He's won some awards for horror

I did not know that.I suppose we could cut Jay a little slack. It must be hard writing someone else's story.

Agree not the best writing, but I wouldn't say it's bad. I have about 30 pages left of Road, and I've enjoyed it thoroughly, about as much as Rise.

These novels are absolute must reads if you are a WD fan, especially a comic WD fan.

I agree, I especially think Rise is imperative to read if you've read through the comics. The story is very strong in that book. I liked Road too; I think it starts a little slow, then gets really good, then sort of coasts to the end after that. It didn't have the suspense and excitement of the first book, but was still a very interesting read, and it's intriguing to see how Woodbury is developed. The only thing about Road that I really didn't like was the ending, or the 'epilogue' or whatever. I didn't think it made much sense, but it did get me excited for the third book.

I know this topic is a little old and busted, but I'd like to share my two cents.

I consider myself an avid reader, and always have a book I am actively reading. When I read the two novels I thought they were pretty good, but Rise was my least favorite of the two. I did not realize why until reading this thread. It's the adjectives! There's a scene in Rise that is so gruesome and vile. I read it while eating dinner one night. I had to put the tacos away. It made my stomach turn. Uggggh.

So yeah, nasty taste in my mouth about that one.

If you haven't checked out these yet I would say they really are worth the read. I know the writing is a little rough in some places but its not near horrible enough to want to put the books aside and stop reading. I would agree with most people that Rise is the much better of the two but Road does have a certain charm to it in some parts if you ask me. I know for a fact that I will be picking it up day one just to learn more about what happened at Woodbury after the attack on the prison. My advice would be to at least check them out at the library or pick up the paperbacks.
