Hi, I'm new here however I have been reading for a while. I know it's already been established that the group is going to the prison for season 3, but I was thinking earlier what about the station Rick got all the guns from? It had running water (when he takes a shower there and tells Morgan they have their own pump) and most likely more guns/ammo lying around somewhere. How far away is the farm from the station?

I'm not quite sure where the farm is located, it could be somewhere in the outskirts of Atlanta. But the police station I believe is in Cynthiana, Kentucky, and according to google maps, that's about a 6 hour drive (could be longer depending on road blocks and conditions)

They were headed to Fort Benning which is south west of Atlanta about an hour and half away. So they were somewhere in between. Ricks home Town in Kentucky being about 7-8 hours away.

Also do you guys agree that the station could be a possible safe zone?

No.
The police station isn't fortified, and there is no room to grow crops.

I don't think it would be a great safe place, as Maka said there isn't anywhere to farm, and even if there was it would be hard to fortify the area. Also, I don't think it would be sustainable for a bigger group? And it was quite overrun by walkers anyway, and as it its fenced off they'd easily re invade. The prision is a much more viable option as its blocked off, they can clear any walkers inside and lock any new walkers out.

And Island near Cali... beautiful weather for crops.. big enough to raise livestock great place to catch fish and crabs and once you clear the island of zombies, you never have to worry about being over run. Imagine being in a picnic eating steak and lobster outside and not a zombie in sight. It might make the series a little boring though.. would be like watching little house on the prairie. The most exciting thing to happen might be Carl asking Pa for rock candy....lol

I wouldn't go anywhere near the military. The last time I saw the military, they were shooting doctors and nurses. No Fort Bening for me. I think the prison would be a good idea if it weren't for that damn Governor.

It's all daft. Daft like buggery, innit?

That's a good point. I just think they've gotten so far away that it's pointless to go back now. They're pretty much nomads.

The station is in Kentucky in the comic. In the TV series it is in a small town in Georgia.
In fact it can't be more than a 3-4 hour unobstructed drive from Atlanta since nothing in Georgia is more than 3-4 hours from Atlanta.
It would not be a safe place compared to the prison.
For a reasonable fee, I will quell minor outbreaks, enforce quarantines, and dispatch infected relatives.

Will they ever return in the future? Do they ever return in the comics? I think it could be fortified and they could scavenge for supplies

Maybe that was Bill Murray's mansion in the background and not a prison..

That is a solid point about the military. We saw them kill everyone in cold blood and to be honest i couldn`t think a reasonable explanation for this. But going to a prison would be an awful idea .Who would want his child and wife in a place ,with criminals running things?
Only if they had no other solution it would be logical for me to find safety in a prison .A logical safe zone would be a place with plenty of resourses somewhere far away from a city into the wild.. Gather up some guns, some ammo and tools and go" wild"...

For the group, the station would be a bad place ... for reasons others have covered. If you're a lone survivor who happens to be stuck in that town, though? Jackpot. I can see one or two people holing up well enough in a place like that if they had to. It's probably one of the safer "local" places simply due to it having a generator, guns, a fence, and running water. I'd still try to find a rural area, though, personally. More trees = less zombies. Well, moooost of the time.

How about a big grocery store like Costco. These places have plenty of food, and usually only two entrances to worry about. The back loading dock usually has steel doors and can be a great place to park an escape vehicles. Its also a great place to off load things you find on scavenging trips and if you reinforce the front glass doors you will be set. The top of the building is flat and big enough to start a good size rooftop garden. Its also a great place to enjoy the sun. Once you have the place secured you can start expanding your areas of control by temporarily using large vehicles (buses, 18 wheelers, RVs, etc...) to quickly build a perimeter wall then put up chain linked fences behind it at your leisure. You just repeat this process to keep expanding your territory. Costco also has their own gas stations and a shop for working on cars. This is where i would go if i can't find an island.

The warehouse/superstore/Walmart theme is a reoccurring theme with ZED fans of all ilks. Yes. If you can get there early on and fortify it enough to prevent other HUMANS from getting in, this would make sense. especially in a walmart... they have guns there. and tons of food... garden products (including soil, seed, and kiddie pools, for a roof garden) you would just shit over the side of the roof when you had to go... just fortify all the doors, and ride it out. you could even rig up some of the various solar panels, batteries, and gas generators in order to get some power here and there.
I used to have dreams/nightmares about getting stuck in a walmart during a zombie apocalypse (this is way before zombies were cool... like in the 80s). i always thought to myself that I could hide on the top row of an aisle if the zombies actually got inside. but in my dreams, i was always alone and would always sleep in one of the tents in a camping display. some scary shiz for a kid to dream about... but i guess zombie fan-ism is just in my blood...

The biggest issue I see with the warehouse store is that other people are going to want to get in really badly. It's a place that any survivor nearby will try to get into to scavenge supplies, because they know that even if it's been looted thoroughly there's probably still some Spam and diet Shasta hidden somewhere back there.
I can certainly see it being a smart choice to try and hold and fortify, but I think it would be contested pretty often by rival groups who really want crates of Easy Mac.
And yeah -- like tewkewl says, the Wal-Mart would be even worse because it has practical items like guns and tools. I imagine the guns would go pretty quickly during a ZA, but there's all sorts of useful things in there that a group would be hard-pressed to pass up.
