It was implied, especially in the flashback scene where Shane catches up to Lori at school picking up Carl to tell her that Rick was shot, that an affair had started before the ZA.

I certainly never got that feeling. All she was doing was venting to a friend about having problems in her marriage.

At one point (after Shane brought Lori back to the farm after she crashed the car) she adamantly denied that there was anything between them before the ZA. Shane was just acknowledging that he had feelings for her before Rick was ever shot.

I disagree.  I think it was implied that Shane had feelings for her or was at least attracted to her, but there was no indication that she thought of him that way at all.

I think it damages the story to suggest that Lori and Shane had an affair.
Shane was family to Rick, and in Lori's mind that's all there was.

Then, with Rick dead, and the world descended into a hellish nightmare landscape, Lori sought escape in the arms of someone she trusted completely and cared for. Shane may have already had romantic feelings, but he would have kept them in check.

He did not seal off Rick to die, he honestly thought he couldn't save Rick- that Rick was dead anyway. Rick turning up was a happy moment for Shane, and he would have removed himself from contention if everyone was safe and secure.

It was the apocalypse paired with crossing a line he never thought possible that unhinged him. It's difficult to say what decisions he would have made if Rick had been around the whole time. But they would have learned the world together and I think both would have been different for it.

Feel like its more worth focusing on where shane would be right now.

Personally, id say Rick at season 4b was where shane was from the start near enough.

The problem people had with shane wasnt with his views, it was more with how easily he took to the madness n the brutality.

Id say its less of, has Rick caught up with Shane, n more, if hed of lived, what Shane would of developed into.

Rick as a leader took a more natural transition, from trying to preserve life, you learning how to survive, and learning he had to be brutal no matter how he felt about it to survive and protect his family.

Shane jumped at it straight away. Would he be a true monster, or would he be a tough ally?

I don't think anything was going on prior to Rick getting shot.  If that were the case I think Rick would have figured it out.

In "18 Miles Out," Rick reveals that he had already figured it out before Lori ever told him.

He said he knew as soon as he got back and he wanted to break Shane's jaw.

In my opinion that nonsense about Lori and Shane having an affair before the start of the ZA is head canon by Lori haters. Nothing was implied in that school scene or anywhere else.  Rick and Shane were so close that it is likely that Lori and Shane were very good friends as well, who would support each other in a crisis like Rick's shooting.  We saw that Shane was like a beloved uncle to Carl.  If Lori and Shane were good friends before the ZA then everything that happened between them afterwards makes sense.

Otherwise, about Rick and Shane I agree with Dead Pelican:

"I think it's pretty apparent based on what we know of Rick and Shane prior to the apocalypse.  Before Shane and Lori hooked up, Shane was Rick's wing man and never second- guessed him.

But once Shane became emotionally involved with Lori- then Rick was his enemy and so argued with him on pretty much everything."

(Sorry, can't multiquote.)

I think, just looking at Rick putting a knife in someone's head without even thinking, he's getting worse than Shane man

When did that happen? Because during the raid on the Saviors' compound there was a moment of hesitation. Last episode he knifed a guy, but that guy was going to die in pain and therefore it can be seen as a mercy killing. Rick's done way worse a while ago, like when he ran down and murdered that cop for convenience's sake.

He isn't like Shane, however. Or he is in the do anything to survive aspect, but the more important aspect to Shane, I think, was his selfishness. He wanted to kill Rick because he thought he could protect Carl and Lori better than Rick could, yes. But moreso he wanted to resume boning Lori. Rick is just as harsh as Shane was to outsiders, but he's far better because his insiders aren't just himself and his best friend's wife (who doesn't want anything to do with him) and son. Whereas Rick has a whole community to defend, Shane only had the imaginary family in his head.

I agree that Shane's motivations were based on his sexual/emotional drive. Rick is still driven by the desire to protect his family/group at any cost at this point. Shane's ruthless shooting of Otis was fueled by his twisted desire to become Carl and Lori's protector. Rick has become hardened and ruthless but I don't believe he would have sacrificed Otis like Shane did;  has not hesitated in killing perceived enemies outright.

Yep, Rick said to save the bullets....just like the Governor did when they were finishing off the guys in the crashed helicopter.

You're right. After the first road block Shane would have turned around and said: "Well we tried." and let Maggie die. He only would have pressed on if it was Carl. Shane would abandon the group long before he would have made it the batting cage.

I believe we may see this be a big part of Season 7 actually. And it was especially evident in Season 6. The ending seen of one of the episodes, that I can't think of the exact episode number, in Season 6, where Rick kills the one guy who claims he's Negan, we see a darker side of Rick for sure. Normally, like he has many times in Seasons 2 & 3, he would hold them hostage and make a group decision. But now he's killing with out reluctancy. I do believe (Without reading the comics) that in Season 7, we could see Rick turn out to be the villain. What proves my point more would be in the comics (I heard) That it is Glenn who Negan kills, causing Maggie to go on her own path, and eventually rule Hilltop. This could turn out to be a "Civil War" so to speak between Maggie's group and Rick's. It would be an interesting Season 7 for sure if that's how it would turn out.

Exactly! Jesus christ I miss Shane!
Rick is like a villain now man. But I think now, after that (if there's an after that) Rick is going to calm is ass down. He got TOO CRAZY. Damn!
Season 7 could be one of the best. But Maggie's group and stuff... nah! Don't think so.

I was on a separate forum talking about how Rick looks like he was turning into a Shane like character (Link to forum at bottom). The author had very valid points, and I myself have been thinking about that. Thinking about it even more I thought of something. Note, I have not read the comics, but do know a couple things about them.

The Turn

So getting to thinking about this topic, I thought about how Rick has become more evil. One of the most clear as day of this happening, is where in Season 6, Rick killed a man who claimed he was Negan. He had no thought or anything, he just killed him. This is so much different than the Season 2 and 3 Rick. Normally (In Season 2 or 3) he would at least hold him hostage and try and get some info out of him. This is probably the point I noticed It the most.

Season 7 or 8 Possibility

Comic spoilers:

Spoiler

Teams

The teams could possibly consist of the following.

Team Rick (Alexandria):

-Rick

-Carl

-Sasha

-Michonne

-Rosita

-Darryl

-Gabriel

Team Maggie (Hilltop):

-Maggie

-Abraham

-Eugene

-Jesus

-Aaron

-Morgan

-Carol

Chances

Now the chances of this happening are obviously slim. They still do have to deal with Negan and the saviors, but I guess you could add them in too causing a three-way battle. But it's something fun to think about. Post your ideas of what you think about this and who the teams might be down below!

You should really use spoiler tags for some of the things you said...

You're forgetting about another group which was hinted at in the last two episodes. I don't think they will stray this far from the comic book storyline. But I could definitely imagine some kind of tension coming up between those from Alexandria and those from the Hilltop.

The forum (and link) you are referring to is our forum.  :D

If you are going to include comic spoilers in your post, please either label the title of the thread with "Comic Spoilers" or use the spoiler tags for your comic talk.

Since this is along the same topic as the link you posted, I'm going to merge your post with that one.  :)
