Sea Or Land?

We discussed at length about where would we go, in an ideal world. We've talked about finding a castle with a deep and wide moat, with geothermal heating, with a stocked granary, and a working solar electric plant, with a basement full of canned food, along with a fully stocked armory with handguns, machetes and rifles.

What if none of these ideal situations were available? If you had the choice of taking to the sea (with a boat such as Abigail), or staying on land, with a small group of average survivors (i.e. no Special Forces snipers or expert gunsmiths in the group) in a place such as The Prison, where would you prefer to be in? What are the pros and cons of being on land vs the sea?

LAND

  • Flexibility to move wherever you want
  • More food and supplies available for a smart scavenger
  • More survivors to link up with
  • Can start farming once things stabilize

SEA:

  • You can see enemies coming from miles away - no more surprises
  • Fishing provides easily available protein in the diet - no need to go all vegan or be dependent on hunting in the forests
  • Walkers are just floaters - a total non-issue unless you come near shore
  • Once gas and diesel give out, you can use the wind to travel thousands of miles if need be

I would definitely choose a large, sturdy ship. Something that can withstand all manner of nautical storm.

Binoculars/telescopes would be essential, because you have to go ashore sometimes for various supplies and you don't want to approach shore unless you feel the coast is clear.

Picking up people would be a goal for me- I'm no Strand. I'd like to build an island community with lots of ships and boats. But I would only approach very small groups. If you grow too big, get another ship. Certainly fence off a few offshore islands.

There is a downside to any plan, so ultimately we are rolling dice. The goal is to maximize your odds of rolling well.

Biggest problem at sea would be drinking water, then you have are buggered once the diesel runs out. If a storm hits that also could be a slight inconvinence to things.

You need a half way house, a nice island with its own fresh water spring, a sail boat with a little engine and a decent CB radio just in case.

You could just have a boat on a deep lake. Just anchor it in the middle and row to shore

Now I lay me down to sleep, I pray thee Lord these bites aren't deep.
Should I die before I wake, I pray thee Lord, my skull they break.

i don't like the which would you prefer/better arguments, both have pros and cons. just like melee or guns, both have pros and cons.

i would have land that's about 10 miles from the ocean. the only downfall is hurricanes or bad storms. both have food source. however withing 5 yrs if man is to fall the ocean would have so much more fish it would be extremely nice. land would be slim because of the dead.

A sail boat would be a must-have. Even a luxury yacht like Abigail can go only 3000 miles and is then just a raft. So, something like this would be sweet...

I like the look of that! Would probably go up the western islands of Scotland, low population, plenty of sheltered lochs in case of a storm, loads of sea fish and even a large red deer population.

The biggest problem of being at sea for extended periods is that there are lots of naval ships from all over the world which are now cut off from base, and with no news of their families (all presumed dead). These would now be pirate ships to survive, and the crew would probably vote to set up their own little island - each captain a mini-dictator. Any large, well-stocked civilian yacht would be rapidly detected, overtaken and boarded. Any island home in attractive places (such as the Scottish islands) would get a visit from an armed shore party pretty soon.

The army would fall prey to the same zombie bug as the general population, and units would slowly break up. It is also easier to go undercover and stay out of sight of rogue soldiers. The navy, on the other hand, would be immune unless someone onboard dies...not too many healthy sailors drop dead from heart attacks. And it's a lot more difficult to hide on the open seas, from a vessel built to hunt down other ships.

There ain't many big Anchorage in the western islands. You have the Clyde which is near by and places like oben could just about take a warship but otherwise is shallow beaches and rocks

chances are most military would want to find their way back to their families whether they think they are dead or not. once the world goes to shit and leaders die i feel that maybe...(idk I'm not in the military.) they would say fuck rank and want to go home. it would be mayhem on each ship.
