Lots of talk about symbolism during the hiatus. How about this...

When Rick was looking for wire to tie Michonne up I noticed he grabbed some Ethernet cable before changing his mind.

As you know Ethernet cable is used for networking/internet.

I think the writers choose Ethernet cable to symbolize the internet hate Michonne was receiving in the first half of season 3. I remember many negative comments early on about her failure to communicate, and sullen character portrayal.

By Rick choosing the Ethernet cable it showed that Michonne would be bound by the negative internet comments. However Rick changed his mind which was the writers way of saying they don't care about the internet comments and they would continue to write Michonne their own way.

thoughts?

I remember Merle telling Rick to get wire, not rope, to bind her hands, with the reason being to use something she couldn't chew through. You have to figure at a prison, the most common type of wire would be electronic in nature. Out in the courtyard, there's tons of computer and other office equipment, which was either tossed outside during a prison riot at the onset of the apocalypse, or tossed outside by Rick and co when they moved in. With Rick grabbing the wire from the piles outside, they were able to get the shot of Lori on the bridge. I don't really think there's much symbolism in the wire itself, but rather where he obtained it.

It could be possible that they were taking a potshot at the Internet fans, though these episodes are written before the first one airs. Changes could be made, yes, but I feel the scene with Lori on the bridge was thought out long before anyone could react to season 3.

I think that writing tweak could have been made by the director/writers the day of the shoot. Perhaps the director saw all kinds of cable outside and directed Andrew Lincon to grab the ethernet cable.

I think it was ethernet cable on purpose and not some other type of wire.

There was all kinds of subitities going on in that sceen, me thinks.

I wonder if there is a timeline on when they write the episodes? Are they still writing the final episodes when the first ones air?

If you want to go into an analysis of the wire, for a quick one, I'd say that because it's an ethernet cable, it was created to bind people together through the medium of the internet. Instead of using it to separate an outcast and make them feel isolated. Rick deciding not to use it and throwing it back down after seeing Lori is a representation of how he decides to let Michonne stay and that he's finally accepted her as one of them.

I always wondered what that was about. Thought it had something to do with Lori and the phone, I didn't think about tying Michonne up.

Did anyone else notice anything that may have been symbolic in season 3?

I made a whole patterns thread somewhere around here :) it has quite a few patterns people noticed in it. I think it's under the main discussion thing like the one that is Wd in general not a specific season. I'll find it and bump It if you want to see more patterns

^^^ This.

There are about 3 types of primary wiring that get run in homes and businesses today. Coax (cable), Romex (outlets), and Ethernet (RJ45). A lot of the power outlets have an Ethernet connector next to it, and depending on the location, there is also a USB port next to the Ethernet.

There is also low voltage 2, 3, 5, and 7 wire for Doorbells, Speakers, Gas fireplaces, Alarms systems, and Thermostats.

So, did Merle use the rotary dial thing and phone cord to bind her hands because they wanted us to call in to the Talking Dead? ;)

My question is in the OP... what the hell are the advertisement pop-ups when you run your mouse/cursor over certain underlined words ? Go on back to the original post and run your cursor over it... you'll see what I mean.
Getting real sick of the internet's shit as far as ads and malware hidden in almost damned near everything. Getting to where you don't dare click on ANYTHING anymore. Christ!

I think the Ethernet cable was nothing more than a prop. There were other computer parts in the rubble outside, like monitors and keyboards, so it makes sense he'd find Ethernet cable. It was just to show him looking for something to tie Michonne up with, and it could have been anything, but those cables were already lying around out there, so it made sense.

When that happened to me, it was a Google Chrome Add-on that I had never downloaded, so I just deactivated it and things went back to normal.
