbh. Otis was useful though cause he was a paramedic so he had medical training but if it was me or him id defo have shot him as well but at least i wouldve shot him in the head - a clean kill. i wouldnt wanna be torn apart so i wouldnt leave any1 else in that situation unless i had no choice.

I never understood why he shot Otis in the leg to let him be eaten alive. I guess to make it more dramatic... and to make people dislike Shane and push him towards being an antagonist.

i think its cause Otis was creaming in agony & moving around so he would attract more attention, plus the smell of fresh blood would've made the walkers forget about Shane

No, I wouldn't have. I think they both could have made it. After Shane shot Otis, they struggled for at least a good 20 seconds

If it was truly him or the both of us (which to me seemed like what happened) I totally would have shot him... especially if lives were dependent on me getting out of there safely.  After all, it was Otis's fault we had to be in that mess in the first place.

I feel like resurrecting old threads... :P
Plus this ones pretty interesting. If it came down to it I would do it, I think. However, I don't think I'd be able to deal with leaving him there - still alive - to die. I understand that it would of distracted them for longer but jeeze if I was in Otis' position I would want someone to put me down.
Morbid but true.

Otis was useful, he used to corral the walkers and hunt.  He seemed like a decent hardworking dude.

I just watched this episode again, and I think they both could have made it.

They should have stopped wasting time turning back to shoot walkers.  Neither of them had enough ammunition left to put down enough zombies to make any difference.  They needed to stop turning around and continue forward as fast as they could.  I know Shane was injured and Otis was tired, but they were keeping distance between themselves and the walkers.

Looks like Otis put on a little more weight after shooting Carl.

I wouldn't have shot Otis. I also wouldn't have swung the door wide on the trailer we had just slipped into unobserved and acted surprised when the zombies were out there. It seemed like they were intentionally attracting attention when they did that.

If I was Shane my plan would have been to have Otis waiting in the truck while I got in and got what we needed. Then when the escape was needed Otis could drive down and pick me up if I couldn't make it back out.
They shouldve took Glenn with them - he's the strategist of the group & he's smart enough to have several backup plans

I agree.  Watched it again today...I think both of them could have made it, Shane was just feeling defeated and felt like he needed a better chance.  It would be easier to decide if you knew how far exactly the truck was from where they were.  But I would think the thought of being eaten alive would be enough to help both of them find a new gear. The only time I would have shot Otis is if he literally could not go on and was going to be eaten alive.  And then I would have shot him in the head.

Through the rest of the season, I kept thinking they were going to run into a half-eaten Otis. That would've been morbid!

Glenn was not at the farm, he was with the rest of group in the woods/highway until the next day.
Maggie went back to get Lori that same evening, and saved Andrea by clubbing a walker from the horse.
Maggie gave directions to the group how to get to the farm, but the group stayed to search for Sophia.

The problem was that Shane didn't know what equipment he was looking for.  That's why Otis went along in the first place.

They needed a third person, but they really didn't have anyone available.  I can't see Maggie handling it at that time, and she would have been the best candidate of those who were at the farm.
