The general consensus from threads titled "where do you want to be during the ZA?" is "not a city."  That's super, except that 82% of us live in or near cities.  So, with that in mind, what city would you most like to be in?

I myself am leaning towards my current place of residence, Washington DC.  Here is my reasoning:

1) At a tipping point, there will be pressure to bomb highly infected cities.  You don't want to live in a city that gets bombed.  My guess is that a government acting not in a strictly utilitarian manner will place a high emphasis on keeping DC not bombed.  There is a serious morale issue with nuking the capital.

2) Guns, and people who can use them WELL.  Every city has guns, but DC has a LOT of people who can use them very well.  Considering the billion branches of police (metro, DC, park, capital, etc.), the US Marshals, the secret service, and the FBI, we're doing OK for short term infection control.

Add in the fact that northern Virginia and southern MD are full of air force and army bases and there is the ability to immediately increase the number of trained armed personnel in DC.

What are your thoughts? What do you think about DC...what do you think about other cities?

I think being on a boat would be a great place to stay. You could cruise the east coast and get supplies as needed. The city is way to risky IMO. Not just zombies but live people. I know when the last big hurricane  hit us in south Florida and you had to line up and wait 4-5 hours for gas people were getting a bit nuts. And that was only a few days with no power. Add weeks of no power and zombies.... I'd get far away from people.

If I ha to choose a city I'd go with one with a small population and one that had extreme winters. I figure the cold would slow the zombies a bit.

Hi Misery,

I definitely agree that cities are less than ideal.  I'm not sure if a city with extreme winters is the best though.  While my knowledge of the agricultural landscape of the US is poor, are states with extreme withers good growing states? VA and MD provides pretty good farm land.

I'm in the Baltimore area and totally agree with your choice and your reasoning. Add to the police and military presence in these urban areas the amount of semi-rural suburbs in close proximity and we're doing alright. Honestly, Baltimore is rampant with illegal firearms and people that know how to use them. I fear it's not the geeks that'll be the problem but the looting and raiding that is sure to take place.

Hi Anarchist,

I have the same concerns regarding riots and looters.  I wonder how quick DC would be to declare martial law.  It has higher than average ratio of commuters to residents -- meaning that once the stuff hits the fan and we stop going to our office jobs the population of DC shrinks by quite a bit.  I'm expecting them to blow the bridges over the Anacostia river almost immediately , and probably over the Patomic if things get bad enough.  I'm not sure what a good northern defense point is.  So much of 495 has high stone sound barriers that it's tempting to hold there, but not quite enough of it does.

Right... remember the opening to Zombieland? Even the President couldn't escape it.

I've thought about my own home city of Chattanooga, TN... it's small less than a quarter mil in population and the mountainous terrain would make it idea to find homes snuggled up in the woods out of the way, but close enough to town to get supplies. Plus (sorry) lots and lots of caves around to hide out in and store supplies.

Alot of cities are surrounded by water ways so most could be fortified and held the problem is one of population . luckily i live out in the sticks no cities for me to worry about

There are nice fortress like buildings in the 20 mile radius of my city, most of them on an elevated position(mountain) so I would probably head for one of them.

I would have to say any city that has multiple ports. nothing mainland. at least with the ports you know you're getting escaping into an area that you're not going to run into any surprises. maybe even some of the cities up on the great lakes, since it doesn't necessarily have to be the ocean.

Aye but those of us who live in Gods Own Country ™ and those benighted chaps and ladies who live in (gasp) Europe, Asia, Australasia and Africa are all on the outside looking in.

Still, I'm going to hijack yo' thread and post about Gods Own Country* ™ and where I live.

I live in the most northerly city in England and, it's on the coast, it's 6 miles from where I am to the sea, to countryside, large hills and, best of all, some rather excellent examples of castles, many of which are in a good condition and with some little work could be made quite defensible.

*This is as opposed to Gods Own County ™ which as you all know is Yorkshire.

I live in one of the four main cities of New Zealand with a population of roughly 120,000 - practically a village to those of you in the states.  Saying that, I feel the biggest threat in a ZA would not be the zombies so much as the surviving people.  I'd try and get a small group of survivours together and then sail to Stewart Island (off the very bottom of NZ).  Once there, we'd clear the island of the infected and re- establish civilization.

If I HAD to be in a city, it would be my current city:  Boise.  Not large enough (I think) to be bombed.  We have a LOT of armed folks running around - might get a bit hairy for awhile, but I'd hole up and defend the house until the initial panic wore off.  I can be out of town and into the mountains in 20 minutes - that would be driving really, really fast and taking the back way.  If I HAve to be in a city when it all falls apart, I want it to be a city I can get out of quickly.

Key west might be good since the tip of the Florida peninsula is surrounded on three sides by ocean. Use bulldozers, earth movers and building crews to erect a barrier across the land. Have boats lined up at the shoreline for a speedy escape in case of a serious breach. Love the St. Augustine idea but I bet several hundred thousand other people might think of that place also, too many people to fit into the fort.

Shane, agree with you on Key West, other than building barriers, just blow the bridge. I am not a real big fan of Z's walking underwater, but i could be wrong.

I would like to be in Brunswick/St Simons Ga

It's has the largest federal training site  in the nation. They all train their plus its right on the coast so their is many boats and docks along with farm land just west of the city.  I'm in Atlanta so getting their would be just hours away  and very fortified and has many many many weapons.

I think people living in cities are SOL.  Most would never make it out of the city and die in traffic jams from violence and dehydration. Piles of bodies surrounding the more prepared survivors fortifications outside the city would be a deterrent to sheltering in available buildings. It would be a mess along any interstate..

Ive been lurkin here for quite a while, but i figure his place is a good place to start.
I live in chicago, and as much as i plan out, i think myself and everyone i know would be screwed. I imagine i would try to hunker down as long as possible since the panic would be unimaginable. I pass thousands of people every day. I figure my best bet would be to hunker down with my people, try to get some more of us together, im sure we would have some people try to pillage us. More people around here than you would think, do not own a gun, nor do they ever even consider survival in that way. I suppose if we survive all of that, the best bet would be to get to the lake but im sure sooo many people would have tried that. I think rich people would be tryin to get choppers to their buildings.(a lot of sky scraper apartment complexes that are full of very rich people) now my dad lives about a 100 miles from here in a very small hunting community, where he has a genuine army vehicle, other trucks, some guns and water and other survival supplies, while most of his surrounding communty have the same things, so if i made it long enough i would be torn between the lake, and gunning it for his place. That argument would probably depend on my group if i had one. Also, unless we came upon a very self sufficient leader-like person, not to mention someone you can trust, i would probably be making decisions, because as i said, people around here really have no idea about survival. Its fun to think about, but wouldn't be a good time.

I'd head out to Suffield, Alberta, Canada. Not a city but next to the city of Medicine Hat. It has a joint British and Canadian military base. Lots of supplies and ammo if need be, fortified, I gaurentee the area would make home to a large amount of survivors.
Spoiler

Zombies are the reason the Red Cross came up with hands only CPR.
