Okay so I just finished rewatching THE WALKING DEAD again like many others on this site and well... I was thinking about the prison flu. Will we ever see it again? Why haven't we seen any walkers after the prison that have signs of the flu virus?

Maybe they can have the flu re-emerge at Alexandria. Hey, it could be a filler arc so they can push back Negan.

For now I'd say no. Maybe in future seasons this type of thing may come up again, but only after Negan is dealt with.

The writers already forgot that storyline. It was just filler, anyway.

Alternatively, you could also just call me Soiled_Panties, on account of how pissy I can be.

It wasn't filler at all. It generated one of the biggest storylines of S4 and that was Carol killing Karen and David. That arc even drove the story forward in Season 5, as Carol's banishment was still a factor.

I don't think another virus will have a major impact on the story. That virus seemed to be contained to the general area in the Atlanta region, so I can understand why they haven't seen walkers with signs of the virus in the DC area.

Mod edit: I added "Comic Spoilers" to the title since the comic talk (Negan) wasn't tagged.

Well when you think about it... It wasn't really filler because if it wasn't for the super flu the governor's men would have been surrounded because they had it planned that they would surround the governor if he ever came back and sure enough he did. If it wasn't for the flu making almost all of the prison sick, they would still be at the prison.

I agree with Ser mostly.  BWR lost 3 of this grandparents to the 1918 flu.  His mom's folks in 1922 and his grandfather in 1921.  That was 3 and 4 years after the epidemic.  In reality, the flu is only deadly now in 3rd world type situations.  Give people water, treat secondary infections and bam, you live.  That epidemic was world wide and if Atlanta had it, DC likely did.  So, I think it could recur but think the writers won't pull it back into the story line.

I definitely agree that the ZA is ripe for unsanitary conditions and it's very likely that all kinds of nasty stuff would be floating around. However, one of the major factors for a virus to spread worldwide is people traveling, be it by boat or air. That's one thing that wouldn't be happening in a ZA.

One thing that hasn't really been explored on the show is people dying from other diseases that could be otherwise treated with medical care.

This is something I've wanted to see for quite a while. I can't remember what show I saw it on, but it was in the vein of Life After People except with a small amount of survivors after an apocalyptic event. It followed a man and his family as they talked about the kinds of threats he would have to deal with to survive, gave advice and tips, that sort of thing. Well, they made it and after a decade or so, it showed the family had banded together with others, made a small settlement and discussed how they could utilize the same sort of shite early settlers used to thrive. Life was good. He was a leader in the community. He and his wife had another child. His son had grown up and was teaching the others about farming or something important. They had a feast and there were smiles of contentment all around. It showed a tiny, non-descript cut on man's hand as he ate, then abruptly said he died from tetanus a week later. The end.

Made it through all that shit, and died of tetanus.   That's the kind of curveball I'd like to see on the show.

Bout to say... go back 200 years and people died from nicking themselves shaving. I don't think We'll see the prison flu. Unlike The Black Death where people could still travel and potentially bring rats and fleas with them to the next town, people in the ZA are hunkering down because travel just isn't safe. It's very likely that after a three years into the ZA what ever The Flu was that attacked the prison area was a local and new strain of flu that burnt itself out. It's unlikely they'll ever encounter that specific disease again, unless Rick's group are all carriers that have it but aren't expressing symptoms, which is unlikely.

That's not to say that a similar flu might not crop up that might have similar symptoms but it wouldn't be 'the same' disease. Also considering the kinds of conditions living in a tightly packed prison without proper ventilation and adequate medical supplies would be a perfect place for a flu to spread like wild fire.

ALX seems to have a proper community with a relatively well stocked doctor's office, power and most conditions that would make it hard for something like that paticular flu to spread as quickly.

Still... you're just as dead if you die from bleeding into your lungs or from dehydration by crapping all your fluids out because your well got contaminated.

People with AIDS are going find themselves out of their life saving drugs fairly quickly. Actually allot of people are gonna get a lingering death sentence from incurable but manageable diseases.

This is the exact reason why a zpoc like Kirkman or Romero style would get out of hand quickly. No meds=death which increases the deads army of course.
