I haven't finished it yet (just started actually), but I have to read this in conjuction with What Now My Love as part of an assignment for a literature class.

We actually watched 3/4th's of the movie the other day and I hadn't read the book yet (which I was supposed to do before watching...), so I had no clue what I was in for. To say I couldn't get into it is an understatement and I don't remember how many times I said "WTF?" while watching.

Now that I've had time to read a good chunk of it, I'm able to understand it better (obviously) and have actually come to appreciate its unique take into the world of drugs. I've actually enjoyed what I've read thus far from Fear and Loathing (as well as What Now My Love), and I'm going back and watching clips on Youtube and finding it hilarious (albeit wild - I'll go back and watch the full movie later; unfortunately it's not on Netflix and I'm too cheap to fork over the lousy $10 it probably costs...); easily beats reading the likes of Passing or Tartuffe (although Tartuffe isn't bad).

It's a very clever spin on subjective journalism (my professor will remind you constantly, "It is NOT a novel!"), and well worth the read. The movie is also well worth watching (its got Johnny Depp and Del Torro for crying out loud), but it's better if you've read the book first - otherwise, you may be like me with this  wtf look on your face the whole time.

Anyone else read the book or watched the film? They're both very wild to say the least...

Oh and the author, Hunter S. Thompson, also wrote the Rum Diary which - of course - stars Depp as well. Also, in the movie Rango, Depp's character (the lizard - which Raul Drake, played by Depp, sees lizards constantly while trippin' out on acid althroughout Fear and Loathing), gets ran over on the highway by a red convertible which in fact has Depp's Fear and Loathing character and his attorney (Gonzo) inside. Very clever intertwinement of past books and movies Depp and Thompson have collaborated on.

And I still can't figure out how to embed Youtube videos... I clicked the Media button and inserted the link in the middle of the tags yet it still doesn't work. What gives?

I am not a big Hunter Thompson fan and I have a hard time finding humor in addiction.

I watched the movie,Fear and Loathing, and my recollection is of a dark and depressing story.

There have been several films about H.T. I saw Where the Buffalo Roams with Bill Murray. I thought it was bad. I am tempted to check out The Rum Diaries. The trailers look good.

My impression of Thompson is a brilliant guy who squandered his life on excesses and fell short of what he might have done if he had been more moderate.

I could be totally wrong and maybe there is a place for those who burn the candle at both ends. I have done my share of booze and drugs but it only made me more confident that moderation is the road to take.

BTW, the DVD is available from Netflix if you are a dual subscriber for mail as well as streaming.
For a reasonable fee, I will quell minor outbreaks, enforce quarantines, and dispatch infected relatives.

I'm a BIG HST fan. I think it's best to read the book and then watch the movie. I love both. on the DVD his commentary is classic. There are a couple REALLY good docs about him.

He lived his life by his own rules and even exited on his own terms. Some of his work towards the end was not as great as his early work, but I enjoyed it all.

RIP Hunter. a true rebal
