This thought came to me from the southern accents thread.

I always assumed that Randall was someone his group picked up on the way south, and when he said he knew Maggie from "school", I just assumed that he meant college- which did seem a bit of a far-fetched coincidence, but....

According to Wiki,  he went to High school with Maggie; presumbly local, so it makes sense he would know where the farm is.

But, why did this never come up in the discussion, or any other time? Seems strange, especially given Hersh's fondness for local people.
Even if he didn't know Maggie (and how big a school was it?) surely they would have known who he was; he woud have made some claim to sympathy based on being a neighbor shanghaied by those evil Yankees.

Randall said specifically that he knew Maggie from school, but she didn't really know him. But he did say that he knew her father, and that everybody knew who he was. As a veterinarian in a southern farming community, Hershel would be a prominent member of the community.

As to Hershel not putting in a good word for the boy he told Dale "I don't want to know," when Dale tried to convince him to speak up. At that point, Hershel was trusting Rick's judgement. It shows how the group was in a state of paranoid fear of the unknown group threatening their life. This theme will most likely be continued in season 3, and probably for the remainder of the series.

Hershel checked out mentally for a while after the barn scene.  He became withdrawn and let Rick take control of things.  I think it was a mixture of trusting Rick and weariness from being in charge of his own group for so long (only to see what they were doing end disastrously, and shatter his hopeful outlook).

I always assumed the high school Randall knew Maggie from was where the FEMA outpost was stationed.
