I'm guessing it's because they know the show is on it's last leg and a way to improve ratings in the short term is to bring back old characters from when the show was likable.
Regardless of what people think, the fact is the show's ratings were still #1 in the 18-49 demographic for most of last season. The show is hardly on its last leg. Even after Andy and Lauren are gone, they're going to push through and see what happens. If anyone is expecting them to pull the plug after S9 or S10, they're not.

The traffic here has plummeted. But the ratings don't lie, and this forum isn't paying AMC's bills.
but it CAN be used as a barometer for loyal fans opinion of the show. The show may drag on for another 4 seasons. But it's on it's last leg. When your main stars are dropping like flies and even the diehards don't seem to care anymore...you've got issues.

RP Scott Wilson. I loved what he made of the character of Hershel, whom I still miss.
I suspect that all these cameos are the characters from the past whom Rick will see in his head as he dies, if he dies. Is there not a rumour that Sarah Wayne Callies will also appear?
It's always been my belief that only the "lunatic fringe"of fans, that is a small minority, bothers to participate in internet discussions of any movie, series or book. In this case I count myself among them and I am the only one of the half dozen or so TWD fans in my circle who visit sites such as this one. So less traffic on this site does indicate something about die-had fans but not the general audience. And as kombat said, the ratings are still very high for that money making demographic.
TWD will be rebooted after AL and LC leave and may or may not be successful, but it's fine right now.
I'm slightly encouraged by the premiere, which I rather liked.

A realistic scenario is if they see after S10 that it just isn't working without Lincoln, and to a lesser extent Cohen, they could announce S11 or S12 will be the last and they work toward an end game from there.

The problem is I keep seeing spoilers and idk what's true and what's not. But if what I read or see is true. Idk how they'll have a show much longer.
I have seen many spoilers too. I have readen they´d plan to make TWD related mini series or movies, like of Governor´s past and other things like that. I think they know the show itself won´t last long whatever they do, but something on the side might drag it a bit longer on... I think the new season(s) to come will be telling a bit different story, or maybe they will put together TWD and Fear? No knowledge, just my own ponderings...

I suppose this as well. Rick will see all his old pals, just like Tyreese did.
