GPS use satelites, and I have explained several times how reliable that would be in a situation where no one is monitoring their orbit. People minotor and correct the orbit of satelites at all times, to ensure they do not deteriorate, do not crash into anything or each other, and are constantly in position to be of use to devices on the ground. IE. a GPS device. I say 'internet' because it passes along to the satelite in a somewhat similar fashion, and that's easier for me to explain with.

But to move forward, without people monitoring satellites, it wouldn't take long for them to drft out of orbit. Now I am not saying it would be drastic, but even a matter of a few feet offcourse in the sky could lead to the directions being miles off on your GPS. One satellite just a bit out of orbit would make it completely and utterly useless. If you want to risk that, then alright. I might not be the greatest expert on technology ever, but this much I know from talking with a professional about. Come a global emergency where no one is regulating courses, you'd be better off with a paper map.

What you have, essentially, is a very fancy map with no tracking function. Useful if you have no other map, but not really worth using.

A GPS does not connect to the internet. Because it is essentially a passive tracking device (meaning that only a GPS can initiate being 'tracked', so as to protect your privacy), it has to receive signals from a satellite.

That was in the post you quoted, and you essentially repeated it like you didn't see what I wrote. The reason why I replied to you about the towers wasn't because I was arguing anything about satellites (as I mentioned before, I know nothing about them) but because you mentioned internet. I'm a computer science major and a complete geek. My curriculum doesn't really cover network infrastructure, but I have taking networking classes before and I know the basics. I replied because you said connecting to the internet requires some sort of tower, which I know not to be true.

I saw what you wrote, I was just explaining why a GPS wouldn't work. I don't really care what you major in, you're arguing over details like how details transmit, when the entire grid system would be rendered completely useless. Who cares if it goes through the internet, through towers, or through unicorn magic if the satellites drift five feet off course and it says Rick Grimes is in the middle of the Gulf of Mexico?

What good would a GPS unit be? You are in the middle of hell and not knowing where to go. Is some device going to get you out of it?  It is interesting to read people's ideas on how they would keep devices charged up and operational in a zombie apocalypse.
It would be the end of technology and your cellphone, GPS and laptop would be door stops and paperweights.  You might as well be on mars for all that stuff is going to do for you.

We weren't really discussing the benefits of bringing a GPS. I had hypothesized that should some vestige of technology remained that it would be pretty nifty if people could manipulate the maps to show safe zones versus infected. It was just a hypothesis, not something that would actually be possible.

I'm not getting snippy, maybe my tone is a bit dry, but not snippy. But you're right, I don't really want to argue. Your choice what to bring in a zombie apocalypse. I think they are pretty silly, though.

Just don't waste the car battery too much. It could be an entire generation before anyone is making more car batteries... Or mining for oil, for that matter.

I'm glad it was a misunderstanding. I am enjoying the discussion in this thread and I wouldn't want any tension developing over it.

As for what I would bring...well, there's a lot of things people would probably bring with them that would be silly. Mostly because of sentimental value. Like I mentioned in my above post, I'm a tech geek, so the items with sentimental value for me *would* be my cell phone and computer. I guess you could compare it to a kid bringing a teddy bear; even if my cell phone and computer were useless, having them would  bring some comfort to me.

I wasn't arguing. Please don't take it that way, especially since I thought we had both come to an understanding. The reason I mentioned my major was because you credited a source (satellite engineer) and I felt it would be courteous to back up my own claims with a source just so it wouldn't seem as if I was talking out of anger and not prior knowledge.

As I said, I'm not saying the internet will be up and running, or that satellites will function. Call me nitpicky if you'd like, but I was honestly just replying to the issue about towers for the sake of discussion. It's what I'm interested in. Even if we were talking about something completely different and the subject of computers or the internet came up, I would have talked about it.

I said internet. I meant Satellite. Both would be useless in that kind of a situation, so I don't see the point in obsessing over the detail of how it works, when it just wouldn't.

I know nothing about computers, and frankly care little to. Technology hates me ((I have crashed a computer by hitting enter before, CDs have exploded when I step into the room, and have blown up a stove trying to plug it in. Laugh, it is sad but true.)) so I stay as FAR from it as possible. I'm a more of a writer, and the only reason I know about the use of satellites in a post apocalyptic setting is I had asked a friend about it. I might get the termonology and basic functions mixed up, at least until I do more reading into the subject, but the main point of what I was  saying remains. A GPS would be more liable to get survivors lost than to help them find their way because of satellite drift, the internet would be impossible to reach, and really anything that relied on either of the above would just be a burden.

If we're agreeing with each other then why did we just go back and forth over those last couple of posts? =P

Because I need the opportunity to bitch over insignificant details like a lunatic? Why the hell would I be online otherwise?

would like to point a few things  out.

The goverment made the internet for a nuclear warfare situtation.

it was built to survive nukes going off everywhere around the world and the goverment has had that same mentalty since.

there in a time of emergency will be internet still running there are random goverment run areas with towers or satlites ect that cwould beam the internet.

not to mention the phone system inwitch the internet is baised on will always be avalable even when storms nock out power the phones still work its because f a last ditch effort to always ensure connections between people.

some places might not have wifi but they still will have internet.

+1 to undeadhero because he's exactly correct...

The internet was designed for apocalyptic scenarios, ie aftermath of nuclear war. The whole point is to be able to hard wire into a phone line to attempt communication be it power or not. I like how everyone just skipped over this post!

Believe it or not, the internet serves more of a purpose than just being for bloggers and porn. Lol
