I have always found Charles Manson to be the most fascinating. I think it's because he actually persuaded others to do the killing for him. To me, that's some scary shit! Same could be said for Hitler, I guess. I'd classify him as a serial killer too. Although Dahmer was pretty damn creepy. Wonder if the dude ever heard of pizza? Much tastier than boiled penis, I imagine.
It's all daft. Daft like buggery, innit?

Oh, wow. So many great ones to pick from.  Jack the Ripper and the Zodiac Killer are both favorites for me because they've got so much mystery attached.  I also think Albert Fish was fascinating (and gross), and think Edmund Kemper made for some great quotables. He once said something like (I am paraphrasing from an interview question - I've seen the quote several ways):

"When I see a pretty girl walking down the street, I think two things:  One part of me wants to take her out, date her, treat her nice; the other part wonders what her head would look like on a stick."

John Wayne Gacy was festive. I like clowns.

Real life? Hard to say. Lot of those guys were the true monsters of our lives and our ancestor's lives as well. Think about this. The famous ones are the ones people hear about, yet thousands of people go missing each year. So what is the percentage of them being offed by successful serialists (not a word I know, but best one I can come up with) that have effectively hidden the bodies? Gacy did for years and so did Dahmler, likely countless of others.

I've a book in the works (when the zombie novel gets finished) that I've been working on for a few years, tossing the idea around as it were... but do have an opening chapter (kinda). This guy hides the bodies alright just not all of the body. The heads and a little blood are the only trace evidence he leaves behind. He leaves no traces of himself, not hair, skin, nothing. He posts pictures of the heads along with mocking letters to the police/FBI/Interpol on the internet and is untraceable to law enforcement thanks to fellow serialists and anarchists that thwart their efforts. Where the novel opens is him working on his 4th attack and adding 5 more to his growing body count.

Gads I got a sick mind.

I think I need to start watching Dexter.

I have to say that I agree with you with regard to Albert Fish; he was a really fascinating character. My all-time - I shouldn't say 'favourite' because how can you have a favourite serial killer unless you're seriously a touch barking yourself - word-that-isn't-'favourite' - serial killer is Peter Sutcliffe aka The Yorkshire Ripper. This is because, at the time he was active I was living in Leeds where a number of bodies were found. I recall, walking over the footbridge close to the International Pool, at about the age of four, one autumn night, feeling scared for my mother who was walking with us.

This over-riding sense of fear in Yorkshire at the time was exacerbated for me once they released the photofit of the suspect in the murders. It looked like my Dad.

So, here's an interesting little diversion for you. Which serial killers do your family members resemble?!

So you guys have turned me on to some new killers that I didn't even know about. I've never heard of Edmund Kemper. That's one helluva a quote. I guess it's safe to say that the head on a stick thing won out. LOL  I also thought Gacy was interesting. I mean how many bodies can one fit under their house before people start smelling them???

OMG! If that is true, I would have shit a brick! 4 years old and been hearing about a serial killer and the photo ends up looking like my dad? Yea... If this had happened to me... I can definitely see myself freaking out.

I've was told that I looked a lot like David Kiresh.

And I had a friend that was the spitting image of the poster of the Unabomber that was floating around.

I suppose it's a hard-sell on the look-a-like circuit isn't it? "Who do you resemble?" "Oh, Sean Connery!" "Excellent, you're hired! And you? " "Queen Elizabeth, of course!" "Brilliant, the contract is in the post! And what about you?" "Aileen Wuornos..." "Oh. Um."

I have a cousin that looks like Iggy Pop.  I don't think Iggy's ever murdered anyone, though.

As far as serial killers, I can't think of anyone in my family that looks like one.

And of course. I'm fascinated by The Ripper.

I couldn't agree more.  That book was fascinating!  (I actually realized as I was reading it that HH Holmes is buried in the same cemetery in suburban Philly as my great grandparents).  BWR, have you read Larson's other killer/history book "Thunderstruck" - it is just as readable and interesting as "Devil in White City."  It is about British killer Hawley Crippen and the invention of the telegraph.

I have always found the Ripper killings interesting just because of the intense mystery and kooky theories that surround the case.  I am going to be in London in December and just discovered that there is a "Ripper tour" you can take.  I can imagine that a dreary, dark December night would be a great time to do it!

Jeffrey Dahmer-  Thought he was Frankenstein, killed his victims then would drill holes into their head, pouring hydrochloric acid into the holes thinking they would turn into zombies/become his slaves.
