How many humans are left in the entire world? The comics cite the number 5000:1, meaning that there is 1 human for every 5000 zombies, creating a world with a maximum population of about 1,500,000 humans. However, does this number only apply to the comics? Also, after how much time into the apocalypse does this ratio come into effect? A month? Two months? A year? Two years? I never understood that. In the T.V. Show, Rick claims that at least half of the population is dead; but that number doesn't sound right either. The Black Death killed off half of Europe, yet it looked nothing like the post-apocalyptic scenario of the Walking Dead. So which number should exactly be trusted?

After an event like that you would probably see lots of rural communities barely affected, with urban environments nine times decimated..

What would that amount be? Also, we notice in the show that rural communities have been mostly destroyed, too.

That result ends up being less than the fingertip of one person :)

That's the interesting thing. In rural communities, the spread of bite deaths would be less, so people would have time to get armed. In cities, people would be swarmed before they could blink. In a small town or suburban development, things would still be bad because of population density. Herschel's farm is a good example of where people would still be living. The show introduced swarming behavior as a second phase of infection that makes truly rural environments unsafe. It's an insidious plague!

I get the feeling Kirktheman intends to show the survival rate next season on the show.

If it is widespread as it is in Georgia, I would say the 99% of world pop. died during the outbreak

I think Rick's comment to the prisoners that half the population was wiped out was just an attempt to make it seem not that bad out there and encourage the prisoners to just leave. Obviously Rick knew it's much worse than just half.

I thought exactly the same. If 50% of population was still alive, there would be literally millions of people out there

If 50% of the population were wiped out, there would be billions not millions of people left alive. Regarding your earlier post about 99% of the population were wiped out, there would still be 70 million people left in the world. Is it much less than millions of people in the world, or is it 70 million? (Sorry I'm a little upset right now)

I think 99% of the population is definitely deceased! and it isn't looking good for humanity the now. Especially considering the rest are all getting killed by zombies, murdering each other and dying from diseases amongst other things.

It's always been a gripe with me that in TwD the characters run into more and more people. In the comics this wasn't a problem up until

Spoiler

In the show, they constantly run into new characters, as well as characters long thought dead. It doesn't feel to me that this is a proper zombie apocalypse, and this is in all one state as well. If they are many people alive in the first place like TWD, they should be able to band together and wipe out the zombie plague once and for all.

Instead they are killing each other. And whilst with people like the Governor it's understandable, because he's power hungry, the rest of the people we see outside of Rick's group are dimwits that are lucky to be alive after two years and hostile bandits who take whatever they want. In season1 alone we had a small group, a large community (split evenly between a group of well abled men and the elderly), a two member family and the CDC's remaining staff. That was enough for another Woodbury to take place. In season2, we have Hershel's family and Dave's group. If Dave wasn't hostile, they would have 30 people moving over to the farm, and them building a community.

And not to mention in season3. Five inmates (a couple will have to be put down though), the Governor and his army/town (at least 30 soldiers and 50 odd civilians), Tyreese and his group, the national guard (about 20), a couple of loners and a Hispanic family. With all these numbers, and if you combine them all if they weren't so hostile, they could easily take over the state if they wanted to. Plus with all the men and women, as well as the various communities, a baby boom is most likely to happen.

I know it's in human nature for the survival of the fittest and what not, but if they really wanted a normal civilisation they could have it with these numbers. Instead they choose to wage war over each other with stupid things, and it's no wonder the 99% population is dead. If they just stopped being so selfish and fought against the dead they could take back what they own.

But I understand that wouldn't be too thrilling to watch. And sorry if this doesn't make sense, but the short answer is that humans could easily reclaim their old world back and kill the dead, but they are deeply self-centred which causes so much death and destruction in the first place. And I'm not mentioning the season4 cast either, because that has waaaay more numbers than previous seasons.

Does not compute. c=?, NTP=?

Due to the rapide infection rate so early on. Most likely there was less than 25% of the population by the end of season 2.

By now I will guess the human populous is at less than 15%. People learn and adapt. Anyone surviving this long by now have a huge survival advantage.

The walker population has been in decline since the end of season 2. This is due to the lack of Survivors for walkers to create.
