The police station isn't fortified, and there is no room to grow crops.

The station is in Kentucky in the comic. In the TV series it is in a small town in Georgia.
In fact it can't be more than a 3-4 hour unobstructed drive from Atlanta since nothing in Georgia is more than 3-4 hours from Atlanta.
It would not be a safe place compared to the prison.

I wouldn't go anywhere near the military. The last time I saw the military, they were shooting doctors and nurses. No Fort Bening for me. I think the prison would be a good idea if it weren't for that damn Governor.
That is a solid point about the military. We saw them kill everyone in cold blood and to be honest i couldn`t think a reasonable explanation for this. But going to a prison would be an awful idea .Who would want his child and wife in a place ,with criminals running things?
Only if they had no other solution it would be logical for me to find safety in a prison .A logical safe zone would be a place with plenty of resourses somewhere far away from a city into the wild.. Gather up some guns, some ammo and tools and go" wild"...

The warehouse/superstore/Walmart theme is a reoccurring theme with ZED fans of all ilks. Yes. If you can get there early on and fortify it enough to prevent other HUMANS from getting in, this would make sense. especially in a walmart... they have guns there. and tons of food... garden products (including soil, seed, and kiddie pools, for a roof garden) you would just shit over the side of the roof when you had to go... just fortify all the doors, and ride it out. you could even rig up some of the various solar panels, batteries, and gas generators in order to get some power here and there.
I used to have dreams/nightmares about getting stuck in a walmart during a zombie apocalypse (this is way before zombies were cool... like in the 80s). i always thought to myself that I could hide on the top row of an aisle if the zombies actually got inside. but in my dreams, i was always alone and would always sleep in one of the tents in a camping display. some scary shiz for a kid to dream about... but i guess zombie fan-ism is just in my blood...

I can certainly see it being a smart choice to try and hold and fortify, but I think it would be contested pretty often by rival groups who really want crates of Easy Mac.
And yeah -- like tewkewl says, the Wal-Mart would be even worse because it has practical items like guns and tools. I imagine the guns would go pretty quickly during a ZA, but there's all sorts of useful things in there that a group would be hard-pressed to pass up.
