I am curious as to why members aren't allowed to talk about politics or religion. I'm not complaining, I'm just curious about it.

Well Ryan the problem is that  most people's religious and political beliefs are not based on logical, carefully thought out reasoning. The beliefs are usually based on "feelings" or sometimes that your parents imparted to you as a child.

Such an attitude does not lend itself to a calm, rational discourse on either subject. Usually it's a case of, "My minds made up, don't try to confuse me with the facts." Debating the subjects in anything but the most controlled circumstances usually degenerates to chaos, name calling, and hurt feelings.

Trust me when I say I've seen this happen many, many times over the years. Even the most well intentioned debate can turn nasty in a heartbeat.  The rule against such discussions on this forum is really for the best.

I cannot lie - the thread title drew me in with sheer excitement. When I came in, however, I was let down tremendously... :(

Probably because no matter how civilised a forum is, those discussions almost always become flame wars.

+1 for Teddy, the most badass president of all time. The disrespect of him one of the many reasons why I hate the Washington Nationals.

I can understand not wanting to talk about Religion. Somewhat i can understand about the political angle.

However, as far as the show goes, these topics are touched upon in the show, thus making them pertinent.

The one that i was really confused about was the lockdown of the guns topic....
Guns are a tool like anything else, and when discussing the ZA, to me it equivocates to locking down a thread about what screwdriver should be used to fix the radiator hose on Dale's RV.

Just sayin' :D

Good horror has to be smart horror. And by stifling conversation, we all lose out by watering down people who can be rational.

I challenge you to take TWD and edit out all pertaining to guns, religion, and politics and tell me what the running time is. LOL

I miss Teddy R. too.....

Scott,

<grin>  When people get as passionate about a Phillips Head vs. Straight screwdriver, a thread on screwdrivers would probably be as ... controversial as some of the other threads.

There are some 'hot button' topics that people tend to feel *very* strongly about, that (most) people are *never* going to change their views about, and that tend to not encourage "logical, carefully thought out reasoning", but instead degenerate into name calling, talking points and flames.  Religion and Politics are two of those hot button topics.

Guns... can be one of those topics.  It isn't always, but it is definitely on the 'watch list'.

I'm assuming you are talking about the thread started by BMW?  If so, that topic had an additional issue - it was started by a clear troll, who was looking to start a flame war.  In places, I enjoyed that thread, but I agreed with the decision to shut it down.  The initial post was about "guns on TWD", but it didn't stay with that very long (and I am raising my hand, guiltily, as one of the people that helped steer it off course).

This is actually a very 'friendly' forum.  There are people on here that I don't agree with their positions, but both sides have been careful to be respectful of the person and it has worked out.  The moderators have a tough job - they may err sometimes on the side of caution, but, honestly, I prefer that to letting the board turn into flames.

That said - I'm also a HUGE fan of "speak softly and carry a big stick".

Salute my friend, i agree that it in peoples nature to get off of topic.

I saw the state by state gun law thread that was locked down, and i agree wholeheartedly that it was having nothing to do with TWD.

Unfortunately what the starters of those threads fail to realize, that even if they are right, the way they go about it makes no one rally around their banner and it stifles real debate. (even if its about a fictitious zombie pandemic LOL)

The moderators here are great and have a lot of work without having someone come along and p!$$ in their pool.

I honestly hope i have not/will not offend them or anyone here. This forum rules.
