I like Hershel.  Yeah, i disliked his attitude about Rick's people leaving the farm.  I disliked him keeping the geeks secret.  Each person reacts to the extreme conditions of the outbreak and destruction of the world differently.  He didn't handle it well.  And i think if the spoilers come true about Sophia, then i could dislike him a lot more.  But as it is now, he was fast acting when Carl got shot.  He was a leader and IS a leader with the people he is responsible for.  I hope that the TV show follows the comics and keep him as a part of "the group" of survivors.  We'll see what happens.  I just think he is responding emotionally rather than out of malice.

I just can't like this guy.     He seems like a mean old man, impatient and not compassionate.    On top of his delusional opinion on the walkers, which endangers his remaining family, I think that he is being very unrealistic about not needing Rick's group as much as they need him.      He's an old man with a cane, and he's going to be able to run a farm with a 17 yr old boy and 3 women?    He is going to need strong labor, and strong armed protection as well.     Walkers aren't going to be his old worry, and if their farm is just 2 miles off the only exit that you can use to get around the traffic jam, there will be more survivors stumbling onto his place (many of whom won't be nice guys like Rick).

Hershel as a character is unlikable to say the least. His only saving grace is his willingness and work to save Carl's life in spite of the fact that he is a veterinarian. Save the boy he did, thanks to efforts of Otis and Shane bringing him the equipment that he needed to do the job. He was allowing them to stay for as long as Rick's group crisis is done or about done, which it is.
His grief over his wife and family is going to be his undoing. Will he die or will he lose a daughter?

This week's episode hopefully will bring a satisfying conclusion to the Farm.

I like Hershel despite his stupid choices with the barn walkers. For instance, he's old. He didn't grow up like this, in the 21st century, so he might feel a bit backdated. His family members are in the barn. That's gotta be tough on him, especially since he's elderly and maybe wanted to end his life in peace. He's also got two daughters he worries about, and I'm guessing he thinks they'd be just as traumatized if he killed their step-mother and step-brother. He's also a very spiritual and religious man, who believes the walkers retain their souls. Even with a cure for them to come back to their old selves. Imagine how disgusting that would be, chunks taken out of them? Anyway, back to the original topic: I truly think Hershel is just misunderstood. You guys say he's a jerk for wanted the Atlanta Survivors gone, and that's fine, but I disagree. This is his property, and they're practically intruding and using all his resources as if he's the guest.

makes sense but what do you think about this......okay lets say dale kicks everyone out of the RV and says its my property and drives off with it... everyone in the show would call him a jerk and hate on him. which is virtualy the same thing hershcel is doing. yet people are justifying him. i just dont understand it

+1 to this. Herschell isn't a badguy persay. Reality has been turned on its head so of course he's grasping @ straws. He's hoping. With how I've seen people react to the farm & its people it comes across as if herschell & his people owe them something. They don't. Gunshot aside you don't come into someones saferoom & start barking orders.

Theres a big difference there. Dale has welcomed and even invited the group into the RV. He's grown close to most of the group. The group on the other hand, just sort of showed up on Hershell's farm suddenly. Not that they had much of a choice. But with people using up his supplies, taking his horses and people, and not respecting his rules, he absolutely has a right to ask the group to leave.

Dale can do that then. It's his property. I doubt he would, but if something happened and he wanted to go on his own, that's his decision to make. The group may hate him for it, but it's his property, like I said. If he wanted to take Carol's cruiser, that wouldn't be okay. I guess it's just my perspective.

You don't understand what I'm saying. I never said it would be alright for him to just leave, but if he did, that's his choice. So what, they'd still have Shane and Daryl and all them. But the situation with Hershel is a completely different subject. He's trying to keep the last people he has alive, and the Atlanta Survivors are jeopardizing that. He's worked hard for this and the Atlanta Survivors waltz right in and start acting as if this is their home, and then get butt-hurt when Hershel politely asks them to leave.

Also, they aren't really a team, and this is a piece of fiction, so I'd appreciate you leave my sense of teamwork out of this.

Herschel is doing what seems right to him. The Rick clan showed up to his party. If he has gotten by this far doing what he has, then throwing a new clan into the mix that is more rogue might mess that up. What good have they done so far for him? Team work goes for those that want it and this is a new world. " oh you like my safe haven farm? Well I am glad I have worked my whole life to provide it for you stranger. Shall I fluff your pillow? Would you like a mint? "

I think he has been more than hospitable. And guys like him, like me, don't like to be bothered with.

I voted awesome because he's an interesting, somewhat complex character... not because I'd want to hang out with him lol.

Now, I'd be the first to say that I probably wouldn't get on all that well with Herschel in real life; however, and most importantly he is a very good antagonist and therefore he is a fabulous character.

I do have to admit that I like the slow burn of this series; I also love the fact that being on Herschel's farm has allowed everyone to develop a certain sense of complacency that I have a feeling will be blown out of the water like a model-boating-enthusiast having his Graf Spee torpedoed by someone with a hand-grenade attached to a bar-of-soap.

Herschel is a zealot; zealots are dangerous; he's mistaken, he's firmly following a sinister path and taking along a group of people with him however he's also fundamentally decent, and overall he's flawed. This, I think makes for a good, if unsympathetic character.

Just think, had his wife remained by his side (rather than in the barn) and his family; and his brand of home-spun logic had been applied to the new characters who've turned up (Rick et Al) they'd have looked on him as a pious and studious man. Unfortunately, he's developed a rather warped view of 'reality'; he's got a barn full of walkers he hopes to cure. Therefore he's a bloody loony.

And that's always good to watch.

I have this theory, see. It's that the humans in WD are ALWAYS going to be more dangerous than a group of mindless buggers who want to eat their legs.

Agreed. Herschel saved the boy, gave them food, a respite and is now asking them to move on.Yes keeping walkers in the barn is crazy but it his HIS barn and property. The group should honor Herschel's request and go unless they've decide that property, rules and laws no longer have any meaning.

This is pretty much how I see it.

I saw some judge his age at 50 somthing, The guy is pushing 70 if he's a day and he is not mentally equipped for the world he is in.

I have a feeling you play a lot of Call of Duty.
