It’s been a week since Erica shot Manny’s sister, and the people still do not trust us. I have a feeling they watch our house at night, and when walking down the street like I am now, people stare at me with distrust. It does not annoy me, strangely enough. I guess that with all the danger out there, you get used to a few judgmental stares.
Odis told us the community is split right now. A small part supports ‘our’ action, as they too found the girl to be a threat. I use the term our loosely, seeing as it was not the group’s idea to barge in there and kill the poor girl on the spot. Most think we’re bad people and stand firmly behind Manny. Another small portion of that group wants to kick us out, but so far our superior survival skills, and Odis’s good words, have prevented that.
I approach the gate. I climb up on the ladder and take a seat with Frank.
“Are they back yet?” I ask him. Yesterday a group left to scavenge, taking Odis’s place. Without Odis’s leadership, we would’ve been thrown out already.
“Naw.” Frank answers as he flicks a used up cigarette over the wall. “I don’t like Billy goin’ out there without Odis. He’s reliable, for a black guy.”
One of these days I’ll call him out on his racism. But I need him friendly towards us right now. He’s one of the few who supports Erica’s actions. “He didn’t go alone, did he?”
“Stevie is with him. Ya know, tall guy, black hair, thirty somethin’.”
Suddenly, machinegun fire resounds from a distance. I jump up. Frank tells me to relax. “Probably those crazy bastards who threatened us a couple of days before you guys came here. Sayin’ we had to give ‘em all our supplies and women. Full o’ hot air if you ask me.” Frank says as he lights up another cigarette. “They said ‘we got an army’, but they ain’t shown up yet.”
“You shouldn’t take those kind of threats lightly.” I respond as I sit back down.
“They ran as soon as I pointed my rifle at them.” Frank blows out some smoke. “Pussies.”
I hear Jeremy call my name. He’s gesturing me to come down.
“Odis wants to see us.” He says as we leave the gate.
“About what?” I ask.
Jeremy shrugs his shoulders. “I don’t know. But it’s important. Ash and Erica are already at his place.”
As we walk into Odis’s living room, he’s sitting in a large chair while his daughter sits on the railing. Erica and Ashley are sitting on a couch to his left, while Manny sits on a couch opposite of them, continuously watching Erica’s every move. There are a few men scattered around the living room as well. I’ve seen them around town before but I do not know their names.
Odis gets up and opens his arms. “Ah! Y’all are here! We got plenty ta discuss.”
“Can you finally tell us what this is all about?” A man says in the back of the room. He’s a big guy, about Jeremy’s size and has dark brown hair with a heavy stubble. He’s wearing an old, tattered tank top.
Odis closes his eyes and nods. He smiles reassuringly. “It’s ‘bout our water problem. We need to fix it.”
“How?” Manny asks, not letting Erica out of his sights.
“There’s a water company ‘bout a day away from here. We got gas fo’ our cars now, too.” Odis explains. “I say, we go ‘n’ get it runnin’.”
The room fills with murmurring. No one is particularly excited to go out. Odis decides to calm his people down.
“People, people.” He begins. “If you don’ want to go, you don’go. This ain’t no dictatorship. But this needs to be done.” Odis pauses for a moment and turns his attention to us. “I’m sorry, but you four ain’t got much of a choice.”
“Whaddaya mean?” Ashley asks.
“We had a meeting.” He says. “It was decided that if you don’do this, we have no use for you. And we will kick y’all out.”
Erica rises from the couch. “That ain’t half bad. We got a farm.”
“Lady.” Odis says firmly. “Same rules do not apply to you. You don’ do this, we will punish you. We will lock you up and never let you see the light o’ day anymore!”
Manny smirks as Erica quickly sits back down. She lets out a frustrated sigh. “Fine. What’s the plan?”
Odis clears his throat. “I assume the four o’ you are in.” Jeremy nods yes. “Good. My plan was to visit the ol’ trainyard. Last time I checked some shitheads were hangin’ round there, but not too many. We all set up camp there and from there continue on to the water company. Don’ worry, I got a map and know the way. Who else is in?”
Manny is the first to raise his hand. He says he wants to take care of his recently orphaned nephew, and that he doesn’t trust Erica one bit. He claims to be keeping an eye on her. The big guy wearing the tank top steps forward. “Sure, I’m game.”
Odis looks around the room. “Just me, Manny and Rick? Aight. We’re leavin’ tomorrow mornin’.”

I visit this forum quite often but I never registered because I just enjoy reading what others have to say. Well, that ends today.
I just wanted to drop in and tell you that I've been keeping myself pleasantly entertained with your work. I tell you, it is a godsend for any 'Walking Dead' fan who's waiting for the show's return this fall.
I don't think anyone's criticized you for your work or tried to influence the story, but just in case anyone does let me just tell you that I come here for your writing and not for someone else's idea of a good story. I think many of your fans would agree with my sentiments.
Thanks 'That Guy', I'll drop in time to time to say hello.

It’s early in the morning. We already drove Ashley’s jeep out to the gate. Rick is on his way to get his pick-up truck. A small crowd gathered to say goodbye. Manny has kneeled down before Esteban, who’s crying. Manny gets back up and hugs the blonde woman standing by them. After he lets go she picks Esteban up. I assume she’s going to take care of him while Manny’s gone.
“I don’ want you ta go, dad!” Vanessa says as she hugs her father. Odis reassures her by saying he’s done this countless times before.
I see Brenda walking up to me. “Uhm, take this.” She says nervously as she hands me a brown paper bag. I ask her what’s in it.
“M-Medical supplies.” She stutters. I smile and thank her.
Rick pulls up in his pick-up. He honks the horn. Moron. Ashley immediatly yells at him to “never fuckin’ do that again” or she’ll “kick his fuckin’ nuts up his throat”. Rick laughs about it and jokingly asks Ashley to be his passenger. Ashley flips him off in response.
Erica and Manny join Rick in his truck. There’s only room for two in the truck, so Erica has to sit in the open air in the back. The rest of us take a seat in Ashley’s jeep and we’re off once again, back into the hell we once used to call our home.
Odis has the area mapped out well. Now I know why he went out so much. He didn’t only go out scavenging the other town, but he also went throughout Macon looking for the best route to the water company. Thanks to his map, it’s a smooth run. A walker here and there, but not too many. Rick even runs over a couple on purpose, which greatly annoys Ashley.
Somewhere in the afternoon, Odis tells Ashley to pull up near an old bookstore for a break. Ashley signals Rick to stop by flashing both tail lights.
Rick jumps out of the pick-up and loudly slams the door shut. He looks around.
“Shit, couple of creeps right there!” He says and pulls out his gun. He fires and misses the walker completely, hitting the building behind it. Its once hanging head immediatly snaps up. It takes one fast look at Rick before stumbling to the group.
“You fuckin' retard!!” Ashley yells at him and snatches his gun away. “Sound is what attracts them. Don’t you know anything?!”
Before Rick can respond, Ashley unsheathes her combat knife and gestures me with her head to take them out. I nod back to her and grab my tire iron from the back seat. Haven’t had to use this in a while.
Ashley whistles to grab the walker who Rick shot at’s attention. She grabs the back of its head thrusts her knife deep into the walker’s eye socket. The other walker keeps coming for me. I wait for the right moment until it’s only a couple of feet away and swing my tire iron at its head with both hands, in a backhanded motion. It drops down but it’s not dead yet. I raise my hands above my head and smash down. With one strike I crack open its skull, spilling its brain matter on the asphalt.
Ashley turns back to Rick, her neck still covered in blood. “Thanks, asshole. You just fucked up our break! Back on the road everyone!”
It’s already dark when we reach the trainyard. Rick and Jeremy stay with the cars while the rest of us go explore the train yard. Erica took two flares out of the back of the jeep with her. She explains that she found them during her and Erica’s scouting mission.
The trainyard seems safe after about half an hour of exploring it. We met five walkers in total, nothing we couldn’t handle. We turn right at a T-junction of train wagons and the light of Manny’s flashlight reveals a giant mob of walkers, all standing idly by barely making a sound. They immediatly notice us.
“Holy shit, run!” Manny yells.
I run back to the left side of the T-junction with Ashley but I notice the rest running back the way we came. I scream at them to stick together but it’s too late. The group of walkers splits up into two. One part chases me and Ashley and the rest follows the others.
“Go! I’ll cover you!” Ashley commands me and readies her M16. She opens fire. I run on ahead. The farther we get, however, the more walkers we bump into.
I draw my pistol but before I can fire, Ashley pulls me by my shirt and tells me to climb up on one of the wagons. I put my foot on an open window and grab its roof so I can simultaneously pull and push myself up.
I make it on the wagon and reach out for Ashley. She grabs my hand and I pull her up with all my strenght, desperately trying not to accidentally let her go or fall off. I manage to pull her up in time but the walkers have already completely surrounded us. There’s no getting off this thing.
“The flare!” Ashley says to herself and grabs the flaregun. She fires it up into the sky, lighting the night a bright red. “And now we hope for the best.”
It feels like we spent hours on top of that wagon. With walkers constantly reaching out for us, moaning loudly. But it seems that rescue is close. A vehicle sounds in the distance. After a while I can see the headlights getting closer. The only strange thing is the fact that it’s coming from the opposite direction from where our group is supposed to be.
The mystery vehicles appears to be a heavily armored jeep. Whoever is in it runs over the walkers surrounding us. It gets to a halt and a group of four men burst out of the jeep, equipped with M16s and auto shotguns. Who are these people?

The strangers decimate the walkers, blowing their heads completely off with their shotguns and taking the ones out at long range with their M16s.
“Whooow!” One of them yells, holding his shotgun above his head. He looks at up at us. “You can come down now, pussies!”
Ashley and I jump down. I see the guy is not what I expected him to be. He’s a skinny black guy with a buzz cut. He is, however, armed to the teeth wearing what seems to be an M4 carbine on his back and quite a few grenades on his belt. He sees Ashley and slyly approaches her.
“Look at what we got here, boys. Fresh meat.” He laughs and the other guys laugh along with him. He licks his lips. “What ya doin’ with this faggot, baby?”
Ashley glares angrily at him. “And here I was about to thank you for savin’ us.”
“You can still do that, baby.” He says and grabs Ashley’s face by her chin. Ashley immediately grabs his arm, sweeps his leg which causes him to fall. She keeps a tight grip on his arm while holding it behind its back. I can just feel the tension.
“Ya talk to me like that one more time, or try that again, and I will snap your fuckin’ arms like a goddamn twig!”
I expect his buddies to retaliate, but instead they start laughing at him. A white bald guy cracks a joke about how “skinny niggers can’t fight”. Apparently these guys like extremely racist humor, as the others start laughing even harder.
Ashley lets the little guy go. He gets back up with his head down in shame. “Fuckin’ bitch.”
Ashley gets closer to him. “Excuse me, lil’ man?” He flinches at Ashley’s threat. Needless to say, his pals find this very amusing.
I thank them for helping us out, but there are others from our group who need our help. The bald white guy steps up. “Friends of yours, eh? If they’re anything like you, you’ll fit right in. Whaddaya say we find them and you can stay with our group. We’re big an’ it’s safer than staying here.”
Now that I can get a closer look at the guy, I see he has a swastika tattooed on his neck. And I thought Frank was bad. “I guess we can stay the night.”
“Hmm.” He responds. “You gotta be somewhere? You holed up some place with others?”
I think for a moment and look at Ashley. She responds for me. “Ain’t none of your damn business. We stay the night. Where we goin’ after that is our business.” She says sternly. The guy smiles amusedly and shrugs.
“Name’s Josh. Our negro ‘friend’ is Dwayne. Two guys behind me are Dante and Sly. Short for Sylvester. Ya know, like the actor.”
“Fuck you.” The guy wearing a baseball cap says as he punches Josh in the shoulder. I assume that’s Sly. Just like the actor, he’s one ugly motherfucker. I guess that explains his nickname.
Josh laughs and signals us to come with him. Josh takes gets behind the wheel of their armored jeep. He tells Ashley to sit next to him so she can lead him to the others. I take a seat behind Ashley, next to Dante. His hair is a very light blond and his eyes are clear blue. He doesn’t seem as violent as the guys he’s with. He hasn’t said a word yet and has a calm vibe about him. Another clue is the fact that Sly and Dwayne actually take a seat up on the car’s roof, since there’s no more room inside.
On the way back we see plenty of dead walkers all over the place. Back at where we entered the train yard I notice they left Rick’s pick-up. They must’ve left in a hurry. Josh stops and Dwayne and Sly jump off the jeep and take the pick-up. Josh asks jokingly if we don’t mind.
All of a sudden, in the distance the sky lights up red. Ashley deducts that it has to them, firing their flare gun. Josh punches the pedal to the floor and we speed off towards the red light.
As we approach the flare, the sound of gunshots becomes more and more audible. They’ve got to be in trouble for them to be emptying their weapons. The gunshots are really loud now and the jeep is in sight. It’s surrounded by walkers with the others huddled up on top of the jeep. Jeremy and Manny see us and immediately call for assistance.
Josh abides and steps out of the car, M16 in hand. He fires from the hip. His accuracy is amazing. He doesn’t miss a single headshot. I step out too and see that Dwayne also got out of Rick’s pick-up, wildly firing his shotgun. He’s a lot less accurate than Josh is, mostly hitting walkers in the chest area.
I join the fray. Shooting got a lot easier for me. After I dispatch seven walkers I notice there are none left alive, so to speak.
Odis excitedly jumps off the jeep and approaches Josh, thanking him. He backs down when he notices Josh’s swastika tattoo.
“Now that,” Rick says, “ was awesome!”
Dwayne seems to have noticed Erica and walks up to her. “Two fine bitches in one night!” He says. Erica immediately pushes the barrel of her gun against his forehead. Dwayne lets out a high pitched scream. The barrel must’ve been smoking hot from all that shooting.
Josh and Sly laugh at him when he turns around, revealing a little circle on the middle of his forehead. Dante breaks the laughter up.
“We should go back. Place has been compromised.” He says coldly.
Josh looks over his shoulder. “Holy shit, the mute can talk!” Sly laughs stupidly at Josh’s remark.
“He’s right, though.” Ashley says. “Guys, get in the car. Josh will lead the way to his camp. No time to explain.”
Posted 17 June 2012 - 01:23 PM
Josh and his pals took us to their camp. And what a camp it is. They are camping out in the open. They have numerous armored jeeps and even a huge truck and a school bus, which have all been modificated.
They must be here with at least forty people, all of which are men. Everytime we pass, they glance over to Erica and Ashley and laugh at eachother. I do not feel safe here.
Josh is taking us to their leader’s place before we can go about our business. After some time we approach a large tent. I assume that’s where their leader lives. Josh yells by the door that there are some guests. A voice coming from inside tells him to let them in.
As we enter the tent, the first thing I notice is the space and temperature. It seems that while the normal guys have to warm themselves at the fire outside, their leader just stays in what basically is a house.
At the back of the room, a man with long black hair is standing there. He looks like he is evaluating us.
“You say you found ‘em in the train yard?” He asks Josh.
“Yes, sir. The one in the military suit there even put Dwayne in his place.” He says as he gestures toward Ashley. “Damn near broke his arm!” Thinking back about that incident seems to still entertain him.
The boss smirks. “I like you, ma’am. You got fire. Where’s the rest of your unit?”
“I don’t think that’s any of your business. Sir.” Ashley responds while looking the guy firmly in the eyes.
He claps his hands and laughs. “You got balls, lady. I’ll give you that. I assume your unit’s dead, then. I know what it feels like to lose men serving under you. I used to be a sergeant before this, you know.”
“Is this going somewhere?” Jeremy interrupts.
The boss shifts his attention to him. “I’m always suspicious about newcomers. What were you doing at the old train yard? What could possibly be of use for you there? Were you goin’ some place else?”
“Just passing through.” Jeremy answers.
The boss looks thoughtfully. He lets out a short ‘hmm’. He rubs his chin for a while with one hand while he holds the other behind his back. “Fine.” He finally says. “Stay here for the night. But you are leaving tomorrow morning. I don’t trust you.”
We prepare to turn around before the boss stops us.
“Not so fast, y’all. Hand over those guns if you want to stay here.”
“Not a chance.” Erica replies.
The boss chuckles. “Your guns, or else it’s out alone in the dark with y’all.”
“If that’s what it takes.” Jeremy answers, relucantly as he puts ol’ Rusty on the ground. We follow his lead, putting our guns on the ground. The boss thanks us for our cooperation. Josh holds the tent flaps open for us. He tells us to take a seat near one of the campfires. The boss still warns us not to “snoop around”.
We take a seat near the least occupied campfire. I don’t want to spend a lot of time around these people, and neither does the rest of our group.
“I don’ know ‘bout this, guys.” Odis whispers, carefully. “These people don’ seem friendly. Where are the women? The kids? This ain’t right.”
“They’re armed to the teeth with military gear, aswell.” Jeremy adds softly. “But those guys that saved us, they didn’t seem to military trained.”
“Shit, you guys are suspicious.” Rick says loudly. Ashley slaps him on the back of the head and shushes him. “You gonna get us in trouble, moron!”
“I know one thing.” Manny says. “I will be glad once-“ Manny goes quiet as he nods to behind us. Looking over my shoulder I see Dwayne and a couple of others approaching our fire.
“‘Sup, faggots. Beer?” He says as he sits down next to Rick, on the opposite side of the fire from me.
“Sure.” Rick answers. Dwayne hands him a bottle. “Where’d you get this?”
“After searching very hard.” Dwayne laughs. The others who are with him laugh along. Maybe I’m not in on the joke.
“Can I have one too?” Jeremy asks.
Dwayne grabs another bottle out of the crate and tosses it over the fire to Jeremy. Jeremy catches it without any stumbling.
Sly approaches and loosely taps Dwayne on the shoulder with the back of his hand. He asks him if he’s up for some more fun. Dwayne declines, saying “maybe later, we got enough fo’ all.” Sly nods and dumbly laughs while he walks off to a tent maybe fifty feet away.
He opens the tent door, which seems to be made of steel. Strange, considering all the other tents just have flaps to serve as doors. A woman screams as Sly drags her out. So that’s the role of the women in this community. Odis is visually disturbed.
I am, however even more disturbed by the fact that I seem to recognize the woman. I am sure I’ve seen her before, but never known her personally. Then it finally hits me. She was at the supermarket. How the hell did she get here?
I decide to play along with Dwayne’s tough guy act. “She looks fine. Where’d you get her?” I ask. Odis looks at me with wide eyes. I try to make it clear I don’t mean it by winking at him, making him even more confused.
“Fuck yeah, she fine!” Dwayne exclaims and naturally his cronies laugh about it. “Found ‘er at some other supermarket.” Jeremy’s eyes grow wide and his expression blank. The bottle of beer starts to shake in his hand. “Supermarket? Where?” He asks.
“Somewhere near the road, middle of fuckin’ nowhere.” Dwayne says after he takes a sip from his beer.
“She couldn’t have been the only hot bitch you found there.” I state, trying to lure Dwayne into admitting what I’m already sure they did.
“It wasn’t much. There was this hot blonde woman, but she had these two kids that wouldn’t shut the fuck up. We go to shut them up, the bitch don’t shut the fuck up.” He takes a large sip from his beer. “Women. So we just threw her on the fire and killed those lil’ fuckers.”
I am shocked at how casual he tells us of murdering a mother and her kids. As Jeremy gets up, clenching his drink in one hand and nervously rubbing the other together, I realize who Dwayne is talking about.
Jeremy now stands behind Dwayne, who is still none the wiser. “Sounds like you did quite a number on them.” Jeremy says with a slight tremble in his voice.
“Shit yeah, you should’ve-“ Before Dwayne can finish his sentence, Jeremy smashes him over the head with the beer bottle, which shatters on impact.
“That was my fuckin’ family!” Jeremy snaps. He grabs the still dazed Dwayne by the neck and throws his upper body in the fire. He holds him down by pressing him down with one foot. Dwayne screams and flails all his limbs around as he is burned alive.
“Burn, sick fuck! Burn!”
Eventually a couple of Dwayne’s buddies tackle Jeremy. Ashley comes to his aid and throws one of the attackers off of him. Jeremy overpowers the other, steals the guy’s knife and slits his throat after a slight struggle.
The fight caused a commotion, men storming to us, armed and ready. The boss makes his way through the the crowd of rowdy, angry men ready to flay us alive. He laughs sickly when he discovers Dwayne’s corpse still burning in the fire.
“So much for hospitality.” He jokes. “You know the drill, boys. Take the women, kill the men. Slowly.” The boss orders a couple of his cronies to restrain Erica and Ashley. Two men lay their hands on Erica’s shoulder. Erica kicks back to the guy on her right, hitting him square in the crotch. Before the other one can as much raise his hand, she reaches in her back pocket and smoothly takes out a hidden switchblade. She swings it swiftly at the guy and stabs him in the throat. He gurgles while holding on to his bleeding neck.
Jeremy uses this distraction to try and take out the two men holding Ashley captive. He picks up the broken bottle and slashes it on one of the henchmen’s face. Ashley takes out the other one herself by throwing him over her shoulder, right into the campfire on top of Dwayne’s body.
“Run! Save yourselves!” Jeremy orders us. I take his advice and just run like the wind. Not too long after the boss screams “Kill them all!” And gunfire sounds. They’re no longer trying to play a game with us anymore. I look back and see the guy who got his face slashed has got Jeremy in a chokehold while three others mercilessly beat him wherever they can. I want to turn back, but someone tugs my arm.
“Come on, come on! We gotta go!” Rick yells as he firmly tugs away at my arm. I follow him. I tell him to run for the woods, it’s our best chance. I can’t see where the others are. I think I saw Erica run off alone, while Ashley took Odis and Manny under her wing and took off in the opposite direction of us. Wherever they went, I can’t see them anymore. I don’t have the time to worry about it either, the psychos soon open fire up on me and Rick.
I can hear the bullets fly all around us, impacting in the ground, whistling while they pass me. I look back, trying to get an idea how far ahead of them we are when Rick’s knee just explodes. Blood and bone fly out of it and he drops on the ground, screaming.
“Please, help me!” He screams.
I stop and prepare to go back for him, but something stops me. I guess it’s instinct, but something tells me not to go back. It tells me that if I do that, I am dead as well. Even if I manage to get him up on his feet, he will still slow me down significantly. I can’t risk it. I can’t.
“I’m so sorry, man! I’m so sorry!” I yell back and turn back around, running away from the camp and Rick. He curses my name as I flee.
I’ve reached the woods. Still no sight of the others. Gunfire still sounds back at the camp, so I can safely assume we’re not all safe yet. Panicked thoughts race through my head. What if I am the only one who made it? What do I do then? Back to the farm, or back to the community to warn them? How could I just leave-
“Do you see him!?” I recognize that redneck voice anywhere. Josh has come looking for me, with company. I continue on running, frantically looking around for any sign of them. I can’t see anyone. It’s way too dark and they must know these woods.
I cannot see where I am going and I am not aware of my surroundings at all. I bump into someone. Someone who smells like decomposing flesh. It doesn’t take long for me to figure out what I bumped in to.
The walker reaches out for me and forces me against a try while furiously snapping at me. I manage to break my left hand free and grab the side of its head. I use my whole bodyweight to push the walker to the side. I slam its head against the tree, which seems to daze it for a bit. I position my self behind it, grabbing the back of its head now and pushing its head as hard as possible against the tree. I hit it hard enough to cause it to fall to the ground, but it’s still moving and groaning. I grab a large nearby stick and bring it down on it. I finally crack its skull after maybe five, six hits. I lost count.
As I try to run away again, I run face first into a fist. There’s a crack echoes through my head, coming from my nose.
I open my eyes and see Josh and Dante standing over me. “You ain’t getting away this time, pathetic fuck!” Josh taunts me. He takes a small pocket knife out of his breast pocket. “I think I’ma start with the eyes, first!”
I close my eyes, as I always do. I did it when Ashley killed David, and now I close them when I am about to die a horrific death. Kind of ironic.
Just like with David, I hear someone fire a gun closeby and the sound of a body hitting the forest floor. I open my eyes and see Dante standing over Josh’s body.
“Racist prick.” He says coolly. “I’m no bad man.” He offers me his hand. I accept it, but I still remain cautious around him. “These guys were protection to me, nothing more. They do stuff, you don’t want to know.”
“Oh, I know.” I reply. “You could’ve stopped them from butchering the people in the supermarket, if you’re such a saint!” My voice sounds extremely nasal. My broken nose must be obstructing it.
“And do what? They don’t like softies over there.” He glares at my nose. “Let me help you with that.” He says and puts index finger and thumb on it. He wiggles it around. I scream loudly. It hurts like a bitch. “That should do it.” He says after my nose cracks into place. I inhale deeply through my nose.
“Just trust me. There’s a road nearby. We should follow it out of here.” Dante stops talking for a while after hearing a branch snap. After he concludes there’s no one around, he continues: “These guys are not a smart bunch. By the time they decide to check the roads we will be long gone.”
I decide to trust Dante. If this were a trick, he would not have shot his buddy just to capture me. He guides me through the woods and we reach the road in no time.
“What am I going to do now?” I ask myself out loud.
Dante looks at me. He looks as if he understands what I’m going through. “You got a place to go?” He asks.
“A farm… But I don’t know if the guy staying there is still alive.” I pause for a moment. “The community in Macon, I suppose. Was that your group who harassed them?” Dante nods in response, not keeping his eyes off the road.
“Do you think the boss knows where we’re from?”
“I don’t know.” He shrugs. “He might suspect it. You should warn the people there. Tell them to run while they still can. Maybe to that farm of yours.”
I agree with him, saying that it’s for the best. A moment later I hear a car approaching. I look back and see a car off in the distance, but its lights are off. Dante takes the hunting rifle he had slung over his shoulder and takes aim, but lowers it after a while.
“It’s not one of us.” He says. “It’s a woman driving.”
The car stops in front of us. A familiar woman figure steps out of it. I have to squint to see who it is in the darkness of night.
“Who’s this?” She asks.
“Holy shit, Erica? How the hell did you make it over here?” I ask. I am both surprised and disappointed at who it is.
“I hotwired the car. Are we the only ones who made it?”
I sigh. “Seems like it.” I take a moment to fix my posture. “Uhm, this is Dante. He saved my life.”
“He’s one of them. He’s not coming with us.” She says and pulls a gun on Dante. She must’ve gotten that from the camp. If she’s one thing, she’s resourceful.
“Whoah, don’t! He shot one of them to save me, those guys won’t take him back!”
“What’s stopping him from telling his buddies you killed him? I can’t take that chance, I’m sorry.”
Dante raises his hands in surrender. “Ma’am, I am going to put my gun on the ground and kick it over to you, okay? I have no mallicious intent.” He slowly bends through his knees and places the gun on the ground while holding his hands in surrender. He stands back up and kicks it over to Erica.
Erica walks back to the car and retrieves something from it. It’s a long piece of rope.
“Fine, come with us. But you are coming with us tied up. I still don’t trust you.” Dante complies with Erica’s proposal, saying that it’s a very reasonable compromise.
After tying Dante’s hands and feet, we take off before the walkers catch wind of the firefight. Finally in the car, I let my emotions loose. I cry for what I did to Rick, for what happened to Jeremy and for what is no doubt going to happen to him. I lay down in the length of the backseat and just bury my face in my hands. All I can do now is hope the rest made it. It’s all anyone can do.

“Where are you taking us?” Dante asks Erica to break the silence.
“Back to the farm, where it’s safe.” Erica replies coolly.
“But there are people who need your help. They already know about the community in Macon, they’ve already been there.”
Erica sighs in frustration. “I don’t fucking care.”
Dante looks back to me. His eyes ask me to help him. I strike my hands through my hair and puff before opening my mouth to say something.
“Erica, please.” I beg her. “You saw what they did at the supermarket. We can’t let that happen again.”
Erica stops the car and turns to face me from the driver’s seat. “We sure as shit can! This is about survival, and you know it.”
I grind my teeth to refrain from just lashing out at her. “I know what this is about. This isn’t about survival, it’s about you being a selfish bitch! Dave was right, you’d do anything to save your own ass!”
Erica chuckles before rolling her eyes. “I thought we were past this shit. Even you should see what the world has come to. Everything I did, I did for myself and this group, it was all necessary!”
“You-“ Before I can finish my sentence I am startled by the sound of gunfire and bullets bouncing off of the armored jeep. We all quickly duck down as to not get shot through the windows.
“Fuck!” Erica yells. “They found us!”
A couple more bullets impact on the vehicles before one hits the window, loudly shattering it on top of me. I cover the back of my head with my hands.
“Untie me!” Dante yells to Erica. “I know how they work! I can help you take ‘em on!”
Erica is reluctant to do so, but after another bullet impacts and shatters the window above her, she takes out her pocket knife and cuts Dante’s restraints. “I’m watching you! No funny business!”
Dante nods. He says the gunfire seems to be coming from the left side of the vehicle. He exits the vehicle on the right and takes cover behind it. He signals me to come out as well and orders me to bring his hunting rifle.
I do as he asks of me. Dante rests the hunting rifle on the hood of the car. He fires, cocks the rifle back and fires again. Before he can cock it back a second time, someone snuck up from behind and whacked him over the head with a large branch. I turn around and see another guy standing behind me, holding a baseball bat above his head, ready to bring it down on me.
He swings it down at me. All I can do is cover my face and scream out “Holy shit!”. My assailant abruptly stops mid swing when I yell.
“Is that you?” He asks. I recognize his Spanish accent. It’s Manny. He frantically waves his arms in the air. “Stop shooting! It’s them!”
A figure steps out of the woods, holding what seems like an M4 Carbine. “Shit. I thought you was one o’ them!”
“Aw man, sorry fo’ hitting you over the head, son! I didn’ know who you were, you coulda been a bad guy for all I know!” Odis apologizes to Dante as he helps him get back up. Dante tells him he’s used to worse pain after traveling with those psychopaths.
Erica exits on the driver’s side. “Good to see ya, ‘Rica.” Ashley smiles.
“You scared the shit outta me.” Erica sounds angry.
“Fuck, don’ be mad at me now.” Ashley replies. “But whatever.” She glances over to Dante. “This boy took a couple o’ shots at me. Can we trust ‘im?”
I defend Dante. “He saved my life by killing Josh. And he wanted to save my life a second time just now. We can trust him.”
“I’ll take yer word for it.” Ashley replies. “My name’s Ashley, by the way.”
“Dante. Nice to meet you.” He says as he rubs the back of his head, which causes Odis to apologize again.
“Wait.” Manny says. “Where’s Rick? Did he make it?”
I look down and shake my head. “He got shot.” I answer quietly. I don’t want to tell them what really happened, and getting shot is as close to the truth as I am willing to get.
Ashley looks around. “Jeremy?”
“Nope.” Erica says calmly.
Ashley tightens the grip on her gun as she hangs her head and sighs. She quickly regains herself, though. “We was goin’ to the farm to rest, then back to Macon.”
“Farm sounds great.” Erica says before anyone can answer. “But I ain’t going back to Macon. What you guys do is your own business, just know that they’ll be coming for you. But they don’t know about the farm.”
Ashley sighs angrily. It’s almost a growl. “You are comin’ with us to Macon. We need fighters. We need you.”
Ashley pushes Erica against the car. “I got enough of yer shit! You will help these people, or I will not hesitate ta leave ya here!” It’s always fun to see Erica get put in her place.
Growling and moaning resounds from the woods. The walkers that heard the gunfire are here. I tell everyone to get in the car and leave. Ashley takes the wheel and we speed off back to the farm. Let’s just hope we are not too late.

This hiatus is going to go by a lot faster for me now that you are writing again. You've got me hooked.
So please continue to feed my addiction. You're a consistently good writer and this chapter is no different. I enjoyed the friendly fire aspect. I also look forward to learning more about Dante's character. The mention of the loss of Jeremy made me a bit misty eyed, he was one of my favorite characters. I look forward to seeing what happens to the group and what direction you decide to take the story in.

Goldstein was surprised to see us coming after all those weeks. He was quite shocked after we told him what happened and he immediately offered us some food and to stay the night. Of course, we took him up on his offer. Not like I slept all that well. Again.
In the morning, Goldstein even offered us breakfast in the form of fresh vegetables. Apparently, he managed to grow crops. When I asked him about this, he admitted they just started sprouting out of the ground and he watered them.
We depart for Macon, leaving Goldstein alone once again. This time to look after the farm and prepare it for its new inhabitants. If everything goes according to plan, this shouldn’t even take a full day. We go to the community, evacuate the people and get back to the farm as soon as possible. But when have things ever gone according to plan?
The ride to Macon can’t go fast enough for me, for anyone. Every minute we spend on the road is another minute those psychos have to figure out where we’re from. When we finally arrive, we’re immediately greeted by Frank pointing his rifle at the jeep.
“Don’t come any closer, weirdoes!” He threatens while cocking back his rifle. “I told y’all if I see you here again I’d blow your head off!”
Odis slowly steps out of the car. “Don’ shoot, Frank! ‘Tis me!”
Frank quickly lowers his weapon in surprise. “The fuck, Odis? What you doin’ in that car? Ah, fuck it. Bill, gimme a hand here!” He says as he signals Bill with his head to help him. They go down the ladder and I hear a familiar creaking noise. They’re opening the gate for us. Ashley doesn’t even wait until it’s fully opened to enter.
We get out. Bill remarks that we are missing some people. Odis regretfully informs him that we lost Rick and Jeremy.
“And who the hell are you?” Bill asks as he points to Dante.
“Dante. I used to roll with the people who got your friends. And now you are all in danger.”
“Dad, what he mean by that?” Vanessa asks from out of the crowd that gathered around us.
For the first time, Odis seems speechless. He scratches the back of his hands and isn’t able to utter anything but a very long “uhm”.
“He means that there might be a group of bloodthirsty psychos on the way!” Manny says as he picks up Esteban. “They could be here any moment!”
“What, you mean those pussies who threatened us, couple o’ weeks ago? “ Frank remarks.
“Exactly.” Dante answers. He turns to address the crowd. “They were part of a larger group. The only reason they never came back with an army is because the boss considered taking over this town a ‘waste o’ bullets, for the time being’.”
There’s murmuring coming from the crowd. I can make out various whispers. “Can we trust him?” “Where should we go?” “How does he know?” Dante seemed to have picked up on that one.
“I know because I used to roll with them. Make of that what you wish.”
There’s an almost synchronized gasp coming from the crowd, mainly from the women. People are getting rowdy now. They blame Odis for bringing in a dangerous man who might be working for the other group. Odis tries to calm his people down but to no avail. Some even try to make their way to Dante, to do God knows what with him. We try to hold the angry mob off the best we can. They are pushing against us hard, but Dante doesn’t seem to be afraid of them. Maybe he sees this as punishment for his crimes with his old friends. Or maybe he is used to worse.
The crowd goes silent and stops pushing. The shot came from behind the gate. No one dares to get up the ramp to see what’s going on.
“Sorry to interrupt, but is there someone I can talk to ‘ere?” A voice amplified from a megaphone says.
Odis walks up to the gate. He signs me and Dante to come with him. Ashley follows us as well. Once on the gate, there’s five of the psychos waiting for us, amongst others the boss holding a megaphone in his left hand and a colt .45 in the other, Sly training an assault rifle on us and the guy who got his face slashed.
Sly becomes enraged when he spots Dante. “You motherfucker, I’da blow your traitor head off right now!”
“Sly…” The boss says calmly, “would you be so kind as to unload the goods?”
Sly growls as he lowers his weapon and walks over to the van.
The boss continues: “I’d like to parley, if you would allow me?”
“What’s there ta talk ‘bout?” Odis replies.
The boss chuckles menacingly. “For one, the fate of your two palls ‘ere! “ He stretches his arms like a magician who shows the result of his trick. Sly approaches behind him, holding Rick and Jeremy, bound by the arms and legs, by the collar. He drops them in front of the boss on the ground and pulls them to their knees.
“Now, you want to parley or should I just put a bullet in their heads right here and now?” He smiles. I’ve never seen anyone revel in anything as much as this guy revels in someone else’s pain.
“Jerry, no…” Ashley whispers. She sounds desperate. She raises her rifle at the boss. “Don’t ya hurt ‘em, goddamnit!”
Swiftly, the others train their weapons on her. The boss wags his finger. “Tsk, tsk. That’s no way to negotiate. Now, be a good girl and hand over that Carbine you stole from us.”
The boss’s grin disappears into a frown. He puts his colt .45 against Rick’s head.
Rick starts sniveling. “No! You promised! I told you everything you-“
Rick’s lifeless body slumps over head first to the ground. Odis is repulsed and Ashley lowers her weapon. I can’t believe he shot a man, a living man so casually. Dante didn’t even flinch. He’s used to this.
The boss now puts the colt against Jeremy’s head. “I am done playing."

“I don’t give a fuck if I die!” Jeremy utters defiant, yet weakly.
The boss looks down on him and smiles. “Son, there are worse fates than death.” He looks back up again at Odis. “So, are we in business?”
Odis looks over to Dante. He shakes his head. Odis hesitates for a while before reluctantly answering “fine”. Dante sighs and crosses his arms. He obviously does not want to negotiate.
“What I want, is very simple. I’ll spare your buddy ‘ere, if y’all surrender everything to us.”
“Whaddaya mean by ‘everything’?” Odis asks, suspiciously.
“Food, guns, housing.” He shrugs. “Your people could be of use to us, too.”
“Don’t do it. You know what they do to the women.” Dante warns Odis. Odis looks at him desperately, then over to me and Ashley.
“I promise I won’t hurt anyone.” The boss replies after hearing Dante’s warning. “You’ve already given us everything, I wouldn’t dare to take anything else from you. Hand to God.” He says and removes the gun from Jeremy’s head to raise his hand up in the air.
Odis looks back at Dante again. “I-I can’t risk the safety of these people! I have ta take-“
“You do not take that deal!” Dante brashly interrupts him. “He’ll torture and kill the men and children and the women will become sex slaves! For God’s sake, man. He just killed someone in cold blood!”
“Last chance!” The boss responds. “You take this deal or this boy dies.”
I look over to Ashley. She’s breathing heavily and barely keeping it together. I whisper to her that even though it pains me, there is no other way. If we want to survive, Jeremy has to die. All I get in return is an angry glare.
Odis looks back over to Dante one last time. Dante shakes his head again. “No deal. I can’t trust y’all to keep yo promise.” Odis says and takes the ladder down.
The boss sighs in frustration. He puts the gun back against Jeremy’s head.
“Pull the trigger! I don’t give a fuck!” Jeremy is still as defiant as ever.
The boss smiles. “You know what?” He says as he signals for his cronies. “Get him back on his feet!” Sly and the slashed face guy come over and grab Jeremy under his shoulders to get him back up. The boss points his gun down at Jeremy feet and pulls the trigger. The bullet impacts on Jeremy’s right foot. Blood spurts out of the wound.
The boss hold the colt by the barrel and smashes it on Jeremy’s nose. The two holding him up let go of him and Jeremy falls to the ground.
The boss turns back to the community. “Every day you don’t take this deal, he’ll get some more o’ this! And I promise: this was just the tip of the iceberg.” Sly and the other guy pick Jeremy back up and drag him into the van.
“Is there a place we can all gather and discuss this issue without them hearing it?” Dante asks Odis quietly once we are off the gate.
“Y-yeah… Come wit’ me.” Odis sounds distraught over what just happened. Can you blame the guy?
As I and the rest of the community are following Odis, I take the opportunity to talk to Ashley.
“Ash, you all right?” I ask her.
She swiftly turns her head in my direction. She looks pissed. “Don’ talk to me!” She lashes out at me. “You wanted ta let that bastard kill Jeremy!”
“Well, not because I want him dead! I want the others safe!” I retort. I’m kind of in disbelief that she, of all people, doesn’t see the necessity of that choice.
Ashley comes to a hold. So do I. “I coulda taken the shot!”
“No, you couldn’t! There were four other guys with assault rifles, they would’ve killed you!” I take a moment to gather my thoughts. “Listen, I know Jeremy has a thing for you, and maybe so do you for him. But you can’t become reckless when it comes to him. Needs of the many-“
“-Outweigh the needs of the few.” She sighs. “Yeah, I saw the movie, too. Fuck, ya are right. I wasn’t thinkin’. Stop me next time, mkay?”
I nod and we enter the building Odis brought the others. It’s a large building that easily fits the entire community. It seems like they removed all furniture, this was most likely meant to be some sort of community center.
The crowd gathers inside, waiting for someone to start the discussion. Odis takes it upon him.
“Everyone, everyone!” He begins. “I ain’t gonna lie. We are in some deep shit.”
“That we are.” Dante responds as he positions himself to the right of Odis. “There may be only five of them outside of the gate, but I know how they work. They’ve got this place surrounded. At least forty of them. All heavily armed. We have no choice but fight.”
“We do have a choice!” The blonde woman who took care of Esteban yells from the crowd. “The guy offered us a chance to surrender. Let’s surrender!” Many in the crowd seem to agree with her. Nodding and generally approving of her suggestion.
“Wouldn’t trust the guy.” Erica says as she steps out of the crowd. “We are survivors from one of their raids. Do you know what they did to those who surrendered? The raped them, tortured them and burned them alive!” I never expected Erica to be the noble one.
You can just feel the excitement for the surrender option drop. A man from the crowd asks what we should do, seeing as they are all civilians.
Dante has an answer for him. “Ashley and I could help you prepare. I know their ways and Ashley is ex-military. I’ve been told that you have weapons, let’s use ‘em. Are you down for this, Ashley?”
Ashley joins Dante in front of the crowd. “Fuck yeah.”
