The Walking Dead Season 3 Ep 13 - Arrow On The Doorpost

I, too, wondered about the sex while on guard. Fully expected them to miss some lurking danger. However, I think it was the writers' way of bringing closure to the rift between Glen and Maggie. Something we can stop worrying about.
The scenes with TG and Rick, however, were *frowning* bothersome. I can understand the two men sizing each other up. What bothered me were those phony smiles from TG. Something about his teeth bothers me - dentures? Anyway, I didn't see it as very good acting on Morrisey's part. But the expression he wore when Rick lifted that whiskey made me wonder if there was "tea" in it. Went nowhere. Was he simply happy he got Rick to share a drink with him?
Andrea must have been talking nonstop since she arrived at WB. Shane might be the father of Rick's baby? She thought this was conversation fodder? That struck me as a bit of a stretch. One might describe the people previously known, but in this kind of detail? Nah. Not buying it.
I'm glad to see from previews that Andrea and Milton will join forces against TG. Don't like the entire WB arc. It must have been good in the comic, but apparently didn't make it to the TV screen. Will be glad when it's over.
And turn over Michonne? Rick needs to just tell her - and allow her and Merle to go in like Ninja and her sidekick. Behead TG and leave the others. Martinez and Milton can run the place.

My cons are:
- Rick considering giving up Michonne. I thought by now he'd know that Phillip will kill them all anyway.
I think he knows that. That's why he had that talk with everyone in the prison. But he's scared, and rightfully so. And he confided in Herschel. I like how Herschel always keeps him grounded. That's why I sincerely hope that Herschel survives. I love the dynamics of their relationship, the trust and respect they have for each other, and I really liked that Herschel stepped up and put Rick in his place when he had to.

I'm wondering how did the governor know Rick and his group copped new guns (from Morgan)? Someone in the group is a snitch... I'm thinkin' it's Merle "I tried to kill that black B!" Dixon.
Yeah, Merle got on his cell phone and CALLED the governor.
Get real, folks. Merle ain't a snitch. Governor's a popeye because of what Merle failed to do.
Governor's got folks, he's got eyes all over and I'm sure he sent extra reconnaissance surrounding the prison. See who goes in, who comes out.

P.s. one more thing, Andrea is such a moron for telling the governor about Judith and Shane etc. exposing Ricks weakness. It's none of her business and not her place to tell not to mention TG did not need to know about ricks personal life. I hate Andrea so much, it made me mad.
I haven't liked Andrea since she first pulled a gun (with the safety on no less) out on Rick at the department store in ATL. She's as dumb as a box of rocks. I hope that her gossip about his kid hits a nerve with Rick so badly that he does NOT take her back in the group.

And when Daryl and Martinez and Andrea kill the few in their wait for Rick and the Gov, the walkers don't seem that hungry!

I liked how they showed that when it comes to "negotiations", the Governor has the upper hand. It wasn't about negotiating at all, it was about getting inside Rick's head, and TG did just that. He brought up his wife because he knew that would touch a raw nerve with Rick, and you could see TG smirking when Rick wavered and had to take a drink of the whiskey after Philip mused "What did she want".
Rick was stupid to go to the meeting. TG has already made up his mind as to what he's going to do.
The set up for the Woodbury mutiny was also nice, if that is indeed what will happen and they aren't just toying with us.

They let people talk. Anyone who says it was boring is just wrong. This is how you make us care about characters. This is how you set up your story. And it only took them 13 episodes to do so.
YES. Thank you.
Action is great, but too much action hurts the characters developments. This season has felt like 13 hour long Three's Company episode. If everyone had just sat down and talked from the very beginning a lot of this shit could've been avoided.
Why exactly does the Governor want to slaughter Rick and his group?
Because he's a coward. He's feels threatened by everything and anyone who questions his authority. Team Prison only has a few members, most of which can't shoot for shit, but look how far they've come. They haven't been living in a cushy town, they've been on the road. They're fierce. He's not. He's been sitting at home drinking whiskey and giving out orders. I bet he can't even run a quarter of a mile without having to stop to take a break. I bet he bruises easily. I bet he has anemia. I bet he never got any badges at Boy Scouts but maybe got, like, two because the scout leader pitied him. The Governor wants to kill them all because he may have numbers, but Woodbury is weak, HE is weak, and he knows this, and a man like Rick with that drive, determination, and power could wipe him out in an instant.
Hershel continues to be my fave. I love how he doesn't see two teams, he sees people in a conflict. I'm glad Rick sought out his advice at the end and I'm glad that even Hershel isn't perfect. Yes, he would think about giving Michonne away to save his daughters. Obviously as a last resort, and he would probably think of other ways, but if it came down to that he'd do it. He's not perfect. No one on the show is perfect (well, except Daryl) and I really love that.
This is the first episode where I feel like I have my Andrea back. It's the first episode where I didn't feel like slapping her. I think her setting up the meeting was just a last desperate attempt, but she was fooling herself. I'm glad that she admitted she has no idea what she's doing and she has no idea what she's gonna do. And I'm glad someone FINALLY told her about Maggie (well, no one specifically told her, she just happened to hear it).
And I finally get why Andrea wants to protect the people of Woodbury. I've been against this storyline all season (check out my post in Why Woodbury Isn't Working), but how adorable was Milton last night? He's just so sweet and innocent and it made me realize - there's a lot of Miltons in Woodbury. And even though we haven't seen it on screen, these people are her friends. Asking Andrea to pick a side is unfair because either Team will basically force her to kill her friends. I don't think she could bring herself to shoot Milton just like I don't think she could bring herself to shoot Carol.
And now Woodbury also has Sasha and Tyreese. So I'm finally okay with Andrea trying to bring peace to both groups (it was dragged too long, but what's done is done). She's not going to succeed, and she finally realized it tonight. She's done trying to make peace, she knows it's not gonna happen. But now she's gonna try to figure out another way. She doesn't give up. I gave her a lot of credit for realizing she can't go back to Woodbury because her life is in danger, but she did anyway because other lives are in danger, too. She's really risking her life for both groups. Two for you, Andrea Coco.
The scenes between Daryl and Martinez were my favorite. It reminds me of that Band of Brothers episode where the American soldiers realize the German soldiers were guys just like them and that under different circumstances, they might've been great friends. If it wasn't for The Philip And Rick Penis Contest Season Long Extravaganza, Daryl and Martinez would've been great friends. They might've even been best friends. This is another example of this war hurting innocent people. It's stupid, it needs to end. No lives should be lost because Rick and The Governor just can't fucking man up and either kill each other or walk away (of course the Governor is batshit at this point, so the only option is killing him).
I love how they were just like two kids in a playground calling each other names because deep down they have no idea why they're supposed to dislike each other. They just know that "my dad says I'm not supposed to talk to you because my dad doesn't like your dad" and that's it. But then they talk, and they like each other. I really loved that.
Some things I didn't like:
1. The Merle scenes. Still don't trust him, never will. If I was Glenn I would've just let him go on his own. He's obviously trying to manipulate everyone and failing miserably. I didn't buy that he wanted to kill the Governor to protect Daryl. Something's up with Merle. I HATED his scene with Michonne, I don't know if she was playing him, but really? A few episodes ago he was trying to kill her, and he only didn't because she got away. When she told him "you're not a killer"... ugh. What about Carlugio (or whatever the hell his name was)? I'm never going to forgive Merle for all the terrible things he's done and I wish the writers would stop trying to excuse his behavior. I like his humor, he gets the best lines, but as a human being I find him despicable.
2. If Andrea set up the meeting between the Governor and Rick, why did she act surprised that the Governor was there?
3. So done with The Governor. I really hope he dies at the end of the season. The execution of this character failed in every way and at this point the fact that he's still alive is a huge suspension of disbelief. Are you telling me Rick can casually shoot two guys in a bar without batting an eyelash, but he doesn't put a bullet between the Governor's eyes the minute he sees him? The Governor stands right in front of the prison for like a whole 10 minutes and nobody can shoot him? Andrea can't kill him? And on top of that, he doesn't even WANT the prison? He just wants Michonne? Come on. What made the Governor so great in the comics is that he lived that long because he was unreachable. No one could get near him. But this Governor is so invincible he could probably sneak into the prison and take a nap with Carol and then just walk back to Woodbury without anyone giving him a scratch. Kill the bitch already.
4. Glenn's storyline, I hope last night was the last of it. First he wants to sneak into Woodbury and kill the Governor. Now he's given a chance to sneak into the meeting point and kill the Governor and he absolutely refuses to. He was at odds with the group for wanting to go back for the Governor's head. Now he's at odds because he won't. If I dig deep down I can see his motivations: he's really just in turmoil and is all bark no bite. He's dealing with PTSD. But it should be clear in the writing and I feel like it hasn't been. Glenn's storyline is the perfect example of a great idea that would've worked if the writers had more talent. But just like everything else, it was glossed over and brought to a halt randomly.
5. The Glenn/Maggie sex scene. When it started I was just like, okay, someone say cut. But then they kept going and I thought it was going to lead somewhere interesting. I thought Maggie was going to freak out and not be able to do it because of her experiences with the Governor. But then that didn't happen and the scene kept going. Then I thought, maybe Glenn won't be able to perform because of her experiences with the Governor. But then that didn't happen and I just sat there blinking while turning down the volume so my neighbors didn't think I was a pervert.
Also, Lauren Cohan kept talking about how Glenn's obsession with revenge would hurt the relationship between Glenn and Maggie but this didn't happen. Obviously they couldn't communicate for a couple of episodes, but it was so minor and I was expecting more out of this storyline.
But whatever, we saw Laurie Holden naked, so I guess it was Lauren Cohan's turn. Now they just need to realize girls watch the show too and give us naked Andrew Lincoln.

I, overall, enjoyed this episode, even though it was put together a little clumsily. Rick is getting a little more yummy each episode, as long as he keeps his hair out of his face. I wouldn't mind a little Martinez action in Team Prison when its all done, but that ain't happening, he was pretty good with that bat, but no one tops Daryl in a man-off. So much testosterone in this episode!

Really enjoyed Hershel and Milton's time together. Heshel was cracking me up.
The Bad - Andrea, again. Her whole "hurt puppy" look when the Gov kicked her out of the conversation. Merle and Glenn's little battle annoyed me too.
The Ugly - Glenn's sex noices. He sounded like one of the walkers!

This is one of those episodes where a lot of the scenes seemed to drag on....and on.....and on, with no kind of pay-off at all.
I enjoyed the scenes with Merle and Michonne, and thought the timing was right, as they said and did what needed saying and doing, cut, and moved on to another scene.
Most of the other scenes, including the meeting, left me either waiting for "something to happen", or simply just waiting for the scene to end.

reasonable leader since he screamed at her "I thought you told me he wanted to work this out?"
right after Gov threw it back in their face.
I liked how Rick summed up what he thought of the gov....the drunk who ran down my fence in my front yard
I liked how daryl showed that he can not only shoot a mean bow but can do the knife thing awesome/ we know he can also do the bat thing in his sleep.
I liked how Herschel showed milton the humanity in his group.....but didn't give it all away.

I was okay with the sex scene, mainly because it was to show that Glenn and Maggie are working through their problems. There was one point where Glenn thought he hurt Maggie and it seemed that he was tentative and basically Maggie gave him the reassurance that it was alright. I do agree that the sex scene did go on too long and I was expecting it to go somewhere, as well.

Finally, tension without an unnecessary fight scene. The dialogue was so well done between all characters. And thank the Lord, they finally did not cut people off mid-conversation so they could get to the action faster. They let people talk. Anyone who says it was boring is just wrong. This is how you make us care about characters. This is how you set up your story. And it only took them 13 episodes to do so.
Oh, may I also say that this episode did not drag on? I've seen a few people claim that but I disagree. I was on the edge of my seat the entire time, and it has been a long time since TWD has managed to immerse me into the story like this.
I highly doubt Mazzara was very involved in the making this episode, which excites me for season 4. Look how much better episodes are when he doesn't have his grubby fingers all over them. This was the best all season, no doubt about it.
I thought it was a great episode as well.
I repeat- I DO NOT mind episodes with a lot of dialog as long as the dialog serves a purpose. And it's not repetitive and it's not about a love triangle..

Andrea right now is stuck in a tough spot. At one time she was becoming more and more powerful in Woodbury, assuming the position of town matriarch. Now the facade of a utopia that is Woodbury is being slowly chipped away. It is a promise of hope that is built on lies and corruption. Andrea had no idea about raids (ie national guard massacre) that the Governor routinely pulled. Now she does. However, to defect now would ensure total war between the two groups even though that war is inevitable.
The short conversation between Daryl and Martinez is not the beginnings of an alliance switch for Martinez. It was simply two soldiers stuck on the opposite sides of conflict who, had they met under different circumstances, would probably get along.
My one minor quibble was leaving Merle at the prison with Glenn, Maggie, and Michonne. This after Rick admitting just a couple episodes ago that he wouldn't want to leave that cast of characters alone together. It would have made more sense to take Glen and Maggie along with him leaving Daryl behind as a mediator between Merle and Michonne. I am still kind of uneasy with how little conflict has happened involving Merle's assimilation into the group.

Oh, yeah, another thing. The episode proved that Rick knew about what the Governor did to Maggie, but nobody thought to share this information with Andrea when she visited the prison a few episodes ago. Stupid.
Why should they tell Andrea? She chose Woodbury's side so far and for all they know she's still sleeping with the Governor. Why should they tell her about personal things? Bad enough she blabbed about Lori Shane and Judith.
