The green areas are devoid of population. Knowing the country's terrian variations as well, helps.

It's explained here.

Block is the smallest area unit used by the U.S. Census Bureau for tabulating statistics. As of the 2010 census, the United States consists of 11,078,300 Census Blocks. Of them, 4,871,270 blocks totaling 4.61 million square kilometers were reported to have no population living inside them. Despite having a population of more than 310 million people, 47 percent of the USA remains unoccupied.

Someone needs to tell Rick Grimes & company that (western) Nebraska wasn't such a bad idea after all.

That's a great map. What's great is that there are vast uninhabited areas within ten miles of Los Angeles. If you're on the fringes of the city, you might be OK.

I notice, too, that there's a big green blob south of Green Bay, which looks like Lake Winnebago. So, I wonder how much of this map is just water, in addition to mountainous areas, etc.

Well, given the ingenuity of some people, no place is completely uninhabitable.

And then you have vast amounts of desert type area, which would be a real hard place to live in unless you were some kind of super survivor expert type person.

good point, but i'm sure there is a reason those areas are unoccupied.

How about part of that state and others around it is the breadbasket of the world.

I see your point, but that wouldn't be the case in an apocalypse scenario. Those states have the ability to grow massive amounts of crops because they have industrialized machines. I'm just assuming survivors wouldn't have the resources or capabilities of running those types of machines. Also, it would seem harder to scavenge for supplies in an area with a small population density.

Figure it this way. You need those huge harvesters to feed huge amounts of people. Say you and a group of 10 others survived and managed to make it out there. Now you got acres of corn and wheat crops to harvest by hand, just enough to sustain 10 people if at least 4-5 of them get out the hand sickles and do it the old fashioned way. Threshing the wheat by hand, gathering up the kernels.

Add on pigs and cattle that are also grown out there (on a small scale), some may still be alive (very HUNGRY... so feed 'em first then round 'em up) and you got your fresh meat. Set up towers on (dead) telephone/power-lines to scan the area and radios to communicate.
Do-able.
