Chapter 13
Our Home
"Good job Adam. Look here Terrance, Greg did something useful with his last moments with us." Proclaimed one of the voices I recognized as the ginger haired man from the theatre. I had never asked Ben who made it out of his encounter with them, now I knew that the two notable ones that I assumed to be the leaders of the group were still alive. It was daunting.
"We have issues right now Blake. Hey boy... Don't be scared, we aren't gonna hurt you if we don't have to." Called out one of the figures as they began to walk toward me, revealing the man I had saw in the theatre with the long white scruffy hair and beard. I backed away slowly and reached in my back pocket feeling out my 10mm, eyes gazing over to the rifle that was leaning next to the stool.
"We're only after your supplies. If you hand over everything without grief, we'll give you enough to survive and get on out of here." Explained Terrance, nodding his head as he stopped and crouched down look at me. I had a gross glare on my face, but you could tell I was scared and he knew it.
"Yeah, but only the men right Terrance? How many people you guys got anyway?" Asked Blake, bluntly giving Terrance a slight nudge to which Terrance reacted by slapping him on the shoulder. Blake jumping away acting as if he didn't know what he did was wrong.
"We have more men than I can count. We all go free." I bluffing, looking stern as I rose to my feet looking at Terrance who was cocking his head to me.
"How bout you give us the real answer, or we'll shoot you and your friend right now?" Terrance said, a serious look on his face as he stared at me without blinking. I felt my voice leave me as I stared at him, not knowing what to do.
"Seven Men. Two Women! We all go free please!" Blurted out Pete in a plea, I bit my lip and stared at the ground in dissapointment.
"Only nine people? Heh... Your not really in the position to be making suggestions boy. You are at our mercy. Consider yourself lucky we aren't killing you. Here, I'll make it easy for you. Take your supplies now, and go on. You don't have to watch what's going to happen to those girls. But, we all have needs boy." Explained Terrance, with an evil toothy grin on his face as he began to walk forward past me and into the Wal Mart. I couldn't move, the thought of Molly being raped by these men and me being able to do nothing about it. It drove me insane.
"This is some bullshit..." Called out a voice, as I turned my head to see a figure block Terrance's path. A loud bang echoed through the Wal Mart, and shot through my eyes causing me to whince as the figure dropped to his knees holding his ribs and falling flat on his stomach. I gasped and felt myself begin to shake.
"Only thing worse than a Walker is a nigger..." Chuckled Terrance, and I made out the figure to be Ben laying in the middle of the entrance, bleeding from his left side. I let out a loud yell, and rose to my feet rushing forward pulling my 10mm out from behind my pants.
Blake pulled his a large black metal rifle out from behind his back, and aimed his sights on me that minute I pulled my gun out. I pointed the gun upwards at Terrance, and it seemed as though times slowed down. Terrance had a smug look on his face as he walked past the checkout aisles, and a loud series of bangs echoed out through the Wal Mart in only a few seconds. I stopped as I watched blood spray came out from one side of Terrance to the tiles and he fell limply to floor. I shot around to look down the checkout aisle, to see Frank with a large military machine gun in hand running toward the entrance. He began to mow at the open entrance randomly being careful to not hit the windows too much, Blake jumped out of the way behind the wall dissapearing from my sight. The highbeams of the trucks bursted into the Wal Mart and the engine began to roar.
Frank shot forward and mowed the rest of his clip into the front of the truck as he peeled into the reverse and spun around in the parking lot. Frank stopped firing, and stared at the truck as it sped away. Frank threw the gun down on the ground and turned his back to stare at me standing in the entrance of the Wal Mart with a disgruntled look on his face.
"What... happened?!" He screamed, as he walked up to me face red and angry giving me a slight shove and staring me down.
"I... we..." I mumbled not knowing what to say, not wanting to reveal the truth to Frank. Not wanting to admit the truth to myself.
"Adam let them in... stole my key... I watched the whole thing." Explained Pete with sorrow, looking over to me with remorse as I stared at him letting out a loud sigh as I saw Frank give a disgusted look.
"I knew it, I told you this would happen. What do we do now? They know we are weak, we have a large encampment for a small group, we look intimidating. They attack with twenty men we are dead. And they know it! Its only a matter of time now! That Military Rifle trick was a one time thing, I saved for emergencies only, we had one box of ammo and I just wasted it because of you let a boy in, a boy who let the people who want to kill us into our home, where we sleep and got Ben shot! Ben! A guy who was your only friend here." Screamed Frank, as he gave bursted forward at me grabbing onto my shoulder looking as though he wanted to punch me but let go as more of the group came onto the scene, Julie staying behind to tend to Ben's gun shot wound.
"Walkers are going to be showing up soon. So many gunshots..." Explained Matt, I had seen him around a few times in the store but this was the first time I had ever seen him say more than two words. He looked worried.
"You don't know that!" Snapped Pete, as he glanced back at Ben and then to me giving me a look of distrust as if I had shot Ben.
"They'll definately be in the area." Agreed Sven with Matt, as he began toward the door pulling one of them shut and wrapping the chain back around the door.
"Nate did this, Nate got Ben shot. And he's gonna sit here... where we are supposed to feel safe? Nuh uh. Not around my wife." Intruded Harry into the conversation, taking a step toward me and towering over me, I was sitting on the ground still in shock of Frank's little outburst and saving me.
I slowly crawled past Frank and Harry on my hands and knees like a dog, all the way over to Ben who was holding the side of his bloody shirt, eyes wide open in shock, machete still clenched in his hand. I put my hands over him and began to shake violently as Julie patted me on the shoulder and said something but I couldn't only make out jibberish. Adam's face kept flashing in my mind, followed by those people that got away, and then to Terrance the son of a bitch that was laying as a corpse a couple feet away from me, the bastard that shot Ben. I turned my head in shock over to Frank, who was looking at me with a tired, frusturated look. We stared eachother down for a moment, I was beginning to realize all the mistakes I had made. Frank's rules were to keep us alive, and if I had listened... this wouldn't have happened. And they are still out there. And I knew it. I only didn't know how soon they would return, that is until the familiar head beams hit me in the face.
"Everybody back!" Screamed Frank, as he began to sprint away from the entrance with the rest of the group following behind him. I watched Frank grab Julie and pull her away from Ben, but I couldn't find the motivation to move I only watched.
The trucks tires screeched as we began to hear gunshot after gunshot from outside and then shattered glass that fell to the floor like rain over the entrance, they making sure not to miss a single window with there bullets, shattering some to millions of pieces and other only a few holes in them. I pressed myself into the ground as I watched bullets fly past me, covering my head and looking toward Ben who's eyes were closed now sending a chilling feeling down my spile.
Suddenly, the fire just ceased as I heard a faint whine wreak out from outside and then the roar of an engine getting softer and softer until dissapearing. I clenced the 10mm in my hand tightly, and pointed it at the ground as I rose to my feet. I looked behind me to see Frank, pointing at the ground frantically attempting to make me sit down. But, I kept going... it was like I was in a trance. Like I was supposed to go to that entrance. I didn't know what I would find, but I knew it was something I had to face.
I stepped outside the entrance and peered around the parking lot, to see Adam sitting on the ground with a pistol in hand and I immedietely stopped looking at him in confusion. He was whimpering, with tears coming down his eyes and snot coming down his nose. He didn't know what happened, he didn't know that those people would shoot Ben. I began to feel a similiar feeling as I did in the theatre and let a sigh escape my lips as I took a step toward him reaching my hand out. He simply rose the pistol up, shaking like crazy gun quivering around my face.
Adam pulled the trigger, Click!
