Chris, I have some questions for you :D

1) Will we find out for sure what happened to the first group that went out? Or
Spoiler

2) Erica hotwired the car back in chapter 2 LOL I've thought up all kinds of crazy theories explaining how she would know how to do that, so my question is will we find out how she got so awesome and learned how to hotwire cars?

I know right!! Always leaving us wanting more.

1) Other group's dead. No discussion value there.

2) She's just a badass? Naw, that's not sufficient. Keep in mind that Erica survived for three months on her own in a zombie infested world. She had to learn how to hotwire or else she would have gotten nowhere. And I wouldn't call her a deliquent, just a city girl who get a little rebellious in her teens.

Chapter 7

It was a resltess night. I spent most of it lying on my back, staring at the ceiling until I finally closed my eyes.

A beam of sunlight shining in my face wakes me up. I look around the room. Everyone is still sound asleep, except for Erica. She is still sitting in the same chair she was sitting in when I went to sleep. I quietly ask her if she was awake all night, as to not wake the others.

“Couldn’t sleep.” She mumbles.

“Do you… want to talk about what happened?”

She slightly raises her head and looks at me. I can’t read her eyes. They seem to be devoid of any emotion. She gets up and gestures me to follow her. We go outside. It’s bright out today. There’s a nice breeze and the temperature is pleasant.

“See that van over there?” Erica says while walking towards an old, white Mercedes van. “I’m gonna see if it still works. We can fit a lot more in there than in the SUV.”

“Straight back to business?” I am baffled by how Erica copes with the loss of Jeremy.

“We don’t have a choice.” She coldly replies. She pries the passenger’s side open and gets to work.

“It’s just that, you know, you seemed very upset about it last night.”

There’s no reply. She can be stubborn, but so can I.

I raise my voice. “Nobody stays up the entire night if nothing’s bothering them!”

Erica stops what she’s doing and gets out of the car. She looks angry.

“What do you think?! Ofcourse, it bothers me! I got out alive and he didn’t! Now I’ve got to tell his children their daddy isn't coming back! I’ve been going over and over the situation in my head, figuring out ways I could have helped him! I’m responsible for his death!”

“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to offend.”

“Of course you didn’t.” She sighs angrily. “Go wake the others, we’re leaving.”  She turns around and walks back to the van.

“I just want you to know, it wasn’t your fault. There’s nothing you could have done. He gave his life willfully.” After I say this, she freezes on the spot for a short moment before she continuing her work.

We are back on the road. We siphoned some gas from the cars at the motel 6 and departed to where Jeremy and Erica left the SUV to pick up the supplies we’d already gathered. David and Ted are sitting quietly in the back. They are taking the loss of Jeremy the hardest. I don’t understand Kevin. He prayed when the news hit, but now he seems to have gone back to his usual, quiet self. I look to my left, at Erica behind the wheel. She can be a very stoic woman. I think she’s just keeping up appearances for the sake of morale though, if our conversation this morning was any indication.

“There’s the car.” Erica says, as she accelerates. There are a couple of loud bumps. She ran over some walkers still hanging around the SUV. Blood partially covers the windshield.

“Go finish them.” Erica orders me and Kevin.

It’s not so hard anymore, killing walkers. Once you realize there’s not a shred of humanity left in them, what’s there to kill? Kevin and I easily dispatch the four walkers. One good blow to the head is all it takes.

While the others are moving the supplies from the SUV into the van, I take a look around the scene. There are some dead walkers lying in a row. Must have been Jeremy. There’s a trail of shotgun shells leading to the field that goes to the forest, just as Erica said. Plenty of footprints too. David joins me.

“He went that way?” He asks.

“Seems like it. Just look at the shell casings and the footprints.”

“Then that’s where we’re going.” David sounds determined.

“Whoah, whoah!” Erica interrupts. “You’re not actually going to look for him in there, are you?”

“Fuck yes we are.” David is agitated. “You can stay here if you want, but we’re looking out for our own! Just like Jeremy would have.”

“It’s a nice sentiment, but morals don’t apply in this world anymore! You’re going to get yourselves killed!”

“Well, fuck you! You can guard the van while we’re gone!”

Erica looks as if she wants to object, but quickly realises nobody is going to back her up. She and Ted stay behind.

As we walk towards the forest, I feel scared. But the last thing this group needs is to fall apart. This is our second day in the outside world and we’re already divided. I won’t allow the group to be broken. I’d die first.

Yes, there's a left 4 dead reference in here.

Chapter 8

The walk through the forest is actually quite nice. Birds are chirping and we spot little rabbits playing around. Humanity may have to shit, but nature is thriving. I’m sure there’s a deeper meaning behind that. Al Gore would have made a movie out of it.

We follow the trail. It’s easy to follow, walkers aren’t known for their discretion.  Here and there we find an empty shell casing, suggesting Jeremy made it pretty far into the woods. Another giveaway is the fact that we haven’t found a body eaten to the bone yet. The tracks stop at a large creek. We wade through the creek, but once we get to the other side there are no tracks to be seen. We check very far upstream and downstream, but there are no tracks on dry land.

“He must’ve fled through the river! You two go upstream, I’ll go downstream!” David quickly turns around to leave. I grab his shoulder to stop him.

“Dave, we can’t split up. Going alone is too dangerous.” I say calmly.

“B-but…”

“Dead end, kid. Face it.” Kevin says in a matter-of-fact tone.

David glares angrily at him. He looks at me. “But we can still go either up-or downstream, right?”

“We can, yes. We gotta leave something here to remind us where to get out of the water, though.” I tear my left sleeve off my T-shirt. I wade back to where we came from and tie the sleeve to a treebranch.

We agree to go upstream. It seems logical Jeremy would have chosen that direction. Maybe he thought it could slow down the walkers.

After wading upstream for a while, we notice something splashing in the water. A walker is lying face-first in the creek and it doesn’t seem to be able to get up. Kevin kills it with his hammer. Upon closer inspection, it seems this walker had its right knee blown out. I point it out to the others.

“So he did go this way!” David exclaims happily.

“Well, I’ll be…” Kevin says as he rests his hands on his hips.

We discuss the possibilities. David’s pumped full of new hope and wants to keep looking immediatly. Kevin notes that Jeremy must be running out of bullets if he’saiming for the knees. He theorizes that Jeremy shot it in the knee so others would trip over it, giving him more time to get away. I suggest the possibility that he was getting tired and wasn’t able to aim properly anymore. David dismisses my suggestion, saying that I shouldn’t “think the worst”. I’m not thinking the worst, I’m just being realistic. But I decide to refrain from voicing that opinion. We move on.

We follow the river for at least half an hour. We all stop almost simultaneously at the distinguishable sound of moaning walkers. It sounds like there are a lot of them. We quietly sneak through the forest until we get them in our sights. They’re all standing in front of a very steep hill, seemingly trying to grab something above them that is no longer there.

“You think Jeremy-” David whispers but is quickly shushed by Kevin. I signal them with my hand to turn around. There’s a loud snap. I stepped on a branch. We all just freeze. For a moment, there’s utter silence. Then there's a loud growl. Followed by another, and then another. Multiple growls sound through the forest at the same time.

“Shit! Shiiit! They’re coming!” Kevin panics and starts running.

“Run for your life! Quick!” I scream at David. I sprint past him, following Kevin. We run back through the creek.

Running from walkers is tougher than I had expected. They can only run at a jogging temp, but they don’t get tired. I already feel my legs cramp up and I’m gasping for air. Every time I feel I’m slowing down I force myself to pick up the pace.

BLAM.

I look back. David’s standing in place, trying to pick off walkers.

BLAM.

He missed both shots. What the hell is he thinking? Now he’s grown a pair off balls!? I run back and grab him by hisshirt, pulling him with me.

“This is not the time!” I yell at him. “We move, now!” I push him ahead of me.

Thanks to David, I can’t see Kevin anymore. We just keep on running. After what seemslike an eternity I can see the sleeve on the right side of the creek. We run into the forest, following the tracks on the ground. I feel a great sense of relief when I finally exit the forest. I can see Ted yelling at us from the van, telling us to “hurry up.” I jump into the van, followed by David. Kevin already got in ahead of us. Ted is the last one to get in.

“We’re all here! Go!” He yells to Erica. We leave with screaming tires.

“Well?”Erica asks after a while.

David smiles. “He’s alive.”

I like David but he has "more courage than sense" trying to take on all those walkers by himself and at least they know that Jeremy is alive...for the moment anyway.

In this chapter, the gang visits a TWD TV series location. I bet you can guess where they are.

Chapter 9

We spent the night in the van. Sleeping in a van with four other people is just as uncomfortable as it sounds. Regardless, I did get a good night’s rest. Just knowing that Jeremy is alive and kicking ass somewhere out there, it makes me feel at ease. Maybe we’ll see him again, back at the supermarket.

I wake up to the sound of Erica’s voice. “So it won’t be long from there?” It’s coming from outside.

“Yes.They’ve got some big houses there, too. Might even get to sleep in an actual bed, this time!” Ted sounds like his old,  optimistic self again. Seems like I’m not the only one taking the good news well. I hop out of the van.

“Did I hear someone say “an actual bed”?”

“Sure did, son. We’re going to Sharpsburg. Plenty of rich folk used to live there.”

“Is it far?”I ask.

“Should be there before sunset, if everything goes our way.”

“Don’t jinx us, Teddy.” Erica replies. She looks at me. “Wake ‘em, we’re leaving.”

I wake Kevin and David. David tells me to “go fuck myself”. Whatever, let’s see him try to sleep in a moving van. Ted gets behind the wheel and we’re off to another day on the road.

I grab some food way in the back. We don’t have much on us. Some sweets and soda we picked up at the gasstation and half a crate of canned food from the supermarket. I take some chips and vitamin water. What a breakfast. The vitamin water tastes like shit, there’s no flavor to it anymore. Well, it did lay in a nonfunctional freezer for six months, what did I expect?

“Let the bottle go ‘round.”  Erica says. “We need to ration our food.”

I pass the vitamin water to David. He takes a sip. He frowns as if he just took a large bite out of a lemon. We all share a laugh about it. It’s a miracle that when the world has gone to shit, there are still moments like this. Moments of fraternization.

As the sun is halfway set, we enter a rural area. Erica tells Ted to slow down. I take a look out of the back window. The town has a nice, old-fashioned feel to it. Even the bar looks like it’s straight from the Wild West. We stop in front of  a large, white house.

“Alright, guys. Listen up.” Erica says as she turns to us in her seat.”We’ll be staying in this house for the night, but first things first. I saw a couple of stores back up the road. We’re going to grab as much food and other useful supplies as possible. We’re only entering stores in pairs or with the whole group. Ted, you okay staying here?”

“Sure am, miss. I’ll just stay in the van until you come back.”

The four of us walk down the street. It’s a really nice town. It’s been mostly untouched by the dead. Kevin seperates from the group to visit a pharmacy. Erica quickly goes after him. She tells me and David they’ll catch up with us.

As we move on the the grocery store, we come across the old-timey bar. David is immediatly attracted to it.

“I could definitely use a stiff drink.” He says and stars walking toward the bar.

“Dave, wait!” I call to him. “Is this really the time to get drunk?”

“Just acouple of shots.”  He laughs. “And then some more!”

“Come on, man. We got more pressing issues. Let’s just go see what that grocery store has to offer.”

“You can handle yourself.” David replies.

“Didn’t you listen to Erica? We’re not going anywhere alone.”

“Fuck her.” He says and turns to face the bar.

As David enters the bar I look back to the pharmacy. Kevin and Erica are still there.

“Fuck.” I run after David, into the bar.

The first thing I notice as I enter the bar is an awful reeking smell. Then I notice two corpses on the barfloor, one’s behind the bar and the other is lying against the wall on the left. David’s obviously shocked by this.

“Now I really need a drink.” He says and hops over the bar and grabs a bottle of wine. He starts drinking from the bottle.

“Hey, man. Easy with the booze. I don’t think this place is safe.”

David stops drinking.“Dead bodies give that away?”

“Not just that. Look at the windows. Some of ‘em have been blown out. Others have bulletholes.” I say and point at one of the upper windows.

“Shit, you’re right.” He says and continues drinking.

“Would you stop?!” I’m starting to lose my patience.

David loudlyputs the bottle down on the counter. “Those corpses are months old, man. Relax.Besides, they look like they were shot in the head. They're not gonna turn into walkers.”

“Well, I don’t like it. I don’t want to stay any longer in this bar, in this town, than necessary. Come on, if Erica-“

Fuck. Her.” He angrily interrupts me.“What has she done for us?!” I think the alcohol is getting to his head.

“Dave,Listen-“

“No, you listen! I don’t trust Erica one bit. I think she’d betray us all in a heartbeat, just like she did Jeremy!”

“She didn’t betray Jeremy! He sacrifised himself so she could get away.”

“Yeah, that’s what she says. I don’t believe a word of it.” David takes another large sip.

I let out a frustrated sigh. “This is obviously the booze talking, Dave.” I try to take the bottle away from him.

“No, it’s the truth!” He yells at me and quickly pulls the bottle away from me. “Even if she didn’t cause Jeremy’s death onpurpose, she didn’t even want to go looking for him! Too dangerous, my ass.Just saving her own skin!” Jeremy takes a couple more sips. “I’m telling you, man, she won’t help you if you’re in trouble. She’ll just leave you there so she can get away! She cares about noone but herself!”

I leave the bar without saying a word. Fuck David. If something happens to him while he’s shitfaced, it’s not my, nor Erica’s, fault.

I doubt Jeremy would get back to the store, it sounds like they travelled quite far.

Also I think u referred to David as Jeremy in the penultimate sentence?

Chapter 10

As soon as I walked out of the bar Erica demanded to know where David was. I told her he wasgetting drunk in the bar. She called him outside. Then ensuing fight was notpretty. She called him a “drunkard” and he called her a “treacherous bitch”. I’ve never seen anyone faint by getting  kicked in the nuts. Kevin has to carry David back to the house while Erica and I go to the store.

“Fucking idiot.” Erica growls.

“He had it coming.” I answer as I hold the door open for her.

“I know. It felt good, too.” Erica smiles.

“Heh, I bet.I wanted to sock him one, too.”

“No, it’s not just that.” Erica sighs. “I needed to relief some stress. Losing my family…Jeremy…”

“Hey, I told you that wasn’t your fault-”

Erica interrupts me.  “No, I realize that now. Jeremy sacrifised himself for me. If it wasn’t for him we’d both be dead.” A couple of tears roll down her cheeks. “The situation in Atlanta was hopeless. There’s nothing I could have done for my family, either.”

“That’s gotta make you feel a little better, right?”

“No, no it doesn’t. But it brings closure. And then that asshole starts calling me a murderer and a traitor. I just lost it. He should be glad I didn’t kick him when he was down.”

I smile at her in a way that tells her, “I understand.” There’s a surprisingly large amount of useful supplies to be found in the store. There are a couple of flashlights in the back and loads of canned food. We decide to take with us whatever we can and come back in the morning to put the rest in the van. With our hands full we return to the house.

The town is still suprisingly serene. Not many people lived here, even before the apocalypse. Makes sense not many walkers would be here, also why nobody’s scavenging here. People probably think a small town like this can’t possibly have anything useful to loot.

As we arrive back at the house we see that David has regained consciousness.

“Don’t you ever call me that again.” Erica says as she sends an angry glare in David’s direction. David just groans.

“Miss, I took his gun. I figured he shouldn’t be using this when he doesn’t have a clear head.” Ted says as he holds David’s revolver out in front of him. Erica thanks him and takes the gun, stuffing it in between the back of her jeans and her belt.

We put the food and other supplies in the van. Erica decides to leave David in there while we’re clearing the house. It’s not like David is in any position to disagree.

As I enter the house, I’m suprised by how nice it all still looks. It looks like the inhabitants left in a hurry so it’s a bit messy, but that’s about it. The living room is huge. These people have the longest corner sofa I’ve ever seen, plus two regular sofas. There’s an open fireplace in the middle of the room, and it looks like it’s in working order.

Erica and Ted go to check upstairs while Kevin and I check the downstairs area. We enter the kitchen. These people had a marble kitchen. It’s really beautiful. Light’s shining through the framework of the folding doors in the back, revealing small children’s toys in the backyard. A slide, small plastic buckets and some action figures, among others. It make us both feel uncomfortable.

We walk back to the living room and go to check up on Ted and Erica’s progress.

“Nothing here?” I ask Erica.

“Doesn’t seem like it.” She looks over my shoulder at Ted. “You see anything on your end?”

“No, miss, just this gotta check room and then-“ Ted suddenly goes quiet.

“Ey, what’s wrong?” Kevin asks. Ted gestures with his hand for us to join him. “Do you hear that?”

I don’t hear anything. I press my right ear against the door and hear a faint hissing sound. The others do the same.

“A walker. Be ready, guys, I’m opening the door.” Erica says and slowly opens the door. We all hold on to our weapons tightly. She opens the door a crack. She takes a flashlight out of her pocket and slowly continues opening the door. Once the door’s been opened a little further, Erica lights the room with the flashlight and pokes her head in. After looking around for a while, she pushes the door open completely.

“I don’t see anything.” As soon as she says this the hissing sound becomes a lot more audible. She shines her flashlight all around the room, but whatever is makingthat noise is nowhere to be seen. Erica carefully steps into the room, walks towards a window and opens the rolling shutter.

Sunlight largely lights the room. We can finally see what the purpose of the room is. It’s a baby room, the walls a light green color and all white furniture.

HISSS.

“Holy Christ!” Ted jumps. “Where the hell is that coming from?!”

I look around the room. I look at the clothing cabinet, the dresser. Too close to the wall for a walker to hide behind, too low on the ground to hide underneath. Then it finally hits me.

“Oh God. It’s coming from the crib.”

What a treat, two chapters at once!

Chapter 11

I slowly walk up to the crib. “Please, let me be wrong” is all I’m thinking right now. I stop at the crib and take a deep breath. I slightly bend over and take a look in the crib. I was right. Why did I have to be right?

It’s looking at me with its faded eyes, hissing loudly, reaching at me with its small, pale and necrotic arms. I quickly turn away from the crib and throw up.

I hear Kevin say, “That’s fucked up. “ That’s one way to describe it.

“We… We can’t keep it like this.” Ted says from the doorway.

“I’ll take care of it.” Erica takes David’s gun out of her belt and grabs a nearby pillow. “You don’t want to see this. Go wait downstairs.”

We take Erica up on her offer. Ted and Kevin hurry down the stairs. I close the door behind me and follow them. David’s laying on the corner sofa, looking suprised at the sight of us rushing down the stairs.

“What happened? You’re all pale as hell.” He says.

Neither Ted nor Kevin say anything, they just sit down on the other sofa. “It’s better if you don’t know.” I say, while I too take a seat.

David looks at me quizzingly. “Whatever you say. Where’s Erica?”

We all remain silent. A few seconds later a muffled gunshot echoes from upstairs.

“The fuck?!” David jumps up. He snaps when he sees Erica coming downstairs. She’s holding the smoking revolver in her right hand, the blood-soaked pillow in the other.

“What the fuck did you do?! I only had two bullets left in that thing! You-“

I rise and punch David in the stomach, causing him to fall to the ground. “David. Shut. The fuck. Up. She just had to shoot an infected baby! Don’t you even dare togive her shit!”

David mouth drops open. “S-sorry… I didn’t know…” David struggles to find the right words.“Noone told me…”

“I’m going to bed.” Erica says and walks back upstairs and takes a room on the left.

We all just silently look at eachother. As we do this, a terrifying thought comes to my mind. That baby wasn’t bit. I couldn’t spot any bite marks. A small baby like that would’ve gotten eaten completely by an adult walker. The parents must’ve forgotten the baby while they evacuated. The only conclusion I can draw from this is that the baby died of malnutrition, then turned into a walker. So that means, no matter how you die, you will turn into one of them. This very thought sends shivers down my spine. I decide not tot share this thought with the others, though, I don’t think they can handle it right now.

Chapter 12

For the first time in six months, I slept in an actual bed. But what good does that do if you can’t even sleep? How could anyone, after what we saw yesterday. After what I realised. It’s been bothering me the entire night. I need to tell someone about it.

I get out of bed and walk over to Erica’s room on the other side of the hall. I knock on her door. I open the door a wee bit.

“Are you up yet?” I whisper.

“Yeah, come in.” Erica replies.

As I enter the room, I notice the bed is empty. Erica’s sitting in a chair near an open window, looking out of. She inhales deeply and lets out a heavy sigh.

“Nice weather, isn’t it?” She says without looking at me.

“You don’t have to keep up appearances for me, you know.”

She looks at me. There they are again, those emotionless eyes. It kind of creeps me out. “I killed a baby.”

“That was no baby. Not anymore.”

“Doesn’t make it any easier.” As she says this, she leans backwards. I notice something reflecting in the sunlight.

“Erica, what’s that?” I squint to see what she’s holding. “W-what were you going to do with Dave’s gun?” I stutter.

“Just thinking about how easy it would be to just end it all.”

“Erica, don’t do it. We need you.”

“Relax.” She says and rises from her chair. “I’m no coward. I’ll see you all through this.” She hands David’s gun to me. “Give it back to him.” Erica says as she walks out of the room. I stop her.

“Erica, wait. There’s something I have to tell you. That baby… it wasn’t-“

“Bit?” Erica finishes my sentence. I want to ask her how she knows, but before I can answer she continues: “Friend of mine, got hit by military friendly fire. Twice in the chest. A medic tried to reanimate her, but it was too late. Five minutes later, she stood back up and, ironically, killed the soldier who shot her.”

“Damn, I’m sorry. B-but why didn’t you tell us?”

“Have you taken a good look at this group? You were all way too sheltered from the outside world to survive on your own. What do you think would’ve happened if I told everyone they are all already infected?”

“They’d probably lose hope.” I sigh. “Let’s keep this between the two of us, shall we?”

Erica nods.“Let’s.”

After a good breakfast we drive over to the grocery’s to load everything into the van. Even after what happened last night, we’re all happily chatting about this and that while we’re loading up the van. I think we’re all just trying to forget it even happened.

I smile, but I can’t keep my mind off the whole “we’re all infected”-thing. Shit, if someone in our group were to get shot in the chest like Erica’s friend, we’d have to destroy the head and explain to the others why. Ted’s a fragile, old man. I don’t think his heart could take it. David’s too emotionally driven, more courage than sense. He’d probably put his gun to his head and get it over with.  Kevin? I don’t know how Kevin would react. He hasn’t said much the entire week we’ve been out here. He never even talked much back at the supermarket. Maybe he’d be able to handle it, seeing as he has dealt with his brother’s illness for a very long time now.

“Can’t fit anymore in there, miss.” Ted says as he wipes off his forehead.

“Maybe we need a second car.” I suggest.

“No, it’sbetter this way. More cars just means more fuel and more stops. Let’s just-“ Erica suddenly stops talking. She lifts her head in the air. “Do you hear that?” Everyone else goes completely quiet. I hear it too, it sounds like a moving vehicle not too far away from our location.

Erica tells us all to quickly go back in the store and hide. I hide behind the counter. The car sounds really close right now, and it’s slowing down. The car squeaks as it comes to a full stop. I hear a door open and close. I peek over the counter. The car’s a military jeep.

“It’s just one woman.” I whisper to David, who’s hiding next to me. He takes a look, too.

“She’s gonna steal our food!” David gets up and runs towards the woman with his gun drawn.“That’s ours, you bitch! Stay away!” He aims his gun at her.

“Goddamnit.” I get up from behind the counter and after David. When I get outside I see the woman has drawn an M16 on David and he’s shaking like a straw. The woman’swearing a military uniform. She wears her black hair in a bun.

“Tell your boy to drop his gun or I’ll open fire.” She says while holding David in her sights.

“Shit, Dave. Just drop it.” I plead him.

“Dave, listen to me.” The woman’s voice is calm, yet strangely forceful. “I don’t mean you any harm, but if you don’t put that gun down now, you don’t leave me any other option!”

“This is useless, Dave.” Erica came out of the store, too. She grabs David’s gun by the barrel and pushes it down. She then quickly snatches it away from him. The woman also lowers her rifle.

“Let’s star tover. Come on out, guys!” She says as Ted and Kevin also come outside. “My name’s Erica. You mind telling us who you are?”

“First Lieutenant Garder. But I suppose that rank no longer applies. Just call me Ashley.”

Very good, am enjoying this. Definitely rough on the baby Z, and the disclosure everyone is infected. Will be curious to see if Ashley ties in with the group.
