Bernthal's a total dude...
And I love that idea, but like he said, what really went down was still pretty much what he wanted.

Personally, I wouldn't have cared for that ending. I was never in favor of those 'suicide by cop' theories. I'm glad it was rejected- no offense to Jon Bernthal.

Curious to know why you wouldn't be in favor of that, Gracie. The two things that kept Shane motivated to keep going were "taken away" from him by his best friend and - in his mind - he no longer had anything to live for since he knew he couldn't co-exist with anyone in the group any more. Seems like the perfect ending to a derranged soul's peculiar fall from grace.

I just prefer that he goes crazy and tries to kill Rick because he wants it all for himself. In this instance, suicide would have seemed a little too selfless and out of character, IMO. Shane always thought he was the better man. I don't see him giving up on purpose. Plus, it would have made him in control of the situation, ultimately, and not beneficial for Rick's character arc.

Didn't he say on a radio interview that he wanted zombie Shane to say "Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiick..." before being put down?

I never quite bought the whole "he just went crazy" thing (never really seemed like a coherent plotline, even in the comics), so Bernthal's ending suits me fine. I have to wonder if that was the original ending planned by Darabont.

I think it would be really hard to hold onto your sanity in a world like that. Especially, after making some of the choices Shane did. To me, it just sounds like Bernthal wanted his character to go out in a better light than he did.

In most of the interviews I've seen, and I've seen alot. Jon Bernthal tries to paint Shane in a good light. However, I know most people would disagree. I personally felt cheated even though I've read the comics. There wasn't enough time devoted to him in the comics so it didn't matter. But 2 whole seasons of TV with Shane this and Shane that, and then they kill him off, and not only kill him off but he's gone totally insane when Rick kills him. Total bummer!
It's all daft. Daft like buggery, innit?

Were you one of the many that wanted Shane to go out in some redemptive heroic fashion?

Well, Shane could be selfish and kinda jerky sometimes. But he could also be a good friend and very protective of the people he cared about. I felt like I got to see all aspects of Shane even more so than anyone else. He was good one episode, and bad the next. I think it would have been neat for everyone to have been at their wits end with him, and he decides to do something selfless that ultimately proved everyone wrong. Personally, I like to see the good in everyone and it pained me to see him try and kill his best friend. Honestly, it would have been nice for him not to go out at all. But alas, this was Rick's story, not Shane's.

I think that while they strayed fairly far from the comic with Shane's character by keeping him alive much longer than his GN counterpart, they still ultimately wanted to draw him closer back to his source material thus the reasoning behind the death that he got (while still holding a slight twist).
And babs, I love Andrea and everything, but it's an epic fail in comparison to your other avi.

I'm sorry. I got to missing Shane, so I put on Andrea's "I want me some Shane" face. Shall I stick with Jane K? In the famous words of Bono "I still... haven't found... what I'm lookin for".

It's just a horrible pic of Andrea. Her teeth look like there's a quarter inch gap between each tooth and it looks as though someone draped a crappy wig over her bald head
Its almost as if Andrea got crossed up with The Hills Have Eyes.
Oh and you can play ping pong on that forehead...

Look up at the pic of her in the video.
Even though her eyes are closed, it looks like she is thinking about doing the nasty with Jon.

Dang... that's harsh. LOL
I'm with Serenity on this one... I think she looks like someone who wants to drink a big, tall glass of Shanerade! HA!

I told Babs somewhere else that picture looked like I just pointed a gun at Andrea and said, "Okay baby, now let's see what you look like without the clothes."

Hey BWR, you've given me an idea for a thread:
Name that Poster!
"Doe Eyed Fangirl" Babs
"Grumpy old sod" BWR
"Sailor Captain" Major Tom
"Slightly confused about username" Major... Sapper
&c. &c.
The challenge is to describe the poster in no more than five words without using their name. Winner stays on...

I think Bernthal must be a really nice guy!
And his version was really cool, although even with the chosen version of Shane's death we are left with some doubts that Shane wanted to be killed, in fact...

Mazzara has stated that it wasn't written that way (suicide by cop), and I happen to agree, but I have my own version of other things that might not go along with what the writers intended, so...
Jon does come across as a really nice guy. When I first met him last summer, I didn't want his character to die because he just seemed genuine, and so thankful to fans. I got over it, but still.

I like the idea about the gun being empty. It adds another layer to the whole scene and makes it that more interesting.
What I would have preferred was what "looked like" might have been his demise way back when the s2 trailer first came out last summer. Shane running and leading a horde of walkers away from the group and going down in a blaze of glory and heroic redemption! Yeah!
How that would fit into the storyline? It wouldn't. But I would have changed A LOT of the whole season...
Very cool to hear the actors version of an important scene. Thanks for posting!

Just want to know what you guys think of his ending? I think it would have been a bit cooler and would have held his death higher in Ricks mind, more than the original. Talk about messing with someone's head! It would have shown that Shane did love Rick and didn't want to kill him
