It's kinda lame how we're now halfway through this big "war" and the biggest death so far has belonged to an inanimate object.

Yeah, it's too bad they didn't save a few people from Alphas attack to kill now.

Also, father gabriels death was super lame.

Lucille easily makes it onto my list of top 15 favourite Walking Dead characters, she was a goddamned vampire bat, and i think it's a significant death. It speak volumes about Beta and it could be a good metaphor for what's to become of Neggy.

What's lame is that they could kill off half the main cast and i'd still care more about Lucy (excluding Carl, Negan, Michonne, Aaron, Hershel, and Sophia ofcourse).

to be fair, they could've killed off Lucille during any arc at any point in this series and it still would've been a bigger death than any other death that happens

Lucille is our leading lady forever and always

I'm pretty sure the fact that Negan said something about Beta's coat being "thick" is the official excuse for Beta walking it off. Sure, he didn't walk it off in this issue. But it's clear he'll be back before the war's over, even if they skip a week in the next two issues.

Negan was talking about his own thick coat. When Negan says that beta is too big to be that fast, beta slices one of his knives into Negan's coat and you can see it in the panel.

But I do agree with you that beta may come back before the war is over. The Whisperers will most likely fix betas back. Remember when they fixed up Ken's leg after it got all messed up?

Problem is that they cant possibly have any way of healing it. Splinting a leg is miles apart from treating back damage. If they were actual doctors and had equipment useable to treat him, that's one thing (would still take months if not years for him to be back at 100, but alas). They've got sticks. You cant scarecrow him and put a stick or something in his coat to make him stand. He'd need some kind of specialised rigging of some sort.

And....well, even if they were to come up with some odd way to keep him up, at best he'd move very sluggishly and with great exhaustion and pain.

What I'm getting at is he'd deliver a very underwhelming effort, fight-wise.

I stand firm by my wish for him to just be left behind like a wounded animal. Nothing would give of the same kind of ''fuck you'' ironic vibe for such an ''animal'' of a man. No big sendoff. Just him crying out for help as he's left behind.

It's also make more sense knowing most (all, really) TWD villains dont go out with a *BANG*. Governor died pathetically, the Hunters as well, and then we got Spencer...Gregory....Rose Family...and even Alpha. TWD isnt the type of show where bad people go out admirably or cool.

Instead they all die realizing either how little they really could control, or how their own actions led them there. They die cus karma demands it.

At best I'd want a face reveal before it, but that's about it.

And another thing, why didn't Negan just bash Beta's head in with Lucille like he does to everyone else? Instead he hits him repeatedly in the back?! Fucking lame man.

Beta missed big and when the swing came down had his back painted with a bigass bullseye. Back was closer than head, and a better way to knock him down rather than forward.

Spoiler

He was also in the moment, must be why he didnt realize Lucille must've been cracked or such before or midway into it.

And I figure he was venting some anger, and would've smashed his head as a finisher instead instead of killing him quickly.

Just my 50 cents.

I know I will take some heat for saying this but this whole arc has been very weak in my opinion.

Maybe I am just feeling some fatigue after reading this comic for 13 years but man it seem like the quality of the story is really slipping.

Agreed.

1. I've lots of baseball bats splinter in two or three pieces from hitting a ball weird but I've never seen a baseball bat just fall apart like Lucille did.

2. The whisperers suck as foes. Hell, I'd argue our heroes could have taken them out even easier than they have so far.

3. Don't care one iota about those douchers at the Kingdom.

Some observations though...

1. It's nice seeing Dwight develop into a cool leader character from the cuckolded patsy he was.

2. Negan is pretty much caring this story right now.

3. Rick can go at any time and wouldn't be missed.

4. Something needs to happen to really shake things up. It's been about 100 issues since they discovered Alexandria and the rebuilding society/fight foe/rebuild society deal has been stale for a while now. We desperately need a change of scenery.

the only problem wit the change of scenery is that ASZ has to stay standind so does hilltop. i keep saying the bigger threat is the "ohio" group. we still dk if that's where they actually are.

the kingdom i say will end predicted as in the current leader gets killed. the other guy takes over and fucks everything up. that how this story normally works.

We still have half of The Whisperer War arc and a lot could still happen. However, if this war ends up being mostly uneventful, then I won't be getting excited for the next war. I fear the war with The Governor may have forever set the bar way too high to be topped.

With 3 issues left and the fact they already spoiled the Hilltop burning, I just can't help but feel underwhelmed.

And yes I'm one of those people that will bitch about Betas unrealistic injury. The same way I bitched that Aaron survived by getting stabbed by a knife nearly as large as a sword. I get that it's a comic and not going to be entirely realistic (there's fucking zombies)...but these are supposed to be regular people trying to live not super humans.

It feels underwhelming enough to where I'm wondering if the Whisperers are only a distraction from a greater villain out there.

Well, there's no hard evidence that Beta will recover. For all we know, he may not make it, and the Whisperers will feel lost and do nothing post-war. After seeing how Beta was to that one curious Whisperer, they may as well join, right? Fuck what Lydia said, maybe not ALL of them have "no purpose". Surely one or several of the Whisperers want to live normally (or as normal as it was before the outbreak) with Alexandria or the other communities.

Also, maybe the Hilltop burning is a metaphor that the Hilltop is in mad flames with their Earl Sutton mixtapes crumbling due to some reason from the inside or what have you.

Some people need to remember that Robert Kirkman writes these books, and these covers don't always represent what happens in the interiors. And people's predictions are always wacky. People thought Carl was going to free Negan in Issue #127 because there were preview panels of Carl with a knife in his hand, him leaving Negan, and Andrea asking someone "How have you survived?" Same with Issue #113 where Rick was staring at the walls of Alexandria and people thought "Fuck! Durr's a hurrd!" What about when there was an assumption that the Whisperers were a biological nuclear accident-- wait, no that didn't happen. Ha.

What I'm getting at it is, Kirkman is a man of surprises and deceives us all. Remember Negan and Alpha? Great ploy.

As far as the covers go...an interpretive cover is one thing. For example issue 157, the first in the Whisperer war. It looked like people were shielding their eyes, Rick looked pissed, and Alpha was on the cover despite dying. The 161 cover is a different story. Now I hope the cover is a metaphor like you put it. Because it's absolutely fucking stupid to spoil such a major plot point on a future cover like that.

As far as the Whisperers being lame villains, I can see that. Alpha killing all those people made no sense to me. I still don't understand why she did it. Was Carl coming back with Lydia really that egregious? Beta seems bad-ass and there has to be a reason he doesn't want anyone seeing his face.

Beta seems bad-ass and there has to be a reason he doesn't want anyone seeing his face.

I've thought long and hard about this, and I can't imagine anything he could be hiding that would advance the story in any meaningful way. Instead, I think he associates his real face with his past life, and he's so immersed in this savage, animalistic identity that revealing his face—and being reminded of who he really is—would leave him emotionally vulnerable. Using the skin-cowl as a means of psychological empowerment, he's able to effectively transform into another person, and without that, he'd have to face the reality of all the terrible things he's done. I have a feeling that pre-apocalypse Beta was the "gentle giant" type, but he saw an opportunity to use his stature for physical dominance among the whisperers. Though he's not proud of it, he sees it as a necessity for survival.
