Thought of this while reviewing the Daryl-Carol meltdown scene. Remember the beginning of the scene when she almost bumped into his ear necklace
.
We have a lot of theories drifting around about the origin of the walker plague. Virus seems the most popular choice. Bacteria? We even have a fungus fan. Jenner said it was none of these things. Toxins, radiation, Wrath of God? I don't think the Wrath of God is contagious, but toxins and radiated materials are dangerous to touch.

What I'm getting at is why would Daryl wear a necklace of walker ears. OK, he was having the mother of all bad days, but he still has the necklace. So why would an intelligent, if admittedly unschooled, man like Daryl do such a foolish thing?  For that matter why would the writers expect us to believe he would?

Well, honestly... Andrea got sprayed in the face with zombie blood when she killed the roamer in the RV. Daryl and T-Dog have had dead walkers on them to hide from live walkers. They have all been in contact, close contact with zombies. So whatever is going on, I hope they touch on that, cause if it were a virus, the survivors are awfully lucky.
It's all daft. Daft like buggery, innit?

people coming back from the dead seem like the wrath of god to me. in one way or the other.

plus the infection only spreads if your open wounds come in contact with zombie blood or saliva. so wearing the necklace isnt dangerous unless you put the ears in your mouth :o

I feel the same way. There's only so much protection you can take, but I would think any smart people in the group would be taking what protection they could at all times. Remember, Rick and Glenn were so careful not to get the guts in their eyes/mouth, but they all must have little nicks and scrapes on them by now. I wouldn't touch the infected even to carry them to be burned unless I had gloves on or used some type of protection. I mean, what if I have a small cut on my finger and some Z drool gets in?

I think Beth is somehow infected from too much close contact with them for too long. Maybe a bite causes the infection to spread quickly, but just a little contact, especially prolonged contact, might make it happen a little more slowly like with Beth.

Incorrect I may say Merle Dixon, temptation much to great for the average man to not put ear in your mouth and chew.

Actually, if you watch closely in the episode when Daryl gets the ear necklace when they take it off him ,before he gets shot, the necklace actually does go in his mouth for a second.

I bet you they would be right tasty with some fried okra and pickles.

BTW, if you have never eaten a fried pickle, you are truly missing out.  I am a yankee who got transplanted down here.  I didn't believe that a people could manage to come up with as many things to fry as southerners, but it is truly an art form.

I have no doubt that Daryl would embrace the tradition wholeheartedly!

Uuuuuhm, fried pickles.  Hey, I just had a thought.   Maybe Daryl is a Cajun.  I know for a fact they will eat absolutely anything that doesn't eat them first.  It fitsPosted Image.

Jenner at the CDC clearly stated it wasn't any of those causes, actually right before the wrath of god one, he was a doctor who had researched it, Andrea asked him if they knew what it was, and he clearly stated it wasn't Viral or fungal, ect, ect, which is when wrath of god got brought in.

Not sure why so many haven't heard this very very clear statement.

As such that is probably why Daryl isn't worried about the ears, the ear thing has been done throughout history.

Gold in a wrapper, my friend. I make six figures in only 6 months out of the year selling fried candy bars and other various fried foods here in the USA. People love the stuff, and it is pretty good. Try fried koolaid if you ever come across it.

He said it wasn't any of those things, but they do know that people get infected from bites. Something is transferred there. It would seem logical that 'something' in the fluid exchange is the cause, so it would make sense to be careful of ANY fluids from zombies at all. I'd be going with that theory over the "wrath of God" thinking since that's certainly not something I can protect myself against.

plenty of people who do not fully understand modes of transmission or sterile technique commonly misunderstand what they need to keep themselves safe from illness. one real-world example that comes to mind is unsafe sex, which is a carelessness bound to and fueled by the mentality that "i'm in control," usually resulting from one continually putting himself or herself at risk and coming out unscathed well against the odds. perhaps daryl has had enough direct walker contact that he can justify to himself that wearing ears won't cause him any trouble, when, in reality, he's putting himself in incredible danger. that being said, i would be incredibly disappointed if one of the coolest and most badass characters on the show is taken out by his own necklace of walker ears.

Ummm haven't they been throwing walker carcasses on eachother the whole time? I would think the ears could serve as a more stealthy function. But I mainly agree with the wicked trophy suggestion.

Those 2 walker security guards at the Public Works only had scratches on them. So unless they died of boredom, that does throw a wrench (pun intended) into things.

I may be wrong, but I don't think he has worn them since he first made it. And he was seriously out of it when he did make that necklace.

I feel he just keeps them as a reminder of his "journey" in the forest. That whole hallucination scene with his brother was crucial for the overall development of the Daryl that is with the group today. He battled his own demons and insecurities, and has become a better person for it. I just think he keeps it to remember who he is now and not who he thought he was or where he came from.

Or it just looks cool, and makes for good TV. IDK
