This is what I think too. And I was also laughing to myself at the perfect symmetry of the pit. lolI definitely think they were different pits that Martinez' new group had dug out (amazingly clean and perfectly rectangular I might add)

They were indeed camping at the same spot they killed the soldiers, as the same shack is seeing in the background. But the pits were at a different place. I can remember the ground around the pits was covered by grad by grass while the military spot seems covered by dirt. I think Woodbury had the pits even before the soldiers were camping at that spot. Remember TG and his men had to be told by the helicopter pilot, Lt. Welles, where his soldiers were, so the Woodbury men didn't came across them during regular scouting of the area.Did any one else notice the spot where TG and Martinez were camping was where they ambushed the military convoy earlier in S3?
That is where their walker pits were oddly enough.

We all talked about how ricks group should have been luring walkers to them for depositing or dig their own to help
keep them off the prison walls
but this one looked like in the middle of no where/ there was a couple bodies dead down in it though/ didn't he smash one walker into
another skull?

Martinez and his group seems like scavengers raiding other camps. Sending small walker packs caught in the pits towards another camp to scare everyone of to loot everything they left behind afterwards might be a tactic.I can't see any purpose in these walker pits unless what WB was using them for/ walker fight night.

If anyone has ever tried to actually dig a pit that wide and deep, you would find it is very difficult and time consuming. But at the same time, in order to be effective, the edges at the bottom have to be square enough that whatever is in the pit can't crawl out (so no slopes). In that sense, the symmetrical edges makes sense. With that said, I don't know how much slope a walker would require in order climb out.

I couldn't see a thread for this so here goes ....Am I the only one that thought it was hilarious when The Gov fell into his own walker pits? He must've known he was in the area considering the amount of time he spent there. He would've known where the pits were & yeah he was running and panicking but c'mon! Poetic justice courtesy of the writers maybe?
The Woodbury walker pits had that "windmill sound thing" to draw walkers to the pits. So, I'm pretty sure it was a different pit.
One thing I said to my BF during that scene was, "How nice is that third walker to wait his turn before going after the Guv." He had manners.

Yeah, imentioned that in another thread.Did any one else notice the spot where TG and Martinez were camping was where they ambushed the military convoy earlier in S3?

I was thinking that if I was gonna dig pits, I'd cut out some steps or handholds, a set at each end. I really doubt a walker is either going to figure out how to use them, or have the dexterity to do so. Would be good for emergencies.

Well TG could stand in a burning Woodbury and the walkers ignored him completely, not to forget the walker that tried to bite him but missed and fell of the curb. Apparently walkers lose their appetite when they are around TG, that explains why he survived being cornered by that herd of walkers Andrea unleashed on him in "Prey".The Woodbury walker pits had that "windmill sound thing" to draw walkers to the pits. So, I'm pretty sure it was a different pit.
