My take on the scene is that we're seeing it from Rick's POV through most of the conversation between Rick and Shane and then after Rick kills Shane. We're still in Rick's POV when Carl arrives on the scene. Rick thinks Carl is pointing the gun at himself, so we do too. We discover when Carl pulls the trigger where the gun is pointed about the same time that Rick does.

The choppiness of the scene isn't about the amount of takes it took to do the scene. It's about making the scene move fast, creating tension, and making the viewer see and experience things as the director and film editor want him to. I didn't think it was sloppy at all. I think it created the right affects in viewer experience for the scene.

I think this man/woman is spot on. This is what I was trying to say... a month ago. Dang, it's already been a month?

Only 6 more to go... 6... :(

I don't think Carl was going to shoot Rick...

Spoiler

Also he starts talking a while after Rick stabbed Shane. If he saw how Rick killed Shane or had a clue he would've start talking earlier.

I think the producers were just trying to create some suspense in thinking he might kill Rick but we all knew he was going to end up shooting Shane. Shooting  a zombie directly in head then crying and holding on to his mommy the next episode, someone please get this kid off the show!!!

Do you think it would be more realistic for him to be a stone-cold emotionless killer, and just shrug off the news that his father just killed someone he was extremely close to?

After watching the episode again this morning I think he was drawing his gun out of fear not knowing if Rick was zombified or not.

Not to forget he shot that guy he was extremely close to after he just zombified. Even others couldn't shoot a zombie they knew that easy...

Let's make this subject short and simple.... Carl wasn't pointing the gun at his dad he had the gun pointed over his dad's left shoulder because he seen Shane on the ground moving before we and Rick did.

If he had it pointed at Rick then we would of seen him react a 2nd time by moving the gun again towards Shane to shoot him when he turned and Carl only had that gun pointed at one person and one person only and it was Shane!

Rick and Carl have another thing in common

1st Both had been shot

2nd They both each shot each others best friend after each of their best friends turned into a zombie
Rick kills zombie Sophia and Carl kills zombie Shane
