Every time Negan is brought up in regards to his appearance on the show, it's always hyped.

People always say "you think The Governor was bad? Bruhhhhhh wait until this guy shows up. You ain't seen nothing yet"

Another couple articles like this have popped up recently and it got me thinking....

What the fuck has Negan even done to warrant this kinda buildup? His resume is strikingly similar to the shows Governor. Both killed one loved character (the Gov:Dale and Negan:Glenn) and one character no one gave a shit about (Gov:Andrea, Negan:Spencer) so it's not like there's a huge jump in villainous asshat-ery (in fact it could be a dip, considering TV Gov also killed Axel while I'm not sure if Negan has killed anyone else)

Unless Negan's TV entrance is on par with the Prison Battle, I don't get it.

Note: It's 4 in the morning, so if I forgot any of the Neg's antics, apologies lol

The Governor killed Dale?

Anyway, in my opinion, Negan is just a more fun character. Neither are terribly interesting but the show Governor just felt like walking cliches which overall made a boring character. It was like Gimple just threw things at him like, "Uh...here's a backstory and two episodes about him! He's three-dimensional now, guys! Right? Right?!?!!?!?"

I don't really know what I'm going on about at this point. Main idea is, I prefer a villain like the Comic Governor because even though he was "one-dimensional", he felt like a more realistic character and the reader could actually deplore him since his kill count was so high (TV Gov never killed anyone I cared about. Also, I don't think Hershel and Glenn are exactly on the same scale)

Negan doesn't feel like a realistic character either, but he is a better character in my eyes. He's evil and he fucking loves it. It would be VERY difficult in my eyes for any actor (or writer) to be able to pull him off so I don't have much hope for his TV portrayal

All the villains have flaws. TV Gov has the most and is the most boring IMO. The only truly great WD villain in my eyes is Carver

Negan also killed Holly and Denise, by the way

Imagine a group of a hundred motorcycles driving down a freeway. Eventually, they hit a junction. One road goes northwest and the other goes northeast. So one guy, we'll call him S, says, "Let's go northwest!" A mile past the intersection, a semi careens into the group and kills ninety of them. Ten are wounded, but they survive and keep going. Eventually, they hit 10,000 miles. S suddenly has his consciousness thrown into his past body right before the junction. Now, he says, "Let's go northeast!" All 100 bikers survive. Happily ever after, right? But what about the ten, no nine, who went northwest and survived? What happens to the reality they were living? Does it just disappear now that S has changed the past? It's not like only bad things happened on that 10,000 mile journey. Maybe one of them fell in love with a gas station attendant and got her pregnant or maybe one adopted a homeless kid that joined the adventure. That 10,000 mile journey would be full of stories. Romances, farewells, friendships...the loss of those ninety lives is horrible and unfortunate, but what would rewriting their history mean? The nine who survived lived full lives and did the best they could with the hand they were dealt. How could it be right to just erase all that? Isn't that worth something? Is there a point to a world where everything is happy? Are people who struggle for a better life just idiots? Being human is about fighting even when it seems hopeless and finding happiness in a world that hates it. Are you saying that's worthless?

WHOOOOOOPIEEEEEESS Hershel.

They're both Bearded old white guys. lol

As for TV Gov, I still wish they would have taken away one of the first 4 episodes and replaced it with a 3rd Governor episode (well, half with the prison group/half with the governor episode) so his struggle to change wouldn't have felt so rushed.

As for Negan. Hey, maybe Gimple can do what Kirkman failed miserably at: Make Negan a consistently interesting villian, instead of one of the series' biggest annoyances a little while after his introduction.

And I knew I forgot something...

Negan and the Governor do have their similarities (killing beloved characters, waging war on Rick and his allies). I think what sets them apart is mostly their attitudes.

With the Governor (especially the TV Governor) all of his heinous actions could be explained as necessary for the survival of himself and the people of Woodbury. As time went on and the Governor got crazier, that line surely got blurred, but I still think he thought of every one of his murders as justifiable and necessary in his head.

Negan, on the other hand, didn't just murder Glenn in arguably the most brutal fashion we had ever seen in the comics, he practically got off on it. It was so vicious, yet it made him as giddy as a kid in a candy shop. He didn't do it because he had to, he did it because he truly enjoyed it. Glenn posed zero threat to Negan, but Negan still smashed his brains out in front of his wife just for shits and giggles. Completely gutting Spencer and leaving him in a bloody pile was another example of unnecessarily killing somebody just to see the gore to appease his own sick desires.

I think another part of the reason why a lot of fans think Negan is more intimidating than the Governor is the armies behind them. Negan's saviors seem to far outnumber the Woodbury soldiers. And the Saviors are also all stronger, better fighters than the civilians from Woodbury. So I think that helped to present defeating Negan as a much more difficult task than defeating the Governor (and technically nobody even defeated the Governor, nobody won that war).
