Favorite Zombie Theories - How did it all start?

Romero had just kept it simple, you die - you're a zombie. The simplicity is what drew me to zombies in the first place, unlike vampires, werewolves and Frankenstein who are complex and that have some religious undertones. Zombies are just the walking dead with the goal of mindless destruction and the eradication of humanity.
The pandemic outbreak scenario is a interesting theory as well because the infected could be cured somehow. This scenario gives you hope that you may be able to find a cure your wife and child (maybe even your mother in law) instead of mutilating their brain.
Feel free to conversate. You can also add how you became a fan of zombies if ya want.

First movie I've ever seen with zombies is probably The Omega Man, with Charlton Heston. If they don't count as zombies, then Dawn of the Dead.

But i do agree with the bio weapon gone wrong, i hope its not cause that seems to be a newage zombie cliche but i have a feeling thats what happend.

The Omega Man was based on the book "I Am Legend" in which case they are actually supposed to be vampires... both movies sort of missed the mark on that story. If you get a chance to read the graphic novel based on the book i highly recommend it!

I'm on the fence. I kinda like the dead rising from the grave for no apparent reason. Or as Romero put it "When there's no more room in Hell the dead will walk the earth". Sort of a punishment on mankind. I guess this would religious overtones to some degree since you would have to accept "evil" as being real.
But...I also like the virus idea. A bio-weapon out of control is probably my favorite. Although I would accept a whoopsie! in the chem lab.
Why do I like zombies..hmmmmm. Well, I like all sorts of monsters. Zombies are among my favorites. I guess it has to do with how relentless they are. They have no plan, no fear, only a desire to feed. And they just keep coming until destroyed. You can't reason with them or negotiate like you can with some monsters. Zombies don't wanna hear none of that. They just wanna chomp ya. I guess I also kinda like the fact that a normal human has a CHANCE against these guys unless he's completely surrounded. Hell, even then you MIGHT be able to make it. With some monsters you're just cooked as soon as they spot ya. Unless you're lucky enough to be the Super Tough Guy/Gal of the movie who can not be killed by any means known to man or beast. And they look groovy :D

The Omega Man was an intense film; The mutants did have kind of a zombie feel to them. The Night of the Comet scenario would definitely be an interesting take on the zombie apocalypse. I just watched this movie a few days ago, and though it was cheesy like you said, I enjoyed it for what it was - 80's style.

Dead Alive was incredibly cheesy in a good way and hilarious. Good theory. Skull Island, poisonous monkeys from hell turning folks into zombies - what's not to love about this. We could even look forward to an appearance from zombie King Kong, that would be one destructive zombie ape.

Imagine trying to convince a zombie not to bite you - it aint gonna happen. Ha!
You could look the zombie right in the eye and say look mr. dead guy or whatever I got leukemia, pemphigus vulgaris, syphilis and meningitis. I'm a dead man already and my skin and blood are toxic so you still gonna bite me? Zombie responds with argg Chomp. Any other monster would probably pussy out but not a zombie. Imagine ole fangs or the hairball hearing this after stalking down his food...
I like the fact that people with normal skills might have a chance against them too because it would give civilians hope to beat an unreal situation.

Seriously, whatever it is, it is attracted to and uses the nervous system, maybe its a bio-mechanical organism? The nervous system is analogous to a electrical system. The organism, first shuts down the wetware, then reboots the hard drive "the brain", and basically rides your meat suit to its next victim. This would explain why medical science would be impotent in the face of its spread. Also why massive vascular damage or bodily damage isn't important. The only question is what mechanism it uses to create energy for the locomotion of the body? Sorry for the long post.

Interesting hypothesis with the bio-mechanical bug. Perhaps Nanites? Microscopic mechanical devices that enter the bloodstream and invade the brain to destroy higher functions. Hmmm.

YouTube - Kitteh vs. The Rat
THE RAT IS INFECTED by toxoplasma gondii its being forced to run and put itself directly in harms way so the disease can enter more hosts. Everyone thinks its cute, but it causes me to freak out. Because rats are similiar enough to humans we use them for first stage medical experiments. And this is NOT BS, its a actual fact.

We know from what Jennings told Rick that all survivors are infected, so it must have been airborne if it is indeed a physical infection. So ...... some deranged fool who wants to live forever experiments in his garage with ways to make humans immortal and instead unleashes the zombie plague into the atmosphere when he gets careless with those pesky spores.

some sort of bio weapon or self mutating viral infection designed to target a specific racial type of gene for the purposes of War (for example Chinese), very possible by their own govt, gets into society as a means of controlled experiment which goes slightly wrong, turns them into "28 days later" type Zombies and then spreads.
