Just my 2 cents worth, but why not send a scouting party ahead to Ft Benning to see if it's still safe and operational and welcoming the uninfected?

From there I would assume it's only a 50 or so mile drive.

A journey by vehicle across zombie apocalypse Georgia, assuming you would need to navigate blocked highways etc would take max 1 and a half hours for the 50 mile ride/recon.

Please discuss.....

Plus, Ft Benning from Atlanta is only 110 miles.

I drove there last week, well to Columbus and it took me less than 2 hours, though the roads weren't heavily blocked by abandoned cars nor were there hordes of Zombies around.  Point is, it's only 110 miles!
Though.....

No gas stations, no know safe zones, i am going to guess an average speed of maybe 20 and that is a big maybe. the movies and tv lie you cannot hit a person size object at speed and just keep rolling your going to do damage that will at least slow ya down and prolly break your car. the route you choose is most likely not going to be the route you take thanks to blockages and MZB's that wanna take whats yours ( and yes a running car is gonna be a target to the bad guys) if they wanna send out scouts they need to double up on everything two vehicle two crews to sets of complete gear. because things will go wrong. and they have to be a prepared as possible.

Personally i would wonder , why if i am 50 miles away from a major military base have i not seen any evidence of them. where are there scouts and flyovers. if there still up and running they would be doing recon , why is there no evidence of this.

firestopr,
Glad somebody finally pointed out that hitting a human at speed usually results in a smashed radiator, corpse wedged under car, major damage, etc.  I imagine this would lead to walking with the walkers which could very quickly lead to being eaten alive.Posted Image

Most of the driving scenes have shown pretty much open roads, apart from the highway blocked but they still drove around it.
Gas wouldn't be much of a problem the first year, after that the gas in the tanks of cars will start to expire.
The army around Ft Benning would be out on a daily basis gathering supplies, gas, ammo etc and would have run into the farm.  So i'm assuming that Ft Benning has been over run or abandoned.
