During the ZA - what would be you knives of choice? I was looking into a Ka-Bar or a Busse (like Daryl has).

Are all Busse knives like $300?

"I think knives are a good idea. Big, fuck-off shiny ones. Ones that look like they could skin a crocodile. Knives are good, because they don't make any noise, and the less noise they make, the more likely we are to use them. Shit 'em right up. Makes it look like we're serious. Guns for show, knives for a pro"

Agreed, got one beside my bed with my tomahawk right now.  The only problem I might have is enclosed spaces. Hallways, etc.  For those areas, and of course the ever popular thrust through a chain link fence, might I recommend something from Cold Steel's Tanto line.  That chisel point is just the thing for punching skulls.

By the way, where does U.K. law stand on pointy things?

Most of a kukri's weight is concentrated in the forward cutting edge. Unless you're talking about a Philippine barong or African panga The striking force that a kukri can deliver is many times that of a normal machete.

Don't care for the "Duh" remark either. I've been using edged weapons and firearms in real life situations for thirty years. So don't insinuate I'm stupid. It was unnecessary and childish.

I shall just continue with my Global kitchen knives thank you all, I've been using my main one for many years and am very efficient with it; it's well weighted and extremely attractive. It helps I haven't been using it to pierce tin cans in socks however, so I've managed to keep it extremely sharp.

I know, I know I haven't quite grasped the point of the thread... But I've no experience of hunting knives and if I can effectively skin fish or a rabbit with my current knife and cut through a swede with barely any force I'm unlikely (and too old) to start changing.

What your going for with the bladed object is decapitating ability and believe me a razor sharp machete swung horizontally will cut through a human neck with relative ease. That's why it seems like an obvious choice to me than any other knife. You have to think about it logically, while your knifes may very well be the ultimate zombie slaying edged weapon, is the average person going to be able to get one fairly quickly? No. A machete, they will be.

If I had to pick a knife having some its weight concentrated in its foward cutting edge it would be one below.
backwoodsroamer, have you seen this knife before?

See talk on how easy machete knives can be found and I agree.
I just have a fascination with squared off knives and would create my own lawn mower blade like below over a machete.

Yes, It's based on the Chinese great sword. Great for a slash, not so much on a thrust. The width at the point limits penetration. Everything is a compromise, few designs work well at both cut and thrust. The Roman Gladius Hispania is a good choice if you want both. They are very pricey if you want a good reproduction. The cheap ones are total crap. Decorative use only.

Forgot about you, sorry. Ka-bars are OK ,  just don't get crazy and try to pry on anything with one. The blade is too thin for that. Saw a guy break one off at the hilt doing that.

Busse, great knife, but overpriced in my opinion. If you don't mind paying for the name, go ahead. Unfortunately, the days of buying a good blade on the cheap are long gone. Posted Image Quality costs, but a good blade will last you a lifetime, and your kids can have it after you don't need it anymore. I may come off as kind of brusque, but I'm always glad to answer questions. I got smashed up pretty bad a while back, and Vicodin only does so much. Although a couple of shots of  Old Crow taken with the Vicodin do improve the effect. Posted Image Sometimes I'm kind of grumpy. Overlook that please.

By the way, I'm not an armchair commando. I've seen the elephant. If I haven't used the product myself or heard good things from those who have, I don't recommend it. If I don't know, I'll tell you. No BS

You can collect almost any knife and blade to have in your home, however carrying a knife in public is forbidden.

Am I wrong in thinking that you can have a blade if you have a (good) reason for it?

Out in public? if you're working as a carpenter and you're carrying a Stanley knife then yes. I don't think there's a law that forbids you from owning any blade as long as it stays in your home.

When you say knive I think of something smaller than a machette.  My choice would be the Cold Steel SRK.  I have not used it on a zombie but I have for field dressing an animal and I bet it would gut a person just as well.  The blade is heavy enough for stabbing through bone if you are strong enough and it has a decent guard to prevent you hand slipping.  If you are talking decapitation though it is not the tool for the job.

hmm we talking small hand held knife or a sword type weapon? I would chose a nice hardened steel dagger, 6-8" long. And I'd choose a nice high quality Katana.

Wouldn't decapitation leave a biting soccer ball on the ground?  If the question is what would you use to kill the undead, I would go with carrying a few ice picks.  Or even scratch alls or ground down screwdrivers.  They are cheap, plentiful, don't make noise.  The pointed edge, applied with force would do a good job scrambling the brains.  A nice 8" screwdriver.  Or a cold chisel with the hand grip on it, so your hand doesn't dlip down the shank.
