The end of season 5a saw Rick involved in very questionable form, violent and amoral. Carl barely spoke but seems determined to fight for the weaker but is still maturing. He may veer toward violent instability again.

Carl is Rick's off-switch and visa versa. It's their story so both cannot be lost to bloodlust together or that cycle couldn't be broken. Rick needs to change and Carl is vital to all chances of that happening.

Either Carl will do something horrific, which Rick will see as his fault, snapping him out of his amorality to save Carl or Rick will commit a crime so heinous as to alienate Carl and his fear of losing his love will change him.

The list of crimes that could shock either of those two like that is quite short at this stage. Rick will not keep slaves, eat or rob strangers and neither will Carl. It will have to be a killing with some emotional impact.

(My suggestion is either Carl or Rick will kill one of the group as we know them by the end of

Season 5b. The only crimes now are against your clan. Abraham and Rick will butt heads and during that fight an Abraham shaped corpse would have the required effect.)

Or something else...but their interactions will define 5b because Rick better come back. Ricks not home right now.

There would be no audience for a Smell-O-VisionĀ© version of The Walking Dead.

I dunno... Seems like Rick is more at home than he ever has been.

I think the changes to his character were necessary for him to survive in the apocalypse.

"There's no "I" in team"

"Yeah, there's no "U" either. So I guess if I'm not on the team, and you're not on the team, nobody's on the God damn team. The team sucks!"

I agree... Rick is not only more at home, but it is the right home, the right place to be at this point in the ZA.  He has changed for the better... the better to survive, for him and his group.

I think he still has his moral sense, he is still concerned with right and wrong. It is just that a lot of what is "right and wrong" has changed over the course of the ZA, has been eroded by the ZA, or at least become more gray.

Rick was going to abandon the man in the train car.

*Rick would say they had no time

Rick went hack crazy on the Termites long after their deaths.

*Rick would say he needed to let out the rage so it didn't consume him

Rick was forcing Gabriel to go where he wanted Gabriel to go and he moved into Gabriel's church uninvited.

*Rick would say they save his life and they couldn't be sure he wasn't a threat

Just a few examples of areas where Rick is NOT changed for the better. Ready justifications are not the same as legitimate necessary changes. Rick is not adapted to this world. I will agree that he has a moral center, and I agree that he doesn't have a cruel first response. But Rick does have a fog that clouds his focus. I think the OP has a point. It's not that Rick is lost- it's that Rick like so many is barely hanging on. This world requires the vigilance of a family that cares. Rick has that, and he needs it. Everyone is a day away from the edge and the idea that any of them will find and remain in balance is just not true. They will need constant work to maintain that balance, and Rick's balance needs tending.

I cant see Carl becoming the monster and travelling down the dark path again right now, unless.....
something happens to Michonne. That would send him over.

I thought Rick was downright paranoid when asking FG if he was "working" with someone.

I watched FG's face and Rick was scaring the hell out of him.

[[ It was all a setup, and Gabriel planned it so he was out on that rock surrounded by Walkers, cuz he

knew Rick would be by in a few minutes to  save him? Paranoid.]]

If you ask me, while he was on his way, losing Hershel like that, so brutally, from an already established enemy

who Rick could have taken out but didn't, really screwed Rick up even further. He'd grown to love and trust

Hershel--he'd become a mentor in wisdom, farming and faith--he was his rock, keeping Rick human.

Its true Rick doesn't have a cruel first response, but his first response has become automatic extreme suspicion.

Couple that with paranoia and you have one very dangerous dude.

You said it better than me. Badass definitely does not equal 'right in the head'.
