Then There Was One.......
Gregg woke up, sun shining through the dirty moss grown windows of the apartment he managed to run to, he hadn't left the room for five days since the attack on the church, he had no idea where in New York he was. Gregg had managed to eat at times when he had stopped thinking about his brother dying and loosing all of the others so fast, finally he decided that today he would make some progress and get out of the city and get to D.C.
Gregg went outside to the quiet street, the explosion attracted all of the local zombies toward it leaving Gregg free from trouble, he looked up and saw he was on Prospect Avenue , “Im pretty close to the bridge” he said to himself, so he started walking toward Manhattan.
Darkness fell and from the top of the statue of Liberty James saw the explosion, he wasn't sure what to think, he knew there was likely to be other survivors but he also knew that if he left this place the others wouldn't want him to come back, thinking he might bring trouble they decided that no one leave the island, especially since the incident at the bridge, he remembered the amount of soldiers there not letting anyone get through, and the sergeant that authorised the firing squad to mow down everyone who didn't comply. For now they were safe enough with no trouble apart from the odd stinker wandering around, but they were easily handled, everything seemed fine for the liberty survivors. Conner came running upstairs “douse the lights we've got company” he whispered, James turned down the oil lantern and readied is scoped rifle for the company they seemed to be having. A small boat was on its way from the south of Manhattan and it seemed to be military, “Shit looks like Colonel Custer has came back for more, tell the others to get ready we might have to fight them off this time” he told Conner, Conner ran as fast as he could to the others. James took aim and sighted the boats driver.
BANG the boats drivers head exploded into a cloud of red and pink mist sending his brains and skull onto his friends round about him, the boat came to a stop and suddenly a bright flood light shone up the boat , Corporal Graham raised his hands and gestured to the others to do the same, “We came to hold up our agreement, we give u the food and we get the girl, deals a deal “
“ You aint getting the girl, we decided against it” shouted the liberty leader Winston, a larger man with a bad smell and a bad attitude to go with it, he kept the people safe from these so called military jocks , but he asked for a lot in return, each on of them had to pull their weight but he never lifted a finger to help them, they were on the edge of cracking with him. “This wont go down well with the sarge and you know what happens then dont ya?” replied Graham, “ we can come to another agreement then can we not, bring him along next time and we can talk thing over” replied Winston, “on your head be it, well be back for you” said Graham in response. The boat turned around and sped away Graham turning round and giving them the finger.
Gregg had made it to 7th Street where he found a car with keys, his feet were killing him and he needed the rest, he lay up in the back seat for the nigh and drifted off into a dreamless sleep. He awoke the next morning to a tank rolling past the car, the soldiers from the church marched past, there were twelve left from the explosion, they didn't seem to notice him so he remained still and let them roll past, he noticed that they had a truck with them, the back was open and inside was what he could guess as a few wounded and dead soldiers along with the body of Tony who was tied up and struggling, he had turned into a zombie, he also noticed a badly burned man poking Tony with a sword , he recognised him as the leader from on top of the tank shouting the orders, Gregg let them go ahead a few hundred yards, then he got out and followed them. It took them four hours to get to the Bridge and what Gregg saw was astonishing, they had blocked off the foot of the bridge too the first huge pillar and he heard the moans and groans of thousands of the zombies, he could see a wall at the other side of the pillar holding the zombies against it, they were reaching up pathetic to the guards on top of it trying to get them, they just laughed back taking pot shots to any who got their attention. “Hey you, don't move” said a voice behind Gregg, Gregg complied and did as he was told, “ Your coming with me”.
