I thought it was because he diddnt want his friends remains to be eaten by thee freaks. It was really early on in the ZA and I dont think they knew tha walkers only went after "living" things. I know I wouldn't want my loved ones remains torn apart.

After re-watching TS-19 (the flashback), I'm more convinced that Shane was unsure whether Rick was dead or alive. When he first came into the room, the power was still on. Meaning that the equipment was still showing Rick's vitals. He even admitted to Lori that she wouldn't have left if he had told her the circumstances.
Again, I'm not saying that he did it maliciously, he did the best he could in that situation.

How about Jim (from Season 1)? What if he survived his bite? and developed antibodies to the virus? And showed back up again?

I really hope an immunity or cure is never found and this is how life is for the survivors. The idea's been tossed around that
Spoiler
- Sorry if that's gruesome but isn't that the point? And besides, f**k Lori. <_< I'm also not even sure if that was an appropriate spoiler tag but I'm new

I doubt the writers will have Lori miscarry since the baby seems to have survived the car wreck. Of course, they could do that with another female character down the road.

It could make sense for Rick to be immune. What if Shane was right and Rick was in fact dead in the hospital and then came back to life or “reanimated”. Rick probably has no clue because how could he know if he died in the hospital. Considering how long he was in the hospital (24hrs or more) without food, water etc. He may have something in his DNA that is different. It would make sense as others have posted Carl would be immune, when Carl was shot Rick told Hershel they had the same blood type they could also share immunity to the virus. Shane was very adamant about believing Rick to be dead, some could say he (Shane) just wanted to have a clear conscious, but when it showed them in the hospitalI believed that Shane believed Rick was dead.

If Rick did reanimate, I think that would put a new spin on Lori's pregnancy. Can a reanimated person reproduce? If not, the baby has to be Shane's.

A reanimated Rick, or similar situation, also opens up new questions/issues in relation to a Christian afterlife and the dead rising.
