With the latest arcs it got me thinking, we know the whole planet in the show has seen the virus, but did they ever say it was worldwide in the comic?

As far as I can recall, they never hear about the global scope of the ZA in the comic.  They know it's national, and I think it's assumed that it was going on everywhere but I don't recall seeing them specifically saying this.

That's how I remember it, as well, Goat.

Judging by the communities that are kicking around, I think the number of remaining people would be much higher than most would expect.

I've always assumed it was somewhere around 300,000 - 500,000 people still alive. Sounds like a lot, but compared to the worlds population of seven billion... not really.

Tough question since we have nothing to really base it on. For example the current population of the Washington D.C. metro area is around 5.7 million. Assuming there are 2,500 survivors scattered in that area (including the hilltop, alexandra, saviors and various other communities we haven't been introduced to), that means around 0.043% of the population would have survived. Apply that to 7 billion globally, assuming the survival rate is similar globally and you'd get a little more than 3 million surviving humans worldwide, with a world full of 6.997 billion zombies. I'd like to think things are a little less grim than that though.

You have to remember that although there's say 2500 out of 5.7 million in that area, the ratio of before to after in the less populated areas would be much less, since original population was lower, and more people would choose to set up camp in less populated areas. Meaning there may be 5000 people living for every 1 million before in less populated zones, which would bring the survivors number higher than that math would indicate.

You have to consider different geographical regions that would be advantageous in a ZA. Islands, colder climates, mountains etc

My useless speculation is 3-5% survival rate, mostly spread across rural areas and fortified enclaves by current comic time.  A couple hundred million people spread across the globe would feel rather thinned out, but not completely hopeless for recovery.

I'm sure millions remain. the comic recently reviewed there's multiple settlements in just that area.. which is impressive as their location doesn't offer some strategical benefits other places could offer survivors such as mountains and islands..

And I assume these zombies freeze easily enough as the zombies in Brook's World War Z book do.. So I am assuming there are some very cold areas that aren't being haunted by zombies directly.. though I'm sure it's still very hard to survive in said areas.

You guys should read World War Z if you haven't. it discusses the nature of a zombie apocalypse on both a very close up level as well as globally. I think for the most part you can assume that life in TWD is working similar, however the infestation is far more sever in TWD it appears because apparently there is TOTAL collapse of all military..
