    Beth is not a badass.
adjective

  1. 1.
    tough or aggressive.
"a strange fellow with a badass temper"

    Used in a sentence:
Beth does not have a badass bone in her body.
    •

  2. 2.
    formidable; excellent.

Tara was not a cop. It was a lie she told to threaten intruders and newcomers.

I thought she was actually attending the Academy, but the ZA happened before she was ever really trained.

I saw this thread a while ago back when I didn't have an account on this forum and I really wanted to share my thoughts. For me Beth was just kind of there in the beginning but I did not hate her or wished her death. I simply expected her to be killed off pretty soon because she was an undeveloped and weak character. I'm glad they didn't. One of the reasons is that I think she remembers us that people are different even if they may seek the same thing, be it shelter or food. It makes sense for her to be in the show. Every group has different people. She, like many other characters, sheds light on how the zombie mess changes you or not.

I also think that a part of Hershel lives on with her. Beth is no Hershel but she still remembers me of him, of the humanity left in some people and the difficult choices the characters have to make.

Beth may get a bigger role next season and develop as a character... or she may die early, showing us once and for all that you have to change in order to live in this world. Can she become stronger but still keep her good spirits, hope and kindness? That would be interesting to see, at least for me. Even though she is not my favourite, I still think that it's realistic to have a character like Beth, boring and annoying as it may be sometimes.

Yes I agree completely, great post.  I used to be indifferent to her but I hate her a bit right now but if they can make her more interesting in a believable way I am all for it, there is a place for weak characters who can supply something else I just don't want some ridiculous personality shift for her.

I am in the Beth is no bad ass camp. I just don't see it.

As for who could replace comic Andrea, I don't see Tara in that role either because

Spoiler
I can see Sasha or Maggie fulfilling both aspects of comic Andrea's character, Maggie especially after how she took out that zombie with the ventilator in Internment. Hershel told her not to shot because she might hit the bag and Glenn needed the bag. Maggie shot the zombie anyway demonstrating that she has the sharpshooting skills to replace comic Andrea.

Furthermore,

I'm not thinking about who will replace comic Andrea, but more about Rick's love interest. I'm not sure that it will ever become romantic, but Rick and Michonne feel like a couple to me.

Rick and Michonne don't feel like a couple to me as much as Rick, Michonne, and Carl feel like a family. This could become romantic down the line, but I am not sure I want it to. I have yet to see any chemistry from them like I did Rick and Carol when Carol learned of Lori's death. I had hoped Carol would be a love interest for Rick because of that chemistry. However, Carol's season 4 storyline has ruined that. I would like to see some chemistry that they can turn into a romance before I start shipping Richonne.

The more I think about it, I don't think I have seen chemistry between Michonne and anyone. Maybe that is because of her recent epiphany and decision to reconnect with people and not hold herself back. Also, considering her backstory with her previous boyfriend Mike, I think her gradually warming up to any romance would make sense because she would have to learn to trust a man that way again. She trusts Rick in regards to defense and survival, but nothing more yet. Her first deeper relationship since her epiphany is with Carl, a child, a teenage child, but still a child. I don't find that surprising considering her backstory. Carl is less of a threat to her emotionally. He is less likely to hurt her than a man.

That is a very good point about it being a family vibe. However, I do see chemistry between them. It could be coming from that scene is S3 when Rick was checking out Michonne when she forgave him for considering turning her over to the Governor.

Since the beginning of S4, they have shown an ease and comfortability toward each other. For instance, when she brought back an electric razor for him. She also brought candy and comic books for Carl, which does lend to that family vibe.

I don't think either one of them has been in a place to take it further, but there is certainly a deep respect and trust there.

The scene with Rick and Carol was very emotional, but I didn't see it as sexual. It felt like two family members being reunited. It showed how far they had come with their respect for each other. Carol had become the primary caregiver to Lori (since Hershel was unable to at that time) and had become very close to Lori. So I don't think that Rick looked at her any other way than becoming a stronger, contributing member of their family.

I agree that the Rick and Carol scene was emotional rather than sexual, but there was something about that emotional energy that showed me the two characters and actors could generate romantic energy. Maybe I haven't seen it yet with Michonne and Rick because I saw Rick checking Michonne out in S3 as very one-sided. Michonne did not reciprocate. The emotional energy between Rick and Carol was reciprocal. Again, that may be because of where Michonne is emotionally and may come as she continues to connect with people again.

I could see it happening. Michonne has become quite charming.

Sorry can't see her going from sheltered dimwit to badass with one day of lessons.  I am torn between hoping she has a tragic death soon and hoping she makes it and they develop her into an interesting adult character.  However I don't see any reason to expect that when we next see her she will be a superhero that would be way to big a personality shift.

I agree with you here! I mentioned it in another thread that the chances of her coming back and being Sarah Connor badass are as good as me winning the lottery. We'll see her again no doubt but not in the magnitude people are hoping for.

I was thinking more along the lines of Andrea's strength and sharp shooting ect not at the romantic part, I think that could be left to someone else I would rather they not follow the comics exactly anyway I like surprises.   As far as Michonne goes, I never got a romantic vibe with Rick, I agree with it feeling more like family, a good friend for Rick and more of an aunty for Carl.

Also in the comic

What you mention behind the spoiler tag hasn't been addressed on the show, and there's absolutely no need for them to hew to the comic-version in that way.

She was training at the academy - she hadn't yet graduated. So I'd say it was a major truth stretching, moreso than a lie :D

I'm not saying beth will be a badasss or e even an Andrea I'm hoping if she gets out of this situation she will learn to hold her own . They did it with carol weak and pathetic one season someone who's capable the next . As for who should fill the Andrea role I think it could be Tara she has a chance but obviously not romantically I think michonne can do that . Either way I kind of think this show in a way needs someone like a Beth who survived because of the group it would be a bit unrealistic if you ask me.

If Beth sticks around, she's of course going to get stronger, but I agree that it'd be way too much of a stretch for her to become a major badass, or essentially the TV show version of comic Andrea.

I've always felt like Daryl is kind of like the comic Andrea of the show, in the sense that he's a great character that's been there since the beginning, has developed a close relationship with Rick and has evolved into a major badass over the course of the show.  And as far as having a tough female character handy with firearms, TV Maggie easily fills that void.

I don't see the Michonne and Rick relationship as anything more than a camaraderie.  If there's ever a new love interest for Rick in the future, I don't see it being any of our current characters.

The two bit lush is no where near being better than ever. In fact, it's the exact opposite. In season2 and 3, I honestly had no motive to care about her appearance. She was just Hershel's youngest, Maggie's sister. A good thing too, because Emily Kinney isn't the strongest actress (overstatement of the year)

When she appeared in season4, she was shown to be somebody who "doesn't cry anymore". Somebody who had been hardened by the things that have occurred. Yet in episode 3, she cries when Hershel goes into the quarantine zone. In episode8, she cries when Hershel is killed (understandable this one), she cries in Inmates and then she cries in Still. For somebody who doesn't cry a lot, that's a lot of crying.

She is presented as optimistic and hopeful. Well, something must have been lost in adaption from script to screen because I never saw this. She cries a lot at her situation, she practically all but States that Daryl was just a common criminal. She thinks her sister Is out there somewhere, but what does she do? Play juvenile games and disrespect her ex-alcoholic father by drinking.

Her acting has been atrocious and a real eye sore. Kinney works as a redshirt, but just barely. A glorified redshirt she can't act at all. So when she was shoved down our throats, it was honestly painful. Her laughing/crying is practically the same, and it was at it's worse in Inmates when I couldn't tell if she was laughing or crying that people had died.

As for being a badass, don't make me laugh. The girl couldn't handle a zombie that snuck up behind her in a FOREST. You know, where twigs constantly snap when people step on them. She couldn't hear the moans. She had a pathetic little dance with the zombie before Daryl tackled it down. A Maggie/Michonne/Carol/Sasha she ain't. Just the thought of her saving the group from Terminus is laughable.

She's nothing but a two bit lush bug eyed hippy who sings shitty songs and attracts the walkers. She is desperate for Daryl, as well as the next bottle of moonshine (which she downed with no problem). She is a Mary-Sue in walking form, somebody who is too perfect and has no faults. Her fake accent grates on my nerves, she is nothing more than a plot device. She couldn't even stay on the bus like she was told by Maggie, instead rushing off like she's Ellen Ripley and Sarah Connor combined into one when she is no more than a stupid little girl who is a complete nutcase that thinks of dead bodies as "beautiful". May she die a horrible long drawn out death.

As you could tell, I despise her.

@thewalkingshooter, Oh... you mean she's a dumb emotional kid that acts rashly, without thinking her actions through and is trying to be tough in a harsh world and coming up short who might be confusing a craving for emotional stability with lust and love with the only member of her 'family' she has left??
