I think many of us have noticed at this point that the brotherly dynamic is a deadly one on this show. It can be interesting theme when used sparingly.

Rick and Shane oft described each other as brothers and started with a tightknit relationship. It was Shane's abundance of love for Rick's life that drove him mad. He turned against his own brother to almost become him -- to gain a different level of closeness. Shane was to claim Rick's wife, his son, and the unborn child that he [Shane] was convinced was his.

It was Rick's almost undying love for his brother that allowed this conflict such life. Season 2 was -- at its core -- about Rick's love for Shane, and how that prevented him from ending the past. Rick didn't have it in him destroy a relationship of his until he knew that it'd undoubtedly destroy him. Rick then went on with much regret for killing his best friend, and his animosity towards Shane's ultimate break is a driving force throughout the third season, taking Rick to extremes in dealing with Tomas.

Daryl and Merle are blood-brothers. Merle's undying love for Daryl is what finally changes him enough to take a stance against the man who essentially "saved" his physicality, and Merle sacrificed his known morality for his loved brother.

Daryl and Merle were similar to being one and the same in the beginning of the series. It isn't until T-Dog's slip up causes the group to lose Merle that Daryl finds an opportunity to earn his first true individuality. Throughout the past few seasons, we've seen Daryl flourish in the environment that Rick's group had created (with much help from Hershel)for themselves. Time-and-time again, Daryl has been presented with opportunities to revert to a Merle fashion (saving T-Dog from the traffic herd; searching for Sophia and comforting Carol; Daryl and Merle temporarily depart from the prison, but return to save Rick during a Governor attack; getting drunk with a mentally daunted Beth; holding his own against Joe and vouching for Rick, Carl and Michonne), but he stays the "better" man that he became with Merle.

After taking a thorough beating from his colleagues, Daryl is named Rick's "brother." My question is: is becoming a brother to Rick -- his official right-hand man -- a good, or a bad sign for Daryl?

Does it spell death for Daryl by Rick in a slight betrayal? Will we see a remorseless Rick sacrifice a love during a tough situation

What could Daryl's Season 5 relationship with Rick be?

Very thoughtful post. My guess is that anyone who gets close to anyone is at risk in the show though. And those who are red shirts get killed off no matter what. I did cringe a bit when Rick said that even though I loved it at the same time. Daryl walks a tight rope between what Kimbal would like to do with Daryl (that is, kill him off) and what many of the fans want (keep him going forever). A lot of the things we have seen that look like foreshadowing have gone nowhere this season. Then again, they could definitely end up coming to fruition in Season 5.

Thanks for this post! It was very well laid out, and interesting to consider.

I can't see there being a rivalry with Tyreese or Abraham, for the simple reason that Rick and Daryl had already been close long before either of them even came on the scene. It would seem contrived and like they (the writers) were pandering, IMO.

As for Daryl being at risk... well, who isn't, in this brave new world?

I really didn't see that kind of a relationship out of Rick and Glenn in the comics. They were definitely friends, but "brothers"? I don't see it. Rick had great appreciation for Glenn, but that was kind of it.

I also don't think we'll be seeing

for quite some time.

I'd rather that not be the case, though. Unless Daryl receives some significant material in S5, I think it may finally be time for him to go. His only role this season was to push Beth, nothing more. And for that, quite a bit of screentime he received (especially without Beth)!

I think it'd be best for the story to see Daryl go within the next year from a slight betrayal to a no-crap-taking Rick Grimes. I'd very much appreciate that poetism.

This is so much about why I love this forum, so many view points to look at here.  I actually see Daryl's character a bit differently now after the finale.  What I DO agree on is how wasted he was this season, shit he may as well have been farming as far as I'm concerned or singing a duet with Beth, he was a ridiculous sidelined character..until the set up of the last couple episodes and the finale.  I think the assbeating he took for his 'family', the hunting, tossing the sheet aside instead of covering Len, the smirk at the end of the episode all take us back to Daryl season 1 and he's going to give us quite a force WITH Rick and Abe.  I fear more for Tyreese, they've wasted him season after season, they need to do something fast.  His occasional hammertime moves aren't enough to carry him IMO. As for Glenn, I've always loved him but yes I see him as a little brother or friend to Rick not as much the badass or even the confidante for him.

They really have wasted Ty IMO. I am Not a Comic Book Reader, (to be known as NCBR from now on cause I am sick of typing that phrase all the time).  :) Anyway, since I am NCBR I don't know what his role is supposed to be. But what I have seen of him leads me to believe that he could be a whole lot more interesting character. The entire "Karen, my love" didn't work for me at all. Ok, he was angry when she died but his description of the dream in the Grove left me rolling out of my chair with laughter. I am sorry, it was just too much! Yes, it set up the whole Carol confession but it was just too maudlin.

I like that he is a hot head. I like that he smashes his way through things that piss him off. I know a person like that. They are a teddy bear until they get upset. But there needs to be more to him than that unless he is just going to end up being a red shirt. I honestly could see him dying to protect Sasha or something and have that be the start of her development. Who knows? Right now, he is under utilized. And I wish he'd lose that stupid hat. I can't imagine how sweaty and gross that has to be by now. He looks much better without it anyway.

Evidently, one of these "Daryl is going to die" threads will turn out to be true.

To op you did a good job in your post. I thought it was a bit of a cringe worthy moment as well when Rick said that to Daryl but I would've thought that no matter who he would've said it to because of the things that happened in the past and the way the show loves to kill off its main characters. In fact the writers have set up most of the main cast to the point where if they wanted to kill them off at beginning of S5 they could because their storylines have all reached conclusions. As I am tired of watching everyone die in the series I would like to think that this was a good thing for Rick to tell Daryl but in the end it's just another moment to think about when one or the other character is killed.

As for Ty, I don't think that his character is anywhere near who he is in the GN but either way I don' think Ty will be a problem for either Rick or Daryl. As for Abe we are just getting to know him and I think that whenever the group hits the road Rick will probably have issue with Abe either way so I think Daryl's brotherly relationship will hold for awhile or as nearly as long as Daryl lives.

Shane was obsessed with the idea that he was the only one who could keep Lori and Carl alive and he was in love with Lori and had that father/son bond with Carl. When Rick came back, Shane saw all of that taken away. He was convinced that Rick was dead and he had rights to Lori and Carl. Something he never had before and he was liking it a lot and wasn't going to let that be taken away from him. Rick's decision making kept frustrating Shane to the point where he felt that it would get them all killed and thus Rick needed to be taken out of the picture.
Yes, we all hashed it out before here and I'm just re-stating the differences between Shane and Daryl.

Daryl and Rick's relationship is one built on survival and mutual defense. Daryl told Merle that "Rick has done alright by him." Rick treated Daryl as an equal and as a necessary part of the group. The others in the group, even Dale, had reinforced that feeling in Daryl. "You're a decent man!" Dale said when trying to sway him to spare Randal the death sentence. Daryl had to have chewed on this after Dale left him alone again. Recall Daryl's final words to Dale before putting him down, "Sorry brother." Other things that have happened may have swayed Daryl's loyalty to Rick... this for example...

He saw that Rick was willing to trade a life for a life. Rick honors his (life) debts.

Now losing his real brother, burning down the shack with Beth, standing up to Joe and then finding the rest, err most, of the prison group again, could only reinforce that he now has the family that he deserves to be with.

The relationship between Rick and Daryl, will only get stronger I think. I don't think it's a death sentence. But you never know.

I agree that Tyreese's hat has to be able to stand up on it's own at this point. However, I doubt they will completely get rid of it. It is a part of his character's attire from the comics, just like Carl's hat and Dale's hat were for them.

Don't forget Rosita's cap! ;) Or Glenn's that he apparently no longer wears.

I think hats are a theme of characters who should be great.

Tyreese will NOT take that hat off at this point because if he did, the hat would run away forever.
