Anybody else think that Dales death was dumb? I know the actor was leaving the show and therefore needed to be killed off but why in the way he did? It made Dale look weak in my opinion. Dale was one of my favorites so to see his death so weak in the television series made me disappointed. His death in the comic books was a great death. TAINTED MEAT!

I just got finished doing a marathon of season 1 & 2 with my DVD sets (my way of coping with the end of season 3) and I remember the outcry over his death and the ninja zombie/walker showing up out of nowhere in the middle of an open field. I recall watching (again) and thinking that Dale didn't fight as hard as he could have, i.e. kick the walker and/or roll it off of him, etc. etc but then I remember that Dale more-n-likely didn't have the martial arts training that I have, particularly in ground-fighting techniques.
Was it dumb, probably. Was it shocking? Most likely and that's how they wanted to do it. Could it been done better (maybe two or three walkers in a group -- which would've made more sense than taking down a full grown cow single-handedly). Carl still could've recognized the walker that he should've shot along the creek bed and the scene would've been just as sad.

It was kind of dumb, but Dale was old and spent all the time just sitting at looking around as the watchman, I'm not surprised that he barely fought at all...

Death was staring at him in the eye and he probably froze with fear. He is also older and had never shown himself to have any close combat skills. He was just a peaceful old man. So I can believe him having trouble with escaping the walker's grasp.

The ninja walker thing is a little concerning, but I didn't find it to be completely impossible. It was very dark, and Dale was very upset at the time and his mind was distracted. The cow was more noticeable than the zombie which was why he didn't notice the zombie first. He simply let his guard down for a matter of moments, but that's all it takes.

I don't think that his death was dumb. I had no idea about him leaving the show, so his death really shocked me at the time. His post-death was handled well too, seeing the impact it had on the other characters like Glenn and Andrea. So overall I was pretty satisfied with how it was done.

Yup.

His death was as lame as his character.

I know they're two different storylines and the characters are different, but it was pretty disappointing seeing him go out the way he did. When you take into consideration how comic Dale crawled himself back to the prison after being abandoned after getting bitten in the leg. Although getting a leg injury is completely different from having your stomach torn open, I was still pretty annoyed at first but I guess I can understand why they did it.

Yeah, I too was disappointed to see him go so soon. I was a big fan of the comic character and I also liked his TV counterpart. I would have liked to see what Dale would've been like after those 8 months on the road, and what he would've said about Woodbury, The Governor, Merle etc. Would've been interesting, but if the actor wants to leave the show, what can you do?

I loved Dale, it seems as if after Darabonts departure, Jeffrey asked to be axed on the show. Glenn Mazzara didn't seem to have a problem with it . And respected his wishes I guess.
in the original script of his death episode I believe it was said Herschel was supposed to die instead, and Randall was supposed to kill him. I really liked Dale and would haves picked His character over Herschel's

Really good input everyone! I also really liked your points, Slimy. I guess I was just upset to see him go out so much earlier than I had expected. It was sad but what can you do?

It's funny how the writers respected Jeffrey DeMunn's wish to leave the show, but didn't care about (season 3 spoiler)

TV Andrea was badly written, inconsistent, and a carpet munching whore. :)
